Grace Episcopal Church November 26, 2017 Ministers of Us Priest in Charge Joan Anthony Preacher Barb Mcister Music & Arts Ann Strickland A bell rings. We listen to the longing of our hearts. We remain SEATED to sing together. Gathering Song Shall Be Well

THE GUEST HOUSE This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, Some momentary awareness comes As an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they are a crowd of sorrows, Who violently sweep your house Empty of its furniture, Still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out For some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice. Meet them at the door laughing and invite them in. Be grateful for whatever comes. Because each has been sent As a guide from beyond. Rumi Page 2 November 26, 2017

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD A Call to Worship After the gathering is complete we are invited to stand as the Presider says Presider People We gather in this place today. In the name of God who creates life. In the name of Jesus who loves life. In the name of the Spirit who is the fire of life. Amen. We remain STANDING and sing together Opening Hymn Morning Has Broken Page 3 November 26, 2017

Collect of the Day Leader People Leader The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. God of glory you love us with an everlasting love and show us the way to justice and peace. In Jesus the Word incarnate you have claimed the world as your own. Grant that we may live as Christ s body on earth and with all the saints, enter into heaven at the last day. Amen. We SIT for the Reading WE TELL THE STORY The First Reading Ezekial 34:11-16,20-24 Thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and wide, I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken. The Reader says The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Page 4 November 26, 2017

We are invited to STAND and say the Psalm responsively. Psalm 95:1-7a Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. We SIT for the Reading The Second Reading Ephesians 1:15-23 I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. The Reader says The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Page 5 November 26, 2017

We STAND and sing together Our Gospel Song Rise Words & Music by Eddie Vedder; additional lyrics by Scott Lawrence Page 6 November 26, 2017

The Presider then introduces the Gospel by saying People The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you Lord Christ. The Gospel Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus said, When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you? And the king will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. Then he will say to those at his left hand, You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer, Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you? Then he will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. After the Gospel the Presider will say People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Homily q Page 7 November 26, 2017

OUR RESPONSE TO THE STORY After the Homily we STAND and we re-affirm our faith in creed and prayer. We believe in God above us, maker and sustainer of all life, of sun and moon, of water and earth, of male and female. We believe in God beside us, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, born of a woman s womb, servant of the poor. He was tortured and nailed to a tree. Knowing full passion and deep sorrow, he died forsaken. He descended into the earth to the place of death. On the third day he rose from the tomb. He ascended into heaven to be everywhere present. And his Kingdom will one day be known. We believe in God within us, The Holy Spirit of pentecostal fire, life-giving breath of the Church, she is the Spirit of healing and forgiveness, source of resurrection and of life everlasting. Amen. Presider Presider Presider OUR CONFESSION God of compassion, you have searched us out and known us. that we are is open to you. Forgive us, when we deny dignity to ourselves and to each other; forgive us, when we use our power to dominate, and our weakness to manipulate; forgive us, when we evade responsibility and forget to live with an abundant heart; remember us, when we lose our way. Once again, we turn to you God; we acknowledge our failings, we claim your love; we choose to remain whole. God of welcome, you have called us home to you; Let us walk in your presence, with love in our hearts and truth in our minds. At the end of our journey, may we know the joy of our homecoming and the welcome of your embrace. Amen. The Peace We continue with the sharing of God s Peace Presider People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Page 11 November 26, 2017

As we finish exchanging God s peace with each other, we STAND and sing this song. Song to Offer Bridge Over Troubled Water Written by Paul Simon When you're weary, feeling small When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough and friends just can't be found Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down When you're down and out When you're on the street When evening falls so hard I will comfort you I'll take your part, oh, when darkness comes And pain is all around Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Sail on silver girl Sail on by Your time has come to shine your dreams are on their way See how they shine Oh, if you need a friend I'm sailing right behind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind Universal Music Publishing Group Page 12 November 26, 2017

THE CELEBRATION OF OUR SACRED MEAL We continue to stand. Once the Table is set with the gifts of our hearts and hands we remember God s extraordinary gift of welcome and love, and we ask that once again the ordinary things of life bread, wine, ourselves would be vehicles of that welcome. Presider People Presider People Presider People The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon and stars; earth, wind and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, male and female, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away. And yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity lifting our voices to you as we sing By Ann Strickland Page 13 November 26, 2017

Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus, the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again he gave thanks to you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you: This is the cup of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Now, gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet of the world. this we ask through Jesus Christ. By him and with him and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forever. Amen. Page 14 November 26, 2017

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Presider and People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking and Sharing of the Bread and Wine The Presider breaks the consecrated Bread and the silence is broken with these words Presider People eluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast! eluia! Page 15 November 26, 2017

A Song of Remembrance After the bread is broken we follow the lead of the Music Circle and sing the following anthem. Now we are invited to share the gifts of communion. At Grace Church all are welcome to receive the bread and wine. The Presider extends that invitation by saying The Gifts of God for the People of God. are invited to receive the bread and the wine. Please know that at Grace Church this common meal is for all who feel moved to receive. This sacrament is God s gift to all, and is not tied to membership, doctrine or creed. Please assist the Chalice Bearers by tipping the cup from the base. Please tell your server if you prefer a wafer that is free from gluten, soy and dairy. Music is offered as we receive the bread and cup. Music During Communion Blackbird by John Lennon & Paul McCartney Page 16 November 26, 2017

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton & Will Jennings Would you know my name If I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same If I saw you in heaven? I must be strong and carry on 'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven Would you hold my hand If I saw you in heaven? Would you help me stand If I saw you in heaven? I'll find my way through night and day 'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven Would you know my name If I saw you in heaven? Following communion we are invited to share the sounds of silence with one another. The quiet will last a few minutes and will begin and end with a bell. For all of us, young and otherwise, these simple moments of stillness are offered as a chance to find ourselves held in the timeless presence of God. Song after Communion Everything s Gonna Be Right By Bob Marley No woman no cry (4x) Everything s gonna be all right (4x) GOING OUT INTO GOD S WORLD Our Prayer after Communion After the song, we STAND and say together Living God, we thank you that in this sacrament you make yourself known to us. From now on, whenever we walk in strange places, we will find your footprints there; whenever we meet with unknown faces we will see your image there; whenever we stumble into unexpected joy, we will feel your heartbeat there. Wherever we go we start from here. Loving God, send us now into the world in peace, and grant us the strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Page 18 November 26, 2017

The Blessing The Presider offers the blessing. May the love of God, the grace of Christ, and the Spirit s peace be with you always. Amen. We stay STANDING and sing Closing Hymn You ve Got a Friend Written by Carole King. When you're down and troubled And you need a helping hand And nothing, nothing is going right Close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest night You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I'll come running to see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall you have to do is call And I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. You've got a friend If the sky above you Should turn dark and full of clouds And that old north wind should begin to blow Keep your head together And call my name out loud, yeah Soon I'll be knocking upon your door You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I'll come running, oh yes I will To see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall you have to do is call And I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend When people can be so cold They'll hurt you, and desert you And take your soul if you let them Oh yeah, but don't you let them You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I'll come running to see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall you have to do is call And I ll be there, yes I will.
