He spent most of his career as Organist and Choirmaster at Saint James Episcopal Church in Chicago. While he was there, Saint James was named the Cathedral church of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago. His style is a combination of late romantic and jazz harmonies. A humorous anecdote about him exists where in, after being asked how to play a piece of his, he loudly declared: I don t play pieces, I just write them! Charles Hubert Hastings Parry (1848-1918) was an English composer primarily of sacred music for use in the Church of England. He has some well-known pieces including the tune Jerusalem, often paired with William Blake s poem and did those feet in ancient times and used as a patriotic song in the United Kingdom. This music appears, with different text, in the United Methodist hymnal #729. The final piece of the third volume of the Clavier-Übung (keyboard practice), the first subject of this fugue resembles the tune St. Anne, which was used for our opening hymn today. As such this fugue, and its accompanying prelude are often referred to as the St. Anne Prelude and Fugue. However, Bach and Isaac Watts (the composer of the tune St. Anne) never knew each other.
