Tim Carpenter Francis Vivacqua, Ronnie Quinn, Esther Carpenter John & Michael Carpenter Wells House/Pineview Commons: Anthony Caruso & John Sagan Question: The Catechism of the Catholic Church says in paragraph 460: The Word became flesh to make us partakers of the divine nature : For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God. For the Son of God became man so that we might become God. Does the Catholic Church really teach that we can become God? Answer: The phrase that we might become God is meant in a qualified sense, not in an absolute sense. The Catechism is quoting St. Athanasius. But you will note that prior to quoting St. Athanasius, the Catechism sets the context by referencing 2 Peter 1:3-4 which says, [God s] divine power has bestowed on us all things that pertain to life and godliness...so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature (RSV). Hence, the Catechism, in setting the same context from which St. Athanasius reflects, is not teaching that we become our own god but that we participate in, and become sharers in the divine nature of God. We do this by grace, and because we are made members of the Body of Christ through baptism. Saints and preachers often use hyperbole and other techniques for memorable impact. However, it is important to understand the mode of speech that is being used. Frequently, we do not use words in an absolute sense, but rather in a qualified or sometimes metaphorical sense. We do so for impact. If I were to praise you and say, You re the man! Despite my use of the definite article the, I do not mean to state that there are no other men in existence or that your are the only one among all other existing males worthy of praise. Rather, it is a kind of flourish or exaggeration meant to single you out for something in the moment. I speak in an absolute sense, but I do not mean it absolutely. And so, too, for the memorable saying of St. Athanasius: We share in the divine nature as Scripture says, but we do not become separate little gods unto ourselves. Bishop s Appeal Commitment Weekend at HOLY TRINITY ONLY will be April 25th. and 26th. This year s assessment is $64,882.00 Sincere thanks to all who participated in any way in providing the music for the Easter liturgies. The gifts of your time and talent in the weeks of rehearsal at both Holy Trinity and Holy Spirit sing clearly of your selfless cooperative spirits and of your faith.
