Messenger Riverview United Methodist Church 2253John Anderson Drive Ormond Beach, FL 32176 386-441-1622 Email:rumc2003@bellsouth.net www.riverviewunitedmethodist.com Happy New Year! I praise our God for giving us this New Year. None of us know exactly what 2018 holds for us. But we do know that our good Lord is with us. That's why I chose to put New Year, Same God on our church sign. I invite you to trust that the God who has led us this far (God of Ebenezer, 1 Samuel 7:12) will continue to guide us faithfully. Here are some of my wishes or suggestions for our church family. 1. Follow Jesus daily instead of coming to a church only on Sunday or special times of the year like Easter and Christmas. Although I appreciate your presence and am happy to see you, I pray that you can follow Jesus daily instead of weekly, monthly or yearly. One of the good ways is to do a daily devotion. If you are not able to come to our church regularly, you can still do this wherever you are. If you can come, I encourage you to worship with us every Sunday. I appreciate all the efforts of our membership care team to connect our members together. 2. I want us to work together. We will be a better and stronger church when we work together. Paul describes the church as one body with many parts in 1 Corinthians 12. King Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 4:9, Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work. Our District is planning to have a district training meeting in March. This meeting will be led by Vitality Share Groups in our district. The theme will be STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS. Dr. Gary Spencer our district superintendent wants each church to bring 20-30 people to this meeting. Through this meeting, we will share various ways we can work together. It is also good for pastors and church members from different United Methodist Churches to be in fellowship. Here is some reality! Although there are 2. 6 million people in our Atlantic District, less than 16,000 people attend our churches on an average weekend. This doesn t mean that we are not reaching people and serving those in need we are! It does mean that
we need to adapt the culture around us and change our mission strategy, so we can reach more people with more effective ways. We can do so by sharing our experiences and resources. Jesus said in John 15:8, This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 3. I also want to share the importance of STEWARDSHIP. It is one of our church's core values. It is also one of the membership vows. But it is also one of the challenges our church face. I pray that every member of our church gives their offering and tithe (10%) or at least making efforts toward this goal in this new year. Please make this as one of your New Year's resolutions. Without your financial support along with your services and prayers, our church cannot sustain and accomplish God's mission much longer. As you know, we have had a very difficult time with lack of finances, especially in 2017. But God has helped us to overcome the financial challenge with some extra income through fundraising events, Christmas Offering, the support from local community organizations and F.L. Conference. Our church has been ministering to many people in our community since 1961. I believe that you want this legacy to continue for many more years. When you tithe, two things will surely happen to you. God will richly provide everything for your enjoyment (Malachi 3:10 & 1 Timothy 6:17). You will enable Riverview United Methodist Church continue to touch many lives in Jesus name and bear more fruits for God's glory. So, let us follow Jesus daily, work together for more fruitful ministry, and give our offering and tithe more faithfully for the sake of our own lives as well as our church the church you and I love so dearly! Your help is needed-positions are available: Ushers and Greeters Karen Sharer Choir Members Casey Baker Power Point Preparers and Operators- Pat Davis Thrift Shop Evie Kennedy In recent weeks I have been reading Gayle Bolles detailed, well written and admirably researched history of our church. Included in this were some details, the workings of what we presently call Thrift Shop. As you may know, she was a key volunteer and also long time chairman of the project, begun by our former minister s wife Nellie Isner, in June 2007. Despite the fact that we are far away from the traffic center, the idea was an immediate success. And so, it is today. My heartfelt thanks to our present volunteers: Peggy Bull, Alma McColl, Aleta Dick, Donna Harris, Parti Ray, Nancy Metzger, Margie Johnson, Julie McKeown, Ellie Virgona, Jim Lucas, Jose` Rivera, and of course, Pastor Kim who makes himself available wherever we need him! Thanks also to Tony and Edna DiPardo, who have been our Treasurer s. These dedicated workers spend two or three mornings every week except Christmas, New Year s and Easter weekends and a short vacation period in July. While originally the shop was conceived as a mission as well as Thrift Store. Over the year s we have gone from giving 50 % of our profits to the church budget, until recently we have given 100 % to our own church. While we always want to help in times of financial crises, our volunteers would like to return to our charitable giving also. As in the Prayer of St. Francis of Assissi we are told that it is in giving that we receive. I personally want this to again be our mission in some significant part. We will, of course, still contribute in a major way to the church budget. As always, we welcome anyone wishing to help on workday Wednesday morning and sale days- Friday s and Saturday s, from 9-12. Please call me if you like to organize, price, and/or sort wonderful clothing, decorator items,
paintings, etc. Our profits depend on having an adequate number of workers as does any successful business. You will be richly rewarded by helping others, and I feel sure you will enjoy Christian fellowship with us. In future articles I will list the places to which our shop contributes. Evelyn Kennedy-Chairman P.S. A special thanks again to Gayle for spending the time with me recently regarding information on running the shop. Call me at 677-7445 or 212-3667. I was not always healthy, about 7 years ago I weighed over 180 lbs. I started to exercise such as walking around the block but never enjoyed doing it. In 2011, I was diagnosis with breast cancer, which the doctors caught it in time and I have defeated it. When I was introduced to Zumba by my friend in 2012, I fell in love with it. I fell in love with it because of dancing and it did not even seem like you were exercising as I started to lose my weight and getting fit. So, I talk to my better half about becoming an instructor and he helped me pursued my dream. When I did get my certification in Zumba, I realized I found my enjoyment in teaching others on how to get healthier, exercise by having fun while dancing. Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and performed primarily to Latin American dance music Zumba is an exercise fitness program created by Colombian dancer and cyclist/choreographer Alberto "Beto" "Power Pedal" Perez during the 1990s. Zumba is a trademark owned by Zumba Fitness, LLC. The Brazilian pop singer Claudia Leitte has become the international ambassador to Zumba Fitness. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic music. The choreography incorporates hiphop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Approximately 15 million people take weekly Zumba classes in over 200,000 locations across 180 countries. Zumba classes are typically about an hour long and are taught by instructors licensed by Zumba Fitness, LLC. In one Zumba class, a person can burn between 500-1000 calories, depending on the energy put forth. The music comes from the following dance styles: cumbia, salsa, merengue, mambo, flamenco, cha cha cha, reggaeton, soca, sa mba, hip hop music, axé music and tango. There are nine types of classes, for different levels of age and exertion. [5]
Zumba Gold is a program designed for beginners and older people. Zumba Step is a lower-body workout that incorporates Zumba routines and step aerobics with Latin dance rhythms. Zumba Toning is for people who do their workouts with toning sticks. It targets the abs, thighs, arms, and other muscles throughout the body. This type of Zumba class provides participants with a cardio workout and strength training. Aqua Zumba classes are held in a swimming pool. The instructor leads the class poolside while participants follow in shallow water. Moves have been specially adapted to combine the same dance movements used in a Zumba Fitness class with those used in aqua fitness classes.
