Sunday January 28 th 2018 The Word of God A Survey of the Bible Part 6D Your Descendants After You 1). Ge 50:21 "Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones." And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. 22 So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father's household. And Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. The Book of Genesis comes to an end with a word picture foreshadowing the circumstances that will exist during the 7 th Day, the Millennial Kingdom with respect to the Children of Israel. a). At the very beginning of God s revelation to Man He set out a period of restoration at the conclusion of which a Man and a Woman were to rule together in the 7th Day, the Day of Rest, and this is the day we see foreshadowed at the end of the first Book of the Bible. Power Point Slides 1-2 b). Joseph, as a type of Christ is ruling over all of Egypt, picturing the world and Joseph s brothers having repented of their treatment of him, picturing Israel in repentance for killing their King, are with Joseph and are the preeminent people in the land, picturing Israel at the head of the nations ruling with Christ from Jerusalem over the nations of the earth during the Kingdom Age De 28:13 "And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them. And through this foreshadowing of a position of rulership with Christ, at the head of the nations, the Children of Israel in Egypt with Joseph must also be seen as a picture of the wife of Jehovah, fulfilling the foundational type from Genesis Chapter 1 and the type of Keturah s marriage to Abraham in Genesis Chapter 25 and Esther s marriage to Ahasuerus in the Book of that name. THE THE WORD OF GOD PART 6D 1

The time seen here in - Es 5:1 Now it happened on the third day that Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the king's palace, across from the king's house, while the king sat on his royal throne in the royal house, facing the entrance of the house. 2 So it was, when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, that she found favor in his sight, and the king held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. Then Esther went near and touched the top of the scepter. Power Point Slides 3-9 c). And it is so important for us to keep this end result in mind as we begin to look at the Book of Exodus as this is a Book which now takes us back to a time preceding that foreshadowed at the end of Genesis and deals with the Children of Israel being delivered from Egypt to be taken to the land promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to receive that land as their inheritance and to rule with God, as the name Israel suggests, within a Theocracy, with God in their midst Ex 6:6 "Therefore say to the children of Israel: 'I am the LORD; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 'I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 'And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the LORD.'" And once again, the events in this Book, although a record of Israel s history at this time, also foreshadow the time of Israel s deliverance beyond the time of Jacob s Trouble, when the One greater than Moses will return to regather those who have survived the Tribulation, along with the resurrected OT saints to this same land in fulfillment of God s promise to Abraham and his descendants. Just as we saw foreshadowed at the end of Genesis. d). In this respect the Book of Exodus and the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ are companion books. Exodus sets out the apocalyptic picture concerning Israel and the nations in a type that is seen in fulfillment in the Revelation. e). And through the word picture given to us in Exodus which finds its fulfillment in the Revelation is another important detail for us to note. Simply, THE THE WORD OF GOD PART 6D 2

that which God has set in place with respect to the Man and the Woman and rulership in the 7 th Day is not accomplished in the events recorded in the Book of Exodus. f). The accomplishment of this is seen in the Revelation, an accomplishment that still awaits its manifestation in time yet future. g). God, at the beginning of Genesis set out a restorative process that took 6 days to complete setting an unchangeable pattern that must be followed to return fallen Man to the position for which he was created Ge 1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion With the restoration of fallen Man taking 6 days = 6000 years to complete as it follows the established pattern 2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. And so, as well as giving exquisite details concerning end time events that remain yet future even now, Exodus also details the process by which God s restorative pattern is to be brought to pass with respect to Israel as a nation and the reason why this process is necessary for them as it is in this Book that we witness the beginning of their fall so to speak, from their high calling as God s firstborn son. h). And let s also remember that the promise that was given to Abraham involves both the heavenly and the earthly realm of the Kingdom Ge 22:17 "blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. And that which we see recorded in Exodus with the history of the Children of Israel is moving us inexorably towards the events of Matthew Chapters 12 and 13 and Matthew Chapter 21, to the formation of the one new man in Christ and the Judgment Seat of Christ beyond. i). That which we see in Exodus with the Children of Israel is moving us towards the birth of Abraham s spiritual descendants - Ga 3:29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. THE THE WORD OF GOD PART 6D 3

And reveals that which Abraham s spiritual descendants are to learn concerning the restorative process being worked out in their lives. Therefore, the scripture admonishes us - 1Co 10:11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. Heb 2:1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. Re 2:25 "But hold fast what you have till I come. 2). Ex 1:8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we; 10 "come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land." 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel. 13 So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor. 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage-in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor. 15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; 16 and he said, "When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live." We had seen last week that sometime after the death of Joseph, the death of his brothers and all that generation and before the birth of Moses that a new king arose over Egypt. And he was a different kind of king, being an Assyrian and not an Egyptian, following an Assyrian invasion of Egypt around 1584BC 1524BC. a). And then as we consider these historical events we will understand that God is providing another word picture for us through the detail of them concerning His people Israel and what awaits them yet future. THE THE WORD OF GOD PART 6D 4

b). To begin to understand this word picture let s make sure that we are clear with our understanding of the types. The Children of Israel dwelling in Egypt at this time, before the coming of the new king, pictures the Children of Israel scattered among the Gentile nations, Egypt being a type of the world, which is a condition that has existed from the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities to the present day and also takes us forward to the time when those Jews located in geographical Israel at present, who are there by their own efforts, will themselves be sold as slaves into the Gentile nations at the midpoint of the Tribulation Lu 21:24 "And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. c). And the Jewish nation, wherever they have been and currently are, located in the world, before the revealing of Antichrist, have become prosperous and wealthy; the very conditions that we found in the years of plenty in Pharaoh s dream in the days of Joseph. d). But then along with Jewish prosperity throughout this time has come anti-semitic persecution at the hands of the Gentile nations, that has existed since the days of Moses and the originator of this anti-semitic persecution is the one who has sought to thwart God s purpose from the beginning the god of this world. And he has worked through the nations of the world over millennia of time to one end Ps 83:2 For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; And those who hate You have lifted up their head. 3 They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, And consulted together against Your sheltered ones. 4 They have said, "Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, That the name of Israel may be remembered no more." 5 For they have consulted together with one consent; They form a confederacy against You: And God has allowed and will allow this persecution to chasten the nation to bring them to repentance. And so, as we read the beginning of the Book of Exodus, the new king over Egypt was the Gentile ruler that the god of this world would use to attempt to destroy the Jewish people. And this attempt became paramount because of the promise made to Abraham and what God would say about the status of the Children of Israel, which we shall look at in detail later - Ge 22:15 Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: "By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and THE THE WORD OF GOD PART 6D 5

have not withheld your son, your only son - 17 "blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice." Ex 4:22 "Then you shall say to Pharaoh, 'Thus says the LORD: "Israel is My son, My firstborn. e). And then the introduction of an Assyrian Pharaoh, who would be the one to try to eradicate the Jewish people foreshadows the coming of a future Assyrian who will attempt to do the very same thing - Isa 10:24 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts: "O My people, who dwell in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrian. He shall strike you with a rod and lift up his staff against you, in the manner of Egypt. Mic 5:6 They shall waste with the sword the land of Assyria, And the land of Nimrod at its entrances; Thus He shall deliver us from the Assyrian, When he comes into our land And when he treads within our borders. And we will note in this verse from Micah the connection between the Assyrian and the land of Nimrod Nimrod being, we will remember, the foundational type for the Assyrian Pharaoh and the Assyrian Antichrist. f). And the fact that the Assyrian Pharaoh is a new king, a different type of king, being ethnically different from the Egyptians foreshadows the Assyrian Antichrist who will be a different type of king, being the seed of Satan spoken of in Genesis Chapter 3. 3). Now, even though the coming of the Assyrian Pharaoh and his treatment of the Children of Israel picture that future day of the Assyrian Antichrist, the first 15 verses of Exodus Chapter 2 present a picture that drops back before this time to events surrounding the birth, death, resurrection and ascension of the Lord. a). Ex 1:22 So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "Every son who is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive." We will remember from last time that Pharaoh s command to kill all male Jewish babies is seen again in the actions of Herod at the birth of Christ THE THE WORD OF GOD PART 6D 6

Mt 2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. b). Within the timeframe of Pharaoh s command to kill the male children, Moses is born. Now, Moses also is a type of Christ. But unlike Isaac and Joseph there is no mention of anything supernatural about his birth, rather Moses birth adds another facet to the picture of the birth of Christ. c). Having been hidden for 3 months because he was a beautiful child he was then put in an ark made of bulrushes, daubed with asphalt and pitch, and placed in the reeds at the edge of the River Nile. And it is from here that he is seen by Pharaoh s daughter and taken into the royal house of Egypt to be her son. d). In this respect the one who God had chosen to deliver His people, who Pharaoh had tried to kill at birth by throwing the male babies in the river, became part of the royal household, hidden in plain sight. e). And then in anticipation of Herod s attempt to kill the Christ Child, what do we find? - Mt 2:13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him." 14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son." We find the child Jesus hidden in Egypt, which had been foreshadowed by the child Moses hidden in Pharaoh s house. 4). Ex 2:11 Now it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren and looked at their burdens. And he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 So he looked this way and that way, and when he saw no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 And when he went out the second day, behold, two Hebrew men were fighting, and he said to the one who did the wrong, "Why are you striking your companion?" 14 Then he said, "Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?" So Moses feared and said, "Surely this thing is known!" 15 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But THE THE WORD OF GOD PART 6D 7

Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well. There is virtually nothing said of Moses childhood in Pharaoh s house as there is virtually nothing said of Christ s childhood. Instead Exodus Chapter 2 jumps straight to those days, when Moses was grown and his going out to his brethren to look at their burdens. a). And the Lord gives us commentary on this through Stephen in the Book of Acts - Ac 7:22 "And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds. 23 "Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel. 24 "And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian. 25 "For he supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand. Remarkably, we see through these verses in Acts that Moses knew that his brethren would be delivered by his hand, even prior to the burning bush incident. And this would have to be the case because of the antitype. b). Moses, going to visit his brethren, the Children of Israel to look at their burdens forms a type for the first advent of the Lord - Ga 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, Moses went to his brothers when he was grown and Christ went to His brethren when the fullness of the time had come Moses forms the type and Christ is the antitype. c). As Moses supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, so Christ came to His brethren as their King to bring deliverance to them through repentance Moses forms the type and Christ is the antitype. d). And in both the type and the antitype the Children of Israel s response is the same, as it would have to be they did not understand Ex 2:14 Then he said, "Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Joh 1:11 He came to His own[things], and His own[people] did not receive Him. THE THE WORD OF GOD PART 6D 8

Joh 18:39 "But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" 40 Then they all cried again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber. And we will remember that the response of the Children of Israel to Moses and to Christ had already been set in an earlier foundational type seen through Joseph and his brothers - Ge 37:8 And his brothers said to him, "Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?" So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. Joseph forms the foundational type, Moses provides the same type with additional detail and Christ is the antitype. e). It is in the verse that follows Moses rejection by his brethren that his life is sought by Pharaoh, and he flees to Midian - Ex 2:15 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well. 16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. And it is following the Lord s rejection by His brethren that His life is sought Joh 19:14 Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!" 15 But they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar!" 16 Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led Him away. Moses is not killed by Pharaoh, but it is when Pharaoh seeks his life that he goes to Midian which pictures for us Christ s ascension into heaven following His crucifixion seen in the parable in - Lu 19:11 Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. 12 Therefore He said: "A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. We will continue with this next time if the Lord is willing. THE THE WORD OF GOD PART 6D 9
