A Letter from Father. Page 2 October 5, 2014 MAY YOU ENJOY THE BLESSINGS OF THE HOLY ROSARY AND WORLD MISSION SUNDAY! May God bless you abundantly for your support and gracious solidarity with St. Francis Parish and the Missions. Your generous gift is greatly appreciated. On October 19, 2014, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis has stressed that everyone is to be a bearer of the Good news of Christ. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations is truly a call from God to proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Then we will experience the delightful and comforting joy of evangelizing. In our special devotions to the Blessed Mother, let us pray that she will continue to help us in our quest to provide for the less fortunate in the world. Our call to love the Rosary and the Missions during the month of October is very providential and inspirational. The Missions would not be able to provide for the needy without the witness and power of prayer that we continually recite in the Rosary. As I listened to the following Chorus of the song written by Mac Davis, It s Hard to Be Humble, it also brought to mind the lack of humility displayed in the following story: Oh, Lord, it s hard to be humble, When you re perfect in every way, I can t wait to look in the mirror, cause I get better looking each day. To know me is to love me, I must be a hell of a man, Oh, Lord, it s hard to be humble, But I m doin the best that I can. A while back, there was a Mrs. Church in our Lady of Mercy Parish and she seemed to do everything and be everywhere. At one time or another and often simultaneously, she was head of the Altar Society, a Eucharistic Minister, Lunch Mother, Playground Guard, President of the Parish Council, Minister of Care, Representative to the Diocesan Council and close friend and confidant to the pastor. Mrs. Church s neighbor was a divorced mother of three who worked full-time and always declined Mrs. Church s invitations to participate in parish activities. She said she just didn t have the time. After noticing that her neighbor appeared to be dating, Mrs. Church mentioned, in confidence, to the Pastor that she wondered if it was permissible for her neighbor to participate in the Eucharist and to show a good example to young people. Later, the pastor announced that in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Parish, the Parish Council had established an annual Our Lady of Mercy award to be given to a person who demonstrated qualities of the parish patroness. Everyone, including Mrs. Church herself, expected her to be the first recipient. A special review committee was established to consider those who were nominated for the award. Imagine Mrs. Church s surprise when her neighbor was chosen for the honor for her work in establishing a community program for battered women and children. Getting this program off the ground had been the reason she had not had time for Mrs. Church s programs. May God bless you every day in your humility as you face the storms that come your way. As we recite our daily Rosary, let us please pray for the success of WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2014. These donations will be an answer to our prayers and will enhance the lives of the poor and suffering. Gratefully in the Lord,

Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 6 October 5, 2014 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The sacrament of penance has a long and difficult history. The Church sometimes struggles with how best to be faithful to the image of an all-forgiving God. Once a very public rite with publicly visible participation on the part of the penitent, it became in time a very private matter. By the fourteenth century, when a prayer of absolution and a laying on of hands was still required in sacramental confession, theologians were saying that even that was too much liturgy. All that was required was confession itself and the sacramental words Ego te absolvo, or I absolve you. In 1614 the Council of Florence tried to flesh out this bare skeleton, requiring that if possible the priest should wear a stole, that the confession should be in church and that there be questions about the person s state in life, occupation and last confession. This is the first time the Church recommended that the penitent and priest be separated by a grill, thereby eliminating the ritual laying on of hands once so central to the sacrament, substituting the priest s raised right hand in blessing. This is the rite that remained in force until the sacrament became the subject of very stormy debates at the Second Vatican Council, leading to a major reform in 1974 that is still only partially received. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. IN THE VINEYARD As usual, today s first and third scripture readings are obviously related, with the second continuing one of Paul s Letters - these days, the Letter to the Philippians. The vineyard stories from Isaiah and Matthew both talk about evildoers coming to a bad end. In Isaiah, it s the vineyard itself that produces wild grapes instead of the crop the owner dreamed of and worked for. So it will be trampled and overgrown with thorns. In Matthew, those to whom the owner leased the vineyard destroy the dream. So the owner will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants (Matthew 21:41). Yes, if we reject divine love, we come to a bad end. And with all this talk of the unfaithful being trampled and thrown out, it s consoling to hear Paul s message to the Philippians, who were by no means perfect. Have no anxiety at all, Paul said. Then the God of peace will be with you (Philippians 4:6, 9). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. ~Philippians 4:6 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gal 1:6-12; Ps 111:1b-2, 7-9, 10c; Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Gal 1:13-24; Ps 139:1b-3, 13-15; Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Gal 2:1-2, 7-14; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Gal 3:1-5; Lk 1:69-75; Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Gal 3:7-14; Ps 111:1b-6; Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Gal 3:22-29; Ps 105:2-7; Lk 11:27-28 Sunday: Is 25:6-10a; Ps 23:1-6; Phil 4:12-14, 19-20; Mt 22:1-14 [1-10] Weekend of September 28-29 2014 $5,931.72 Active Registered Families 983 Families receiving envelopes 616 % of families using envelopes 22% Envelopes received 09/28/14 135 Please remember to use your offering envelopes.
