LESSON 2 The Bible is the Word of God MEMORY VERSE: BOTTOM LINE: 2 Timothy 3:16, All scripture is given by inspiration of God (KJV) The Bible is the Word of God TO THE TEACHER: We will cover four points in this lesson: The Bible inspired by God. The Bible and fulfilled prophecies. Jesus quoted the Bible. The Bible works. 1. The Bible was inspired by God. God did not physically write the Bible. God spoke to certain men and told them what to say. (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21) The Bible was written by 40 different men from all walks of life (kings, prophets, tax collectors, fishermen and shepherds). The Bible was written over a period of 1600 years, yet it all fits together because it was directed by God. 2. The Bible is full of hundreds of fulfilled prophecies. The birth, death and resurrection of Christ were all predicted in scripture many years before they happened. (Genesis 3:15, Micah 5:2, Isaiah 9:6, 53: 1-12, Psalm 22, John 2:19-21) The Jews shall be scattered around the world and then become a nation again. Israel became a nation again in 1948 after not being a nation for 1900 years. (Luke 21:24) Continued on next page LESSON 2 PAGE 1

3. Jesus quoted from the Bible. Jesus lived His life according to the Bible. Many times Jesus referred to people in the scriptures as real people (not fictional characters). Jesus talked about the following people: Abel (Luke 11:51) Noah (Matthew 24:37-39) Abraham (John 8:56-58) Issac & Jacob (Matthew 8:11) Jonah (Matthew 12:39-41) 4. The Bible works (James 1:22). When you do what the Bible says life is much better. When you do things your own way life can be hard. For centuries men and women have lived their lives according to the Bible. Nobody has ever figured out a better way to live. The Bible is far and away the best selling book in the history of the world. (Six billion copies.) LESSON 2 PAGE 2

Drama TAKE HOME POINT: Characters: What You Need: Low Price Religion For Sale The Bible Is God s Word Low Price Lou Briefcase Drama Script: (LowPrice Lou enters wearing a cheesy suit, and tie. Carrying a briefcase.) Hey everyone LowPrice Lou here. Don t forget, Lou s the name and selling is my game. That s great pal but we aren t interested in buying anything. We are in the middle of our lesson. Oh I know, but what I got is much better than what you re selling. I m not selling anything. I m teaching about Jesus from the Bible. Oh ya which Bible is that? The Holy Bible, maybe you ve heard of it? Hahaha, that old thing. Come on fella. This is the new mellenium. How many people do you see riding around on horses? What are you talking about? Ya I can see it now. You kiss the wife good bye before you hop on your trusty steed and gallop down the freeway to work. I don t think so friend. Do you have a point or do you just enjoy your own voice? Oh I have a point. You know I can tell right away that you re a straight shooter if you catch my drift, and I hope you do. Someone call security. Continued on next page LESSON 2 PAGE 5

Low Price Religion For Sale Drama Script Continued Let me get to the point. You don t ride your horse to work, because horses are outdated. Just like that relic you have in your hand. Relic? Do you mean the Bible? Of course. Did you know that some parts of that thing were written over five thousand years ago? Actually, I did know that. Of course you did. Let me ask you how can something written three thousand years ago possibly be current today? They didn t even have computers back then. That doesn t mean it isn t current. Of course it does. Name one way that it is current, and I ll give you a dollar. Okay the Ten Commandments. Hahaha that s some of the oldest stuff in there. I know and yet still most of the world s government laws operate on the same principles. Just because you don t get your dollar doesn t mean you should lie. Exactly my point. Thou shalt not lie. Exactly. That s one of the Ten Commandments. No really? You owe me a dollar. Hold on. Hold on. Double or nothing if you can find a second. Continued on next page LESSON 2 PAGE 6

Low Price Religion For Sale Drama Script Continued Okay, how about if you got your wallet out to pay me the dollar and I grabbed it and took off. What then? I would punch you in the nose, sir. Okay settle down. Thou shall not steal is another commandment. You re good. Thank you. You wanna partner up? We could be rich. Not even for a minute. I see. So, what was it you wanted us to see? Uh, well I kinda wrote my own Bible. I saw that it was the bestselling book of all time and I figured. The real Bible wasn t just written by some guy. God told them what to write. Really? Yup. Did God tell you what to write? Not exactly. I think I ll stick with my Bible thanks. Are you sure? My Bible has a Ten Commandments too. Listen to this one. Thou shalt not send multiple spams to my email. Oh well. Ya I m sure. Come back some other time, we really need to get back to our lesson. Alright, nice chatting. I think I ll try the other church across the street. The End LESSON 2 PAGE 7

object lesson Scripture Reference: TAKE HOME POINT: What You Need: Fact or Fantasy? 2 Peter 1:20-21, Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of scripture ever came about by the prophets own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (NIV) The Bible is not a fictional book of stories written by men. The Bible is the Book of Life inspired by God. A Bible A fictional children s book such as Cinderella (make sure that it is a book that the children will recognize) Object Lesson Application: (Hold up the Bible.) This may come as a surprise to you, but not everybody believes that the Bible is the Word of God. In fact, some people believe that the Bible is a book of fairy tales. They will say things like The story of Noah and the Ark or Jonah and the Big Fish did not really happen. Those are just fairy tales made up by some men, just like the book. Scan to see video demonstration. (Hold up Cinderella. ) Did you know that Jesus quoted from most of the Old Testament books? Let s look at what Jesus says about Noah. (Read from Matthew 24:37-39) http://bit.ly/12atjcn Continued on next page LESSON 2 PAGE 8

Fact or Fantasy? Object Lesson Continued But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. It sure sounds like Jesus believed that Noah was a real person, not a fictional character like Cinderella. It sounds like Jesus believed that Noah built an ark and that the flood really happened. If Jesus believes that the stories in the Bible are real then I believe it. Also, the Bible is filled with hundreds of fulfilled prophecies about the Messiah (Jesus). (Read from Isaiah 53:1-10 and talk about how Isaiah was written 700 years before Jesus was born. Point out the specific prophecies that happened to Jesus.) The Bible is different than any other book because it was inspired by God and is full of hundreds of fulfilled prophecies. The other amazing thing about the Bible is that it works. The Bible is The Book of Life. When you are a doer of the Word (James 1:22) and you do what the Bible says then life works better for you. LESSON 2 PAGE 9

short film APPLICATION: Illinois Jones How many of you believe that the Bible is the Word of God? (Allow for response) Did you know that there are other books that some people think are also the Word of God? The Quran, The Book of Mormon, the Book of Dyanetics all claim to be inspired by God. How is the Bible different from these other books? 40 different men wrote the Bible over a period of 1600 years and yet it all fits together. (The other religious books were all written or interpreted by one person.) The Bible is full of hundreds of fulfilled prophecies. Jesus quoted from the Bible and said it was the Word of God. The Bible works. If you do what is says, your life will be good. LESSON 2 PAGE 10

Inter-active lesson Scripture Reference: What you ll learn: What You Need: Green Eggs And Ham 2 Timothy 3:16, All scripture is given by inspiration of God. God spoke to men who wrote down His words. This is how we got the Bible. 1 copy of children s book, Dr. Suess, Green Eggs and Ham Instructions: Select an older child who is a good reader and confident to read the story of Green Eggs and Ham to the children. It is a good idea to give them the heads up so they are familiar with the story. After reading the story ask your kids some questions. Spiritual Application: What happened in the story about Green Eggs and Ham? Have you heard this story before? Who wrote this story? (Many kids will know the answer to this question without you telling them.) Wait a minute. Dr. Seuss wrote this story? I thought that Joey wrote the story since he was the one who read it to us? How do you know that Dr. Seuss wrote this story? Did you see Dr. Seuss write the story? This is similar to how we got the Bible. The Bible is God s Word, but God did not actually write the Bible. For example, Moses wrote the book of Genesis, but he was not alive when Adam and Eve were alive. God told Moses the stories and Moses told us. How do we know the Bible is the Word of God? The Bible was written by 40 different authors over 1,600 hundred years and yet it all fits together like a giant puzzle. It is clearly an eternal book. The Bible contains many fulfilled prophecies. For example, the Bible predicts that Jesus will be born of a virgin in the city of Bethlehem 500 hundred years before the birth of Christ. The Bible works. If you do what it says you will have a good life. LESSON 2 PAGE 11
