Service of Divine Worship AUGUST 5, 2018 9:00AM, 10:45AM Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall We rest our hearts in God s presence as we prepare for worship PRELUDE COME AWAY FROM RUSH AND HURRY We celebrate God s presence with us and ask for his Spirit to work powerfully among us WELCOME & INVOCATION God invites us to worship him in spirit and in truth CALL TO WORSHIP PSALM 34:1-3 Leader: I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. People: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Leader: Oh, magnify the Lord with me, People: And let us exalt his name together! 1

We sing praises to God for who he is and for what he has done SONGS OF PRAISE COME, PEOPLE OF THE RISEN KING Come, people of the risen King who delight to bring him praise. Come all, and tune your hearts to sing to the Morning Star of grace. From the shifting shadows of the earth we will lift our eyes to him, Where steady arms of mercy reach to gather children in. Chorus: Rejoice! Rejoice! Let ev ry tongue rejoice! One heart, one voice; O Church of Christ, rejoice! Come, those whose joy is morning sun, and those weeping through the night. Come, those who tell of battles won, and those struggling in the fight. For his perfect love will never change, and his mercies never cease, But follow us through all our days with the certain hope of peace. Chorus Come, young and old from ev ry land, men and women of the faith; Come, those with full or empty hands, find the riches of his grace. Over all the world his people sing, shore to shore we hear them call, The truth that cries through ev ry age, Our God is all in all! Chorus 2x CCLI Song # 5232617; Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty, Stuart Townend; 2007 Thankyou Music (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing); CCLI License #152421 MAN OF SORROWS Man of sorrows, Lamb of God, by his own betrayed. The sin of man and wrath of God has been on Jesus laid. Silent as he stood accused, beaten, mocked, and scorned, Bowing to the Father s will, he took a crown of thorns. Chorus: Oh, that rugged cross, my salvation, Where your love poured out over me. Now my soul cries out, hallelujah, praise and honor unto thee. Sent of heaven, God s own Son, to purchase and redeem, And reconcile the very ones who nailed him to that tree. Chorus Now my debt is paid, it is paid in full by the precious blood that my Jesus spilled. Now the curse of sin has no hold on me. Whom the Son sets free, oh, is free indeed. (repeat) Chorus See the stone is rolled away, behold the empty tomb. Hallelujah, God be praised, he s risen from the grave! Chorus Praise and honor unto thee. CCLI Song #6476063; Words & Music by M. Crocker & B. Ligertwood; 2013 Hillsong Music Publishing, Admin. CapitolCMGPublishing.com; CCLI License #152421 2

We acknowledge our need of forgiveness and renewal through the cleansing blood of Jesus CONFESSION OF SIN Merciful and mighty God, we humbly stand before you in need of your grace. We confess that we do not grieve our sin or savor our forgiveness as we ought. Instead of worshiping Christ, who paid our debt of sin on the cross, we try to save ourselves through moralism and religious behavior. By your grace reveal to us our self-righteousness, pride, and hypocrisy. By your Spirit, give us a hunger for the forgiveness that only you can provide. For your glory, grow us in humility and compassion. We ask all this in the name of our Lord and King Jesus Christ. Amen. God reminds us of his promise of forgiveness in Christ ASSURANCE OF PARDON EPHESIANS 2:4-6 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus We enjoy and extend the peace of the gospel to one another GIVING OF THE PEACE Leader: Because we have been saved by grace we now have peace with God and with one another. May the peace of Christ be with you! People: And also with you! We give thanks to God and bring our needs to him CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER You can join us in praying for our community and world this morning; the Flock Notes are on page 9 in your worship guide. If you would like to submit a prayer request, fill out the prayer request card and place it in the offering plate. If you would like someone to pray with you after the service, men and women from our leadership will be available in the front. 3

As recipients of his grace, we give back to God a portion of what is already his PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS We want to be a generous community. In response to the grace we ve received, we seek to give cheerfully, diligently, proportionately, and sacrificially (2 Cor 8:1-15). Many of our people give online (mcleanpres.org); you can also place your gift in the offering plate. Please also fill out the Keeping Connected pad and pass it down your row and back. We ready our hearts to receive the preaching of God s word SONG OF PREPARATION COME AWAY FROM RUSH AND HURRY Come away from rush and hurry to the stillness of God s peace. From our vain ambition s worry, come to Christ to find release. Come away from noise and clamor, life s demands and frenzied pace. Come to join the people gathered here to seek and find God s face. In the pastures of God s goodness, we lie down to rest our souls. From the waters of God s mercy, we drink deeply, are made whole. At the table of God s presence, all the saints are richly fed. With the oil of God s anointing into service we are led. Come then, children, with your burdens life s confusions, fears and pain Leave them at the cross of Jesus; take instead his kingdom s reign. Bring your thirsts, for he will quench them he alone will satisfy. All our longings find attainment when to self we gladly die. Bring your thirsts, for he will quench them he alone will satisfy. All our longings find attainment when to self we gladly die. Words by M. Dawn; Music by A. Nettleton, 1825; Arr. by C. Robison; 2014 Chad Robison; CCLI License #152421 God speaks to us through the reading of his word SCRIPTURE READING LUKE 9:10-17 (PEW BIBLE P. 866) Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! God speaks to us through the preaching of his word SERMON HUNGRY FOR MORE 3. Community 4

God gives us a visible sign to confirm his covenant promise in Christ THE LORD S SUPPER During the sacrament of the Lord s Supper, true believers who repent of their sins and desire to live as followers of Christ, who revealed himself to be fully God and man in one person, are invited to partake. Children who have not been received by the Session into communing membership after a public confession of faith should refrain even though they may have personally received the Savior, because of the responsibility of the recipient to discern the Lord s body (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). PRAYER OF FAITH FOR THOSE PARTAKING OF THE SACRAMENT Gracious Lord, I do not presume to come to this your Table trusting in my own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. In my own righteousness I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your Table. But, by your grace, grant that I may draw near to you by faith; eat and drink in remembrance that you died for me. And grant that I may feed on you in my inner being by faith with great thanksgiving. Lord, please open the eyes of my heart that I may know the hope of your calling, the riches of the glory of my inheritance and the surpassing greatness of your power toward me in Jesus Christ. Amen. Those who do not have a personal saving relationship with Jesus Christ are asked to refrain from partaking and are urged to use this time to meditate on one of the following prayers: PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. PRAYER OF BELIEF Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. PRAYER FOR CHILDREN OBSERVING COMMUNION Lord Jesus, I do not understand everything about this communion service. But I know that it is good. Jesus, when I feel hungry for the bread, please help me to hunger for you instead. When I wish I could taste the sweetness of the juice, please help me instead to think of the sweetness of your love. Lord Jesus, thank you that your broken body and your blood paid for my sin. I love you Lord. Amen. 5

We remember Christ s death, celebrate his resurrection, enjoy his presence, and anticipate his return As recipients of God s grace, we give to help those in need SERVING OF THE BREAD AND THE CUP As soon as you receive the elements you may eat the bread and drink the cup in remembrance of Christ who died for you. DEACONS OFFERING As we ve received a tangible expression of God s love and kindness for us, we offer a tangible expression of care and concern for those in need within our flock and community. Please designate your gift by writing Deacons Offering on your check or envelope. We respond to God s word through song SONG OF SENDING BEHOLD THE LAMB Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, slain for us and we remember The promise made that all who come in faith find forgiveness at the cross. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of his sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of peace around the table of the King. The body of our Savior Jesus Christ, torn for you eat and remember; The wounds that heal, the death that brings us life paid the price to make us one. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of his sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of love around the table of the King. The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, shed for you drink and remember He drained death s cup that all may enter in to receive the life of God. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of his sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of grace around the table of the King. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond and to remember Our call to follow in the steps of Christ as his body here on earth. As we share in his suffering, we proclaim Christ will come again! And we ll join in the feast of heaven around the table of the King, Around the table of the King.
