Sunday, December 5, 2010 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES W. Patrick Alston, Sr., Lectionary Team Liturgist Worship Planning Notes This Sunday we continue the season of Advent. It is not yet time for Christmas carols. Instead, this is our season of anticipation and preparation of the Savior s birth. It is the responsibility of the Worship and Arts Ministry to create the right worship atmosphere. Be sure to teach members of your congregation about the Advent Season. Do not rush past it to get to Christmas. Special thanks to Sharon L. Fuller, who was our Guest Lectionary Liturgist for the First Sunday of Advent, for providing great worship recommendations. I have repeated some of them below. (a) Crafts and Tapestry Banners should be made to provide visual display of the symbols and colors Advent. See The African American Lectionary Liturgical Colors Corner for assistance. Discuss Advent in Sunday School classes and during other periods of Christian 1

education. (b) Create a newsletter: Place in it information on the season of Advent. (c) Get the Word Out Use Social Networking Sites Prepare an ecommercial to promote the observance of Advent offered by your ministry. Post it on various networking sites such as YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, etc. to use for evangelism purposes. 1. Litany Leader: Congregation: Leader: Congregation: Leader: ALL: *During this Advent season the whole Church, the body of Christ, looks forward to the second coming of the promised Messiah, Jesus our Lord. *God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth to announce to the virgin Mary that she found favor with God. Her cousin Elizabeth said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb (Luke 1:42). We long for and anticipate your coming, and on this Sunday we pledge to do our part to prepare for the coming of the Lord. The promise that you will come to lead the way out of suffering comes with a divine call for us to participate in the process of deliverance. Before all lists we make this season, first will be those things that make us agents of deliverance, not agents of strife or agents of pain or confusion. We will not put first those things that make our hearts merry but instead will first seek to be your angels pointing the way to you. Just as the North Star pointed our ancestors toward freedom, we will pursue the light that only you provide which leads us out of every darkness: the darkness of materialism, the darkness of war, and the darkness of apathy. We herald your coming, Wonderful Counselor, for you are our direction when the world spins out of control. You are our peace when the enemy attempts to disturb our very souls. You are the keeper of our souls and the guider of our destiny. We love you, we adore you, and we will forever follow you. You alone are worthy of our praise! 2.
