בס ד IN THIS ISSUE: CHOPPED AND THEN SOME! LEAGUE UPDATES PARSHA QUESTIONS PICTURES: WEEK 6 MASMIDEI AREIVIM SHNAYIM MIKRAH Rabbi Yanky Hersh Director Rabbi Yossi Bennett Assistant Director Senior Division HC Rabbi Tsvi Greenfield M.I.T. Division Head Rabbi Tzvi Finkel Learning Director Rabbi Yehoshua Robinson EXTREME Night Activity Coordinator Well, another amazing week at Camp Areivim comes to a close. It s pretty incredible things are heating up and reaching a boiling point! Here are the details! The week began on a somber note as Monday was Erev Tisha b Av. To commemorate the day, the entire Senior Division was zocheh to hear divrei hisor orus from the Camp s Rav, Rav Nosson Greenberg, shlit a, who enthralled campers with his animated stories, while at the same time sending home a very important message about Tisha b Av and the days leading up to it. As has become tradition, all campers lined up to give shalom to the Rav and he wished them, a fleishigeh Tisha b Av. Although we were not zocheh to a fleishigeh Tisha b Av this year, BE H, next year we will be celebrating with all of Klal Yisroel in Yerushalayim Ir HaKodesh. On Wednesday, after Chatzos, campers accompanied by their counselors and Head Staff made the short bus ride over to Five Towns Paintball, Batting Cages & Mini Golf. What a great time everyone had! The batting cages were rocking, the paintball was k nocking and the mini golf was shocking! Why? Because MANY campers hit a hole -in-one on the 18th hole...which won them a free game of mini golf! Among the campers were Aaron Lapidus, Daniel From, Shia Wallach, Eli Scharf, Dovid Barkany, and a number of other campers. Simply amazing! Plus, Rabbi Bennett took on Rabbi Greenfield in Bubble Hockey and beat him...twice! This is noteworthy because Rabbi Bennett NEVER beats Rabbi Greenfield! It was a lucky day for every one! In addition to the trip, campers also enjoyed an intense game of Leagues and a refreshing dip in the pool. What a day! Thursday was the anticipated Chopped Areivim! Rabbi Bennett loaded up the pantry with an assortment and wide array of delicious and scrumptious ingredients with which contestants would create their delectable edibles. Each round consisted of 2 teams of 3 a counselor, an MIT and a younger

Thursday night was another incredible installment of Areivim MIT Extreme! The MIT Division met up with Rabbi Robinson at Woodmere Lanes and had exclucamper. Secret ingredients included eggs, Portobello mushrooms, popcorn and super snacks! Cooking time varied depending on the secret ingredients, but time seemed to fly by! Our judges included Rabbi Greenfield, Rabbi Bennett who also served as host for the activity and Yedidya Lazar, our very own kitchen manager! Dishes ranged from salads and sandwiches to sunny side ups and omelets. Taking the cake although there was no cake was Yehuda Malek and his team s delicious onion and cheese omelet! Mmm I could really go for another one of them right about now! A big congratulations to all the winners! The week finished with a number of exciting accomplishments. Firstly, many boys have already started bringing in their Learnathon money to benefit Chai Lifeline. What an important organization and what a z chus we have to partner with them in their tremendous work! Over the course of the week, many boys won Rabbi Greenfield s best davener awards for davening shacharis with kavanah and with a bren! Insane amounts of tickets and ice cold sodas are given out each morning in recognition of campers who daven nicely. Yasher ko chachem to all the winners this week! Masmidei Areivim and our Shnayim Mikrah Program are still going strong! It is such a chizuk to see the campers who completed their quota of shnayim mikrah. If you re not part of the Program yet, this week is the week to start! continued from page 1 sivity to the entire bowling alley. Rabbi Robinson ordered in Pizza, Zeppolis & Unlimited Soda for dinner at the alley. With an hour and a half of unlimited bowling and amazing talent being demonstrated by a number of MITs, everyone had a blast! Friday included delicious cholent and kugel and another exciting League game. Be sure to read Rabbi Greenfield s League Updates below! Have an amazing Shabbos! - Rabbi Bennett Sneak Peek into Next Week CALENDAR CHANGE: Monday NO TRIP Tuesday Wheels of Fun!!! Rabbi Tsvi Greenfield See Ya!! Another week of Areivim Leagues gone by. Here are your highlights 4 th & 5 th Grade Conference: In an epic basketball game between Puma and Reebok, Shua Lasky kept him team going draining shot after shot from waaaaaay downtown! Daniel Gewirtz of the Nike scored the game winning touchdown with a pick-six to secure the victory against the Crocs. Air Jordan s Pinny Hirschfeld, scored 10 goals and was also mochel on one goal because a player on the other team got hurt on the play. Shmuli Gorlin gave a friend his stick which was better and kept the worse one for himself. Gevaldik!! Down by a bunch, Aharon Yosef Obadia, helped spark comeback by scoring 6 consecutive points. Shimmy Rotberg on the New Balance had an amazing double hat-trick to lead his team to victory in a tenacious hockey game against the Crocs. At the end of a nail-biting softball game, even though he didn t win, Dovid Meir Clenman told his teammate don t worry about and gave him an encouraging pat on the back. What amazing midos! 6 th 7 th & 8 th Grade Conference: In a Football game between the Godzilla s and the Dragon s, Hudi Teigman led the defensive ambush, recording 2 INTs in the first 2 drives, including a pick-six. In an important game of Volleyball,Yitzchak Ganz gave up his position a lot of times to let others ply the middle and front line. Such beautiful middos!! Have an amazing Shabbos Nachamu!!

Rabbi Tzvi Finkel Have you ever tried getting an appointment to speak with the President of the United States? Unless you are an extremely important person it is not worth trying. It is unusual for a person of such high stature to use his valuable time conversing with ordinary people like you and me. One of our fundamental beliefs is that Hashem speaks with prophets. The Gemarah in Nedarim 38a lists the qualifications necessary to become a prophet. He must not have any physical handicap; he must be smart, wealthy, and modest. He must be in complete control of his desires, never succumbing to his temptations. Only one with these attributes is deemed worthy of having direct communication with Hashem. In this week s Parshah we read about the Aseres Hadibros. The first and second commandments were heard by all the Jewish people directly from Hashem, without an intermediary. How can it be that all 600,000 Jews who stood by the mountain attained the high level necessary to receive prophecy? Surely, there must have been at least some who were not on the level of true prophets. Describing the camping of the Jews alongside the mountain the possuk states he camped opposite the mountain. Rashi explains that the singular he is used, although the verse speaks about the entire Jewish nation, because the entire Jewish nation camped together with unity. There were no conflicts or altercations, just absolute harmony; the Nation was one. As an individual a person may be lacking in a particular area that makes him unworthy of receiving a prophecy. But, when one is part of a group and the group is united, the entire group is viewed as a single unit. Collectively, the group has all the required traits. What one person is lacking the other fills in making the group as a whole worthy of having Hashem speak to them. Although there may have been some people not worthy of receiving prophecy, their unity allowed them to hear the first two of the Aseres Hadibros. When we are united we can accomplish so much more then we can as individuals! Parshas Va eschanan "And I prayed to Hashem at that time." Why "at that time"? 3:23 - Defeating Sichon and Og, whose lands were part of Eretz Canaan, Moshe thought perhaps Hashem had annulled the vow against his entering the Land. What characteristic trait is represented by Hashem's "strong hand"? 3:24 - His willingness to forgive. What is ha'levanon? 3:25 - Ha'levanon means the Beis Hamikdash, which makes "white" (lavan), i.e., atones for, the Jewish People. What did Hashem tell Yehoshua after the battle of Ai? 3:28 - Yehoshua must lead the army into battle. What will happen if the Jewish People fail to keep the mitzvos properly? 4:9 - The non-jewish world will regard them as foolish. How did the decree that Moshe not enter the Land affect him even in death? 4:22 - Even his remains weren't buried in the Land. What is hinted by the word v'noshantem? 4:25 - The gematria of v'noshantem, 852, hints at the number of years until the first exile. Why were the Jewish People exiled two years earlier than indicated by Moshe's prophecy? 4:25 - So that the rest of the prophecy "that you shall utterly perish" would not be fulfilled. "You'll serve man-made gods." Is this literal? 4:28 - No. It means you'll serve others who serve idols. Why is east called mizrach? 4:41 - It's the direction from which the sun shines (mizrach means shining). "Keep the Shabbat day as I have commanded you." When had Hashem previously commanded us to keep Shabbat? 5:13 - Before Matan Torah, at Marah. (Shmos 15:25) Where did the Jewish People first receive the command to honor parents? 5:16 - At Marah. (Shmos 15:25). What is meant by "Hashem, our G-d, Hashem is One"? 6:4 - Hashem, who is now our G-d, but not [accepted as] G-d of the other nations, will eventually be [accepted as] the one and only G-d. What are two meanings of loving Hashem "with all your might"? 6:5-1) With everything you own. 2) Whether Hashem treats you with kindness or harshness. How well-versed must one be in Torah? 6:7 - If asked a Torah question, one should be able to reply quickly and clearly. Where does the word totafos come from? 6:8 - Tot means two in Caspi. Fos means two in Afriki. Together they allude to the four sections of tefillin. Who is fit to swear in Hashem's name? 6:13 - One who serves Hashem and reveres His name. What does it mean that the Jews are the "smallest nation"? 7:7 - B'nei Yisrael are the humblest nation. When someone serves Hashem with love, how many generations receive reward? 7:9-2,000. Why are evil-doers rewarded in this world? 7:10 - So that they get no reward in the next world.
