T HE ILLUMINATION N EWS FROM ST. DAVID S EPISCOPAL CHURCH St. David s Episcopal Church 1015 Old Roswell Rd. Roswell, GA 30076 770-993-6084 www.stdavidchurch.org New Wednesday Night Series Contemplative Prayer for Ordinary Christians Praying It doesn t have to be the blue iris, it could be weeds in a vacant lot, or a few small stones; just pay attention, then patch a few words together and don t try to make them elaborate, this isn t a contest but the doorway into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak. This poem by Mary Oliver speaks about prayer as a doorway, and so, it is. Prayer is a doorway into Christ. This winter, on Wednesday evenings, my friend and colleague, the Rev. Kathy Holman, will lead a class on what the Church calls Centering Prayer. Centering Prayer is a movement into the first language of God: silence. This is the place that is utterly safe, utterly gentle, utterly kind. Sometimes people suggest that they aren t ready, or spiritual enough or knowledgeable enough to experience Centering Prayer. Not so. Please hear that you re being invited into the spaces of this language, one of deep, restful peace. Please join us. Rev. AES+ Jan. 28 March 25, 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall (except for Ash Wednesday) This 8 week course will be limited to a small class size requiring a fee of $40 and fidelity to weekly attendance. Please note: You must register in advance. Drop-ins will not be accepted due to the intensive nature of this experience. Please make checks payable to St. David s and register by calling Rev. Anne Elizabeth Swiedler at 770-993-1094, ext. 124. Dinner served between 5:45 and 6:30 p.m. The menu for each week will be posted on the website every Monday. Program: 6:30 7:30 p.m. All reservations can be made online at www.stdavidchurch.org. Dinner reservations are required by the Monday of each program week by calling 770-993-1094, ext. 130. We re all ready, we re all spiritual enough, and this is not about head knowledge, in the least. Childcare reservations are required by the Monday of the program week by calling 770-993-1094, ext. 130. Please tell us the names of the children and their ages. PARISH LIFE Classified: Homestretch has immediate need for any good working vacuum cleaners that are needed for the new family that St. David's supports. Call Patty Conard at 770-641-6568. Italian Pilgrimage May 2009 Dr. Stan Beecham of St. David s will be leading a pilgrimage this spring to Italy. The Pilgrimage will begin and end in Rome, where we will spend three days touring the city. We will walk from Rieti to Assisi, covering 100 miles over seven days. The group will trace the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi (Cammino di San Francesco) as we tour the many villages St. Francis visited during his ministry in the early 1200 s. Once in Assisi, we will spend three days there, visiting the many historic sites in the area. The group will fly directly from Atlanta to Rome, leaving on May 2 nd and returning May 15 th. The cost of the trip is estimated at $3800; includes all travel and lodging. The group is limited to 12. For more information call Dr. Beecham at 770-262-5556 or email: Stan@LeadershipResourceCenter.com. St. David s is participating in an Eucumenical build for Habitat of Humanity of N. Fulton County with approximately 9 other area churches. We are partnering with St. Aidan s on Saturday, January 24 and February 28, 2009, 8 a.m. 4 p.m. Anyone interested in participating should call Robert Ward at 404-414-4935 or email him at r_ward@bellsouth.net, or sign up in the mailbox hallway. The Bell Choir is seeking one permanent member and several subs for this season. We will train you, but knowledge of music is needed. The bell choir is open to anyone from eighth grade through adults. Rehearsals are Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m., September through May. The bell choir will play eight services this year. Call Eileen Nahser at 770-475-9684 to sign up. Club Titus for Seniors The February program on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 12 noon, in the Parish Hall will be with Fr. Paul as he takes the group on a special tour of the new Jeffords Fellowship Hall. RSVP for lunch is required. Please call 770-993-1094, ext. 125. Employment Ministry Prayer Support Meets the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Sinclair House... On the third Monday of every month one of the clerics will be present to lead parishioners and friends, who are seeking work, in prayer. In this time together we pray deeply for our gifts to be used to the glory of God in meaningful, beneficial employment; we pray in thanksgiving for all the gifts God gives us; and we pray for others whose needs are greater than our own. We gather at The Sinclair House at 7:00 p.m. for roughly 30 minutes of focused prayer. All are welcome. www.stdavidchurch.org 3

FROM THE NURSERY Greetings from the Nursery! We have many folks to be thankful for by continuing to give their time and love to the nursery at St. David s. The following parishioners gave up some of their family time on Christmas Eve to serve in the nursery at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Many thanks to adult caregivers Colleen Bast, Kara Bast, Orlon Daniels, Debbie Erdmanczyk, Betty Mizell, Amy Smucker-Spann and Kelly Thompson, along with youth caregivers Janae Lunsford, Megan Rolquin, Irina Rundlett and Lauren Tracy. The nursery during Wonder-FULL Wednesdays is a happening place! Our youngest parishioners have such a good time due to caregivers Orlon Daniels, Carrie Pomian, Amy Smucker-Spann, Tasia Brown and Julia Burger. Our young children are blessed to have such a loving group of folks caring for them! Things to note in the Nursery: Check your pockets and purses, please! The nursery is down to 5 pagers. It can be hard to remember every detail during the excitement of picking up your child from the nursery on Sunday mornings, but if you can remember to check your pockets and purses for pagers, that would be helpful. If you could also check at home and/or in your cars to see if you have a pager from St. David s, we would be grateful. Stop by the nursery and take a peek! Rachel Davis, the granddaughter of Kaye and Toby Davis, is in the process of painting the Toddler Room! She is working on a Noah s Ark theme, and it looks amazing! l to r: Kaye Davis and Rachel. The Adult Inquirer s Class has started... Do you want to learn more about the Episcopal Church? On behalf of the parish priests, you are invited to participate in a wonderful educational opportunity we re offering the Adult Inquirer s Class. Taught by the clerics, this Sunday school class will be devoted to preparing adults for confirmation or reception into the Episcopal Church. In this class, you will learn: the history of the Episcopal Church, about our worship, with emphasis on The Book of Common Prayer, about the Anglican approach to Holy Scripture, and the structure and workings of the Episcopal Church. There will be plenty of time for questions, answers, and good discussion. The Inquirer s Class will be offered at St. David s on Sunday mornings at 10:15, from January 18 through May 3, in the Parish Hall. This class will be held on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of each month. The 4th Sunday of each month will be the Rector s Forum. We will also offer a parallel class on our Wonder-full Wednesday evenings at 6:30, January 21 through April 29, in the Mercy Classroom (downstairs, Jeffords Fellowship Hall). The Bishop will be at St. David s to confirm or receive all those who have completed the course requirements at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. We look forward to a continued relationship shared in the love of our risen Lord Jesus Christ! www.stdavidchurch.org 7
