Prelude Diademata arr. Bruce Greer Confession and Forgiveness (Please stand as you are able) P: Let us begin in the name in which we are Baptized, + the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: As one of the blessings of Baptism is the forgiveness of sins, let us turn back to our Lord, for if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1:8-9) (Silence for reflection and self-examination) P: Most merciful God, C: We confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: There is joy in heaven over every sinner who repents. By the grace of God in + Christ Jesus, who gave himself for us all, your sins are forgiven and you are made free. Rejoice with the angels and with one another! We are home in God s mercy, now and forever. C: Amen.

Gathering Hymn 10,000 Reasons Refrain: Bless the Lord, oh my soul, O my soul; Worship God s holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul; I ll worship your holy name. The sun comes up, it s a new day dawning, It s time to sing your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes. Refrain You re rich in love and you re slow to anger. Your name is great and your heart is kind. For all your goodness, I will keep on singing; Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. Refrain And on that day, when my strength is failing, The end draws near, and my time has come; Still my soul will sing your praise unending. Ten thousand years and then forevermore! First Reading Ezekiel 34:11-16 11For thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. 12 As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13 I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. 14 I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord GOD. 16 I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Reader: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Second Reading R: O come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! C: Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! R: For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. C: In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. R: The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed. C: O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! R: For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, C: and the sheep of his hand. R: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 6 Psalm 95:1-7a

Musical Meditation (8am) If You Search With All Your Heart Craig Courtney (11am) In the Bleak Midwinter words: Christina Rossetti; music: Mary E. Caldwell (Please stand as you are able for the Gospel Acclamation) Gospel Acclamation (from John 6:68) Reader: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 25th Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel Matthew 25:31-46 31When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.' 37 Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' 40 And the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.' 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was 7

hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44 Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?' 45 Then he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Reader: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. (Please be seated) Sermon Pastor Paula After a brief silence for meditation, please stand as you are able for the hymn of the day 8

Hymn of the Day Beautiful Savior Public Domain Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. 9

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Prayers of the Church L: Lord, in your mercy, C: Hear our prayer. Sharing of the Peace P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. (Please be seated following Sharing of Peace) Community Time-During this time we would like to welcome and introduce guests at SLC. THE MEAL Communion Distribution-All Baptized Christians are welcome to join with us in this meal where we believe the true body and blood of Christ are really present and received under the form of bread and wine. At SLC, we commune by Intinction. As you are ushered forward, please come to the stations on either side of the Baptismal font, extend your hand to receive the bread (or ask for a gluten free wafer), and then dip it either into the wine or grape juice. White grape juice is available as a substitute and is offered in the second cup. You are also invited to remain at the altar rail for a brief time of prayer and meditation if you wish. Adults who do not receive the supper or children who have not received First Communion instruction are encouraged to come forward for a blessing. As we celebrate the 500 th anniversary of the year of the Reformation, here is something you may not know about Martin Luther and the Reformation. Education was set on a far-reaching course of reforming thanks in part to Luther s advocacy and ideas that a proper, well-organized and broad education for all children not just those of the wealthy elite would benefit the state as well as the church.
