CHRIST is important to us YOU are important to us in our worship in our worship in our study in our study in our fellowship in our fellowship in our lives. in our lives. HOLY COMMUNION When the members of St. John s Lutheran Church, (LCMS) celebrate the Lord s Supper, we confess the Real Presence of Christ s Body and Blood in the Bread and Wine, given and shed for the forgiveness of our sins. (1 Cor 10:16 & 1 Cor 11:23-26) We believe that Christ s Body and Blood are present in, with and under the elements of the Holy Supper. (Luther s Small Catechism) Members should register their intent to commune on the pew card. If you are visiting with us and you desire to join with us in communion fellowship in agreement with these beliefs, please speak to one of the Pastors or the elder on duty before the service. HIS VISION FOR US: St. John s will be known for being involved in our changing community, for providing leadership in our changing world, and for serving others in Christian love. We will welcome our diverse guests with open arms. Our friendly, loving and accepting people will engage our guests, mentor them in the faith, and inspire many to become members. Our members will be motivated by the cross to be actively engaged in ministry, showing love and care to others. We will encourage one another, nurture one another, and enthusiastically serve our God together! HIS GOAL FOR US: We will pray and work with singleness of purpose to expand the impact of our ministry to God s children of all ages, with special emphasis on young families, by developing new ways to strengthen the relationship between St. John s, our members and our community, providing the facilities and resources to involve more people in ministry and outreach. WELCOME CENTER Greeters are present at the Welcome Center in the atrium adjacent to our sanctuary before and after the service to answer any questions you may have, provide directions to restrooms, classrooms, etc. If you are a first time guest, we also have a gift for you. Please pass your card to the center aisle to be gathered during the offering. CELL PHONES Please turn your cell phones off before the service begins. ALTAR FLOWERS The flowers which grace our altar are given by Larry & Pat Milleville and family in loving memory of Gertrude Winter. AS WE GATHER As the Church Year is approaching its close, we turn our focus to the last things. The very last thing that we confess in the Apostles Creed is that we believe in the life everlasting. In Revelation, John describes the heavenly city of God and tells us that the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. Brilliant brightness has always been associated with the seeing of God, from the time when Moses had to veil his face because it reflected the dazzling presence of the almighty Lord. As we come into His presence for worship, we have a partial sense of that glory as we await that time beyond time, when we shall experience it fully in the life everlasting in His heavenly kingdom. RINGING OF THE BELLS PRELUDE ANNOUNCEMENTS + PREPARATION + HYMN... Glory Be To God The Father [LSB 506] INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES Revelation 4:11; 15:4 Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created. Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. All nations will come and worship You, for Your righteous acts have been revealed. Alleluia! 3

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION We confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father. Merciful Father, with heartfelt repentance we confess our sin. We are sinful from birth and daily sin in thought, word, and deed. Our actions have been unkind and often have resulted in evil. Our words have been hurtful, and we have not always honored Your name in our speaking. We have left undone many things that could have brought glory and praise to You. We do not remain focused on looking with eager expectation to Your return in glory and have become taken in by the fleeting pleasures of this world. O Lord, grant us Your grace and the blessing of forgiveness. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, lead us to amend our sinful lives, that we grow daily in righteousness and be bringers of peace in our time. Because of the great sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, on the cross of Calvary, God promises full and free forgiveness. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. As you believe, so may it be. Amen. + WORD + INTROIT Psalm 48:11 14; antiphon: Mark 13:13b The one who endures to the end will be saved. Let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of Your judgments! Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. The one who endures to the end will be saved. HYMN OF PRAISE... From All That Dwell Below The Skies.. [LSB 816] SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. O Lord, by Your bountiful goodness release us from the bonds of our sins, which by reason of our weakness we have brought upon ourselves, that we may stand firm until the day of our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING... Daniel 12:1 3 (Those who are named in the Book of Life will be delivered.) 12 At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 16 Preserve me, O God, for in You I take refuge. Men: I say to the LORD, You are my Lord; I have no good apart from You. Women: As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. Men: Women: Men: Women: Men: The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; You hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let Your holy one see corruption. 5

You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE... Hebrews 10:11 25 (The Lord will not remember the sins of the faithful anymore.) 11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds, 17 then he adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. 19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. VERSE Mark 13:13b Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. The one who endures to the end will be saved. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL... Mark 13:1 13 (The one who stands firm to the end will be saved.) 13 And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings! 2 And Jesus said to him, Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not 6

be thrown down. 3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished? 5 And Jesus began to say to them, See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, I am he! and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains. 9 But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. 10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. MINISTRY OF MUSIC... Sing My Soul Cries out.by Praise and Worship Choir Irish Melody, words by Rory Cooney. Arranged by Mark Hayes. Scripture References: Luke 1:46-55/v. 53a He has filled the hungry with good things. CATECHISM The Second Article In his What does this mean? reflecting on the Second Article of the Apostles Creed, Martin Luther reminds us that our final and eternal calling is `to live under our Lord in His kingdom and serve Him as we share in the glory of heaven. Let us joyfully confess the article that tells of our redemption. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold 7

or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. HYMN OF THE DAY... Once He Came In Blessing.... [LSB 333] SERMON... Pay Attention......Mark 13:1-13 OFFERING OFFERTORY... Gracious God, You Send Great Blessings. [LSB 782] PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. For the Church, the gathering of God s forgiven people, that we be of support and encouragement to one another as we await the day of the Lord s return, let us pray to the Lord. For our nation, our state, our local community, and our neighborhoods, that justice prevail in our courts and in all centers of government as we await the day of the final judgment, that we lead lives that are peaceful and secure, let us pray to the Lord. For those who bear the responsibilities of being leaders in the Church, our Synod president; our district president; and our circuit visitor, that they find support and joy in their service, and that many young men and women would be led into vocations of service in the Church, encouraged by our prayers and our gifts, let us pray to the Lord. For those with special need for our petitions in these times as the day of Christ s return draws ever closer, including the sick and hospitalized, the shut-ins, those facing challenges in employment or in other parts of their lives, [including...], that their needs be met according to God s gracious plan, let us pray to the Lord. 8

For the proper use of the good gifts God has granted us, that we be thankful for all that we need to support our lives, that we be of blessing to our families, our neighbors, and our communities, let us pray to the Lord. As we join in prayer, we thank You, Lord, for the faithful witness left to us by Your saints, those we have known personally in our lives and those from times past whose witness continues to inspire and inform us. Grant that Your Holy Spirit lead us in ways of peace as we await the resurrection of the body and the glory of the life everlasting. Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. LORD S PRAYER BENEDICTION The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Numbers 6:24 26 Amen. HYMN... My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less..
