Edward and Lucy teaches, proclaims and lives the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We do so through the celebration of the Eucharist, the administration of the sacraments and in loving and merciful service to all.

We have another of our diocesan and national collections this weekend. This collection began almost fifty years ago; The Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Proceeds from this collection fund projects locally and across the country as a hand up, not a handout. Over the years CCHD has been an effective means to reach out to the fringes...we have a new American flag flying at St. Lucy donated in memory of Eugene Breedlove by Judy. Our old flag had reached the end of its useful life.. If you have a flag to donate please let me know...we had an unprecedented number of people nominated for the Parish Pastoral Council elections. Now they must be contacted to determine if they are willing to serve. The ballots will be prepared for the election on the weekend of December 1 & 2. The PPC as you read on the nominating form, exists to promote the spiritual growth of the parish community and to plan ways for us to carry out the mission of the Church. We meet most months, begin with period of prayer and are then led through an agenda having to do with planning a dynamic and faith-filled parish life. Our recent parish survey will give the PPC plenty to consider. Our prayer asks God to keep us from fear or favor in our deliberations, but to seek his will and our You are Invited to our Thursday, November 22, 3pm in St. Lucy Winca Hall RSVP: Chef Judy 440-413-0557 needs...generations of Faith met last week. We are grateful to Deena Avalon for leading us through the opening of the session with a quiz game. Part of GOF for December, on Dec. 9 will include a Parish Advent Penance Service at 12:30PM.Our youth are also invited to be part of the Children s Pageant at the special Children s Mass at St. Edward at 4:00pm on Christmas Eve, December 24. Several practices will be announced later...thanks to all who helped pack and deliver Thanksgiving Food Baskets Saturday. This is always an important parish effort, reaching out to the area. Working with Catholic Charities and united Way, we usually help 70 80 households...our next effort will be for Christmas. We begin to collect donations of food just as we did for Thanksgiving. In addition to this we have the Giving Tree. The trees at St. Lucy and St. Edward will hold small angels with gift suggestions and ideas from the children we will be helping at Christmas. As you can guess, logistics are important filling out the angel ornaments and getting the food baskets and Christmas gifts delivered on December 15...A group of our Confirmation class will attend a Catholic Youth Day at John Carroll University December 15. They will spend the day with Catholic youth from all across the area. Remember them in your prayers. They are the future parish... Please be sure to take an Angel tag off the tree. Purchase the requested item(s) suggested on the tag. Wrap the gift, securely tape the tag onto the wrapped gift and return and place under the tree. The gift deadline is Sunday, December 9....my words will not pass away Every week at the end of the Creed we say Jesus will come to judge the living and the dead. The Second Coming of Jesus is described in the Gospel today in dramatic language. It will be at the end of the world as we know it at a time far off in the future. So we say, not to worry. Then Jesus brings us up short. He tells us not to try to try to figure out when the world will end. Live in this world right now, he ways, the way I told you to. This is the time to bear fruit. After all, the end times happen to us all as a generation that will pass into the mist of disappearing ages. The years go by so quickly! Another one is almost over. Seize the day! We live in the shadow of eternity. We are like workers who do not know when the master will come. We must live in such a way that it does not matter when he comes. Day by day, our work must be completed. We are called to live every day in a way which will be pleasing to him. We must be ready, at any moment, to meet him face-to-face. Or whole life is meant to be a preparation to meet the King. Each week God speaks to us in the three readings. Why? His desires to impart to us the wisdom we need to thrive in the life we are living. He tries to help us avoid a sterile and meaningless life and to search for a life that matters. (James DiGiacomo, SJ)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one s birthday to life, the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. It s A Matter of Life... The debate over abortion continues. The words of the debate are purposely deceptive. Pro- choice is no choice. Prochoice brings death to the baby, the family, and to the future of our nation by killing our national conscience. Abortion is demanded as a right, but no one has a right to kill another. LET US GIVE THANKS (Thanksgiving Prayer) Our Father in Heaven, we give thanks for the pleasure of gathering on this occasion. We give thanks for this food prepared by loving hands. We give thanks for life, the freedom to enjoy it all and all other blessings. As we partake of this food we pray for health and strength to carry on and try to live as you would have us live. This we ask through Christ our Lord. AMEN ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. Copyright J. S.
