Josh 3 Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.

Transcription:

12 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and because they did this evil the LORD gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel. 13 Getting the Ammonites and Amalekites to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms. Judges 3:12-30

14 The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years. 15 Again the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a deliverer Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Judges 3:12-30

16 Now Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a cubit long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. 17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man. 18 After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way those who had carried it. Judges 3:12-30

19 But on reaching the stone images near Gilgal he himself went back to Eglon and said, Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you. The king said to his attendants, Leave us! And they all left. 20 Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his palace and said, I have a message from God for you. As the king rose from his seat, Judges 3:12-30

21 Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the king s belly. 22 Even the handle sank in after the blade, and his bowels discharged. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it. Judges 3:12-30

23 Then Ehud went out to the porch; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them. 24 After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked. They said, He must be relieving himself in the inner room of the palace. Judges 3:12-30

25 They waited to the point of embarrassment, but when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead. 26 While they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the stone images and escaped to Seirah. Judges 3:12-30

27 When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them. 28 Follow me, he ordered, for the LORD has given Moab, your enemy, into your hands. So they followed him down and took possession of the fords of the Jordan that led to Moab; Judges 3:12-30

they allowed no one to cross over. 29 At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one escaped. 30 That day Moab was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace for eighty years. Judges 3:12-30

A) Peace (Judges 2:7)

7 The people served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel. Judges 2:7

B) Sin (Judges 2:10)

10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel. Judges 2:10

C) Oppression (Judges 2:14-15)

14 In his anger against Israel the LORD gave them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist. 15 Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the LORD was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress. Judges 2:14-15

D) Deliverance and Peace (Judges 2:18)

18 Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD relented because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them. Judges 2:18

E) Sin (Judges 2:19)

19 But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways. Judges 2:19

I want to declare to you today that 2018 will be a year of breaking cycles: sin cycles, generational cycles, spiritual apathy cycles and addictive/habitual cycles

1) Sin (Judges 3:12)

12 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and because they did this evil the LORD gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel. Judges 3:12

5 Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods. Judges 3:5-6

Ehud passes the stone images near Gilgal twice (vs. 19 & 26)

2) Oppression (Judges 3:14)

14 The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years. Judges 3:14

22 I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their ancestors did. Judges 2:22

Oppression caused by disobedience is self-inflicted harm

Even when we have failed the Lord, we can rest knowing that vengeance is the Lord s

19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God s wrath, for it is written: It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord. Romans 12:19

3) Deliverance (Judges 3:15-22)

15 Again the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a deliverer Ehud, a lefthanded man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud had made a doubleedged sword about a cubit long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. Judges 3:15-22

17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man. 18 After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way those who had carried it. 19 But on reaching the stone images near Gilgal he himself went back to Eglon and said, Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you. The king said to his attendants, Leave us! And they all left. Judges 3:15-22

20 Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his palace and said, I have a message from God for you. As the king rose from his seat, 21 Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the king s belly. 22 Even the handle sank in after the blade, and his bowels discharged. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it. Judges 3:15-22

Out of all these people 700 choice men were left-handed; each one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. Judges 20:16

Ehud teaches us to embrace both our weakness and uniqueness as motivators for increasing our reliance on God

9 But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it JUDGES the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Breaking cycles of destruction require the activation and revitalization of the Word of God in our lives

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17

4) Peace (Judges 3:30)

29 At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one escaped. 30 That day Moab was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace for eighty years. Judges 3:29-30

You have the potential to usher in eighty years (a lifetime) of peace with your actions!
