A Newsletter of St. Francis Episcopal Church, Goldsboro, NC February 2017 Our Life of Transitions: This Transitory Life Perhaps you recall reading in our November newsletter Reality Check: Time limits. This relates to our ongoing exploring CLUE of our life together: our Calling from God, Living in community, Understanding who God wants us to be & Evolving as we grow in God s love. This transitory life can seem scary. Change can be scary. Life transitions can be scary. [Ask me about it! You recall, John & I made a big transition moving here!] Know this: Change is part of life. Science tells us we change daily: Our cells constantly change. Change is natural. As we acknowledge our transitory life, let us remember our Baptismal Covenant in which we promise, saying: I will with God s help. One of the many authors in Women s Uncommon Prayers: Our Lives Revealed, Nurtured, Celebrated, emphasizes With God s help, I shall not fear change shall accept change will happen every day shall embrace it all with God s help. [Pp. 53-54. Eds: Elizabeth Rankin Geits. Marjorie A. Burke. Ann Smith. Morehouse Publishing.2000.] The word transitory embraces transitions, life s constant changing. The author, Ethel Crawford, notes we are not alone in this experience & says some changes cause pain, others joy, some we barely notice, some we cause & sometimes we as individuals are God s instrument of change. [p. 53] She says: God shares the changes with us & rejoices & comforts us. God is the constant in [our] quicksilver existence. [p. 54] We can center down in God s peace, as my spiritual director has taught me. How? How do we welcome change & grow through it? Remember: We are in this together. We declare this fact each time we express our faith in the Nicene Creed: We believe in one God We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ For us & for our salvation We believe in the Holy Spirit, the giver of life We believe We acknowledge We look for and the life of the world to come. Amen. [Amen aka So be it.] Together we bless & break bread. If no one shows up for Communion, I cannot bless the bread & wine. We have to have at least 2 or 3 of us to share our holy meal. In February we will have opportunities to share the life of change in other ways. We will look at 2 women who speak a lot in the Bible & 2 who say the least, using Bible Women: All Their Words and Why They Matter by Lindsay Hardin Freeman. This 4-session exploration about life changes will be Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. We have 2 positive opportunities to take the presence of St. Francis beyond 503 Forest Hill Drive: 1) We have been invited to participate Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. in Holy Eucharist celebrating The Feast of Absalom Jones, at St. Joseph s Episcopal Church, 509 Ramsey St., Fayetteville. Bishop Rob Skirving will be the guest speaker & celebrant. We are asked to bring our banner to process. Clergy & banner bearers are asked to arrive no later than 3:30 p.m. Let me know if you want to attend so we can carpool. 2) Representatives from several Goldsboro churches met Jan. 3 at St. Stephen s to organize the Carver Heights Weekend Project to provide food for needy children on weekends. The need became apparent after school reorganization: some children in the same family no longer receive food for the weekend since they are assigned to a different school than where this project has functioned. Much preliminary research & work has been completed by the larger churches. St. Francis has been teamed with 1 st Presbyterian for the 1 st week of June [working in May to collect & bag specified non-perishable foods & deliver to the school]. We need volunteers to help coordinate our participation & our purchasing or collecting food. More details later. We will do this With God s Help. And this is my prayer: That our love may overflow more & more with knowledge and full insight to help us determine what is best together. Paraphrase Philippians 1: 9-10 The Rev. Marcía O. McRae

6 ~ The Franciscans February 2017 ~ St. Francis LEGACY FUND During our 50 th Anniversary year, the vestry established the St. Francis Legacy Fund as an endowment to provide future generations with the resources to share the good news and respond to the needs of their time as well as to extend our personal legacies into the future. Gifts have been invested by The Episcopal Church Foundation through State Street Bank and a percentage of the income and appreciation is to be used for outreach ministries, scholarships, Christian formation, and youth events as well as seed money for start-up ministries. Our first small grant from the fund will be given this year by the vestry. As the fund grows through future gifts and appreciation, more ministry will be done with these gifts. At this tax season consider asking your advisor about how you might support the Legacy Fund through a present gift or in a bequest. We suggest you look at Your Last Best Gift at www.stfrancisgoldsboro.org (under "RESOURCES" tab). This notebook is designed for your use in keeping your important information current and accessible and for your survivors' use in carrying out your last wishes. Versions are available to print out or for use on your computer. Look for monthly updates here in The Franciscans.
