vol. cxlii, no. 11 December 2017 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH of SANTA MONICA SENTINEL HORIZONS God so loves the world The season of Advent begins December 3rd this year, the day of our beautiful Christmas Concert. This is a season set aside for us to prepare our hearts and minds for God s most amazing gift of the Christ Child. In love, God chooses to come and live with us as one of us, sharing our joys and sorrows, all the while teaching, healing, and encouraging us to become disciples of the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In Christian parlance, this is called the incarnation which means in the flesh. It s one of the fundamentals of Christian faith. It s also one of the most challenging and mysterious truths about what we believe. Just as in the time of Jesus birth, the world is beset by fear and violence. Like those first shepherds, we wait in the night to hear good news and tidings of great joy. Like the Magi, our hearts seek after light and truth. As we journey through Advent this year, remember that it s all about love God s love for the world and for each and every one of us, for the creation itself, and for all God s children near and far. Hear the angels song assuring us that we need not be afraid. Take heart! God comes in love, again and again, and everything is born anew. UMCOR Kits by Tricia Guerrero, Director of Children & Youth Ministry The hurricanes and natural disasters seemed to bombard our world this year. Homes destroyed and communities devastated. In these critical moments, we as Christians are called to respond when our brothers and sisters are suffering. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) is the humanitarian relief and development arm of The United Methodist Church. They act globally, through our support, to alleviate human suffering and advance hope and healing. Our community heard the call for help this year and we responded over and over again. We as a community began collecting for the UMCOR Hygiene Kits. This endeavor was accomplished by our entire community working together to help those who need it the most. With enthusiasm and heart, our Youth Group and our Messy Church community came forward. Our teens diving into the boxes of donated supplies, organizing them with the help of their youth counselors. Our youngest ones, three and four years old, assembling kits with their parents and grandparents. A Messy Church blessing in worship over the assembled kits, praying for the hands that will receive and use these items. We raised $1,240 and were able to assemble over 125 Hygiene Kits. Yet it didn t stop there. Beyond the kits, we give thanks for the $3,885 that was donated directly by our community to UMCOR for disaster relief. Assembling the UMCOR kits at Messy Church. Our Sanctuary - Symbols of Hope First UMC is pleased to present Ron Theile s writings in a new book called Our Sanctuary - Symbols of Hope. Originally written as monthly installments for this monthly newsletter The Sentinel, we ve compiled each reflection and paired it with photographs of the Sanctuary stained glass windows taken by photographers Fabian Lewkowicz and Allan Walker. Included is a forward by Rev. Patricia Farris. Ron highlights each of the stained glass windows, and includes a brief history and personal reflection. You may pick up a copy at the Sunday Hospitality Table or the church office. Suggested donation of $5 may be given to the Sunday Hospitality Table or the church office. In conjuction with the release of the book, visit the Fireside Room through December to view Shining Through: Photographs of First UMC Sanctuary Stained Glass Windows, by photographer Fabian Lewkowicz.
