S T. ANDREW S Lutheran Church 1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210 Christ the King November 25, 2018 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is the red worship book found in your pew racks. Service music, indicated with a page number, can be found in the front portion of the book. Hymns, indicated by number, are found in the back portion of the book. Congregational responses are printed in bold type. PRELUDE CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS b GATHERING b All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who calls us into an everlasting hope, who guides us to springs of the water of life, who enlightens us with the spirit of wisdom. Amen. One with the communion of saints in all times and places, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. O God, our merciful redeemer, we confess the ways we live only for ourselves. We fail to see you in our neighbor s face. We turn our ears from voices that cry out, be they the closest of friends and family or strangers amidst us. We pass by the hungry and the oppressed assuming there is nothing we can do. In your great mercy, forgive our sin and strengthen us for service to all in need; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain kneeling as the Pastor offers words of absolution; God s forgiveness in grace, concluding as follows. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake, God forgives you all your sin. Blessed are you! Rejoice and be glad, beloved people of God. Amen

GATHERING SONG: Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending ELW Hymn 435 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE ELW Page 120 HYMN OF PRAISE: This is the Feast ELW Page 122 PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty and ever-living God, you anointed your beloved Son to be priest and sovereign forever. Grant that all the people of the earth, now divided by the power of sin, may be united by the glorious and gentle rule of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. We sit b WORD b CHILDREN S SERMON (11:00 a.m.) FIRST READING: DANIEL 7:9-10, 13-14 9As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. 10A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. 13As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. 14To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 93: The following refrain will be sung first by the cantor and then by the congregation each time thereafter. The Lord reigns, clothed in glory; drape yourself, O God, in power! REFRAIN You have made the world firm, never weakened; your rule is from of old, since time began. REFRAIN God, the rivers call out with their voices, the waters have sung with thunder in the deep. REFRAIN You, God, are stronger than the waves, you are higher, higher than us all. REFRAIN Truly your promise is greater than imagined. Holy is your house, until the end of time. REFRAIN SECOND READING: REVELATION 1:4B-8 4bGrace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. 8 I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL PROCESSION: The following refrain will be sung first by the cantor and then by the congregation each time thereafter. Cantor: I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end, the beginning and the end. REFRAIN TWICE The Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: JOHN 18:33-37 33 Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? 34 Jesus answered, Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me? 35 Pilate replied, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done? 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. 37 Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. We sit. GOSPEL PROCESSION: The following refrain will be sung first by the cantor and then by the congregation each time thereafter. Cantor: I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end, the beginning and the end. REFRAIN TWICE SERMON We stand and sing. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each intercession will end with Lord in your mercy, to which we respond: Hear our prayer. b MEAL b PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. We greet one another with a gesture of peace using these or similar words: Peace be with you. We sit. OFFERTORY ANTHEM: In Christ Alone Keith Getty and Stuart Townend We stand as the gifts are presented. OFFERTORY PRAYER THE GREAT THANKSGIVING ELW page 129 THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. We sit.

LAMB OF GOD HOLY COMMUNION All are welcome to commune. Communion will be received at the altar rail by intinction; we receive the consecrated bread and dip it into the chalice. Those unable to partake of wine or wheaten bread are assured that the Church affirms our Lord s presence in, with, and under each element alone; however, gluten free wafers and grape juice are available. Please let the Pastor or Lay Assistant know of your need.
