4 WEEK CONTENT OVERVIEW Sunday, March 19, 2017 Volume 13; Week 4 Week 1: General Epistles (Part 1) Week 2: General Epistles (Part 2) Week 3: Revelation (Part 1) Week 4: Revelation (Part 2) LESSON OVERVIEW Today the children will learn about the final book of the Bible, Revelation, and will discuss how they can help bring God s kingdom to earth. VIDEO 1 SMALL GROUP 1 The purpose of this time is to build relationships with the children. It s important for children to feel welcomed and connected before engaging in active learning. Usually this activity is a simple game that encourages interaction. Take time to say each child s name and how glad you are to see each person! (Use the Shepherding Guide to make notes of what the children say during this time. Ask follow up questions next time you see the child at church.) VIDEO 2 SMALL GROUP 2 The purpose of this time is to introduce the day s lesson and review the previous lesson. Because this is a Biblical literacy curriculum, this segment is important for helping children build a cohesive understanding of the entire Bible. The questions and games are designed to provide repetition and reinforcement for helping children understand the Bible. VIDEO 3 SMALL GROUP 3 The purpose of this time is to teach the main content of the day s lesson. New information and the key lesson can be found during these activities. Provide children adequate time to process the new information. Feel free to skip questions, add questions or tweak the activities so that children are able to fully grasp the new stories and concepts. VIDEO 4 SMALL GROUP 4 The purpose of this time is to review the day s lesson. A Bible What s It? Game is always provided which includes review questions. Following the review questions, take time to encourage reflection. Ask open-ended questions that encourage children to apply the lesson specifically to their context. Consider making this a quiet time, followed by quiet prayer. Jellyfish One grants permission to churches, schools, and other licensees to edit What's in the Bible? PREPARATION Supplies: Video 2, Bibles, Blocks (Jenga, Lego, Building or Domino), Tree Question Cards, Crayons, Markers or Colored Pencils and Tape Teacher Note: After each question is answered, pass the tree to a child to decorate. Attach the tree to a block with tape, and have the children stand the trees up very close to one another (this will be important for the end of the activity). ACTIVITY PLAY: Video 2 SAY Let s continue to look at this tricky book -- Revelation. Today we learned the phrase, Can t see the forest for the trees. What do you think this phrase means? (Discuss with kids) SAY Let s work to build our very own forest. First, we will answer our question cards. Then, we can decorate each Tree Question Card with a symbol from Revelation, or a picture of something that stood out to us about the book of Revelation. Once we have all of the trees decorated, we can build our forest. QUESTIONS 1. The dragon is a symbol for whom? Answer: Satan 2. The two beasts and the dragon work together to try and hurt whom? Answer: God s People 3. When God decides it is time to end evil, what are the seven angels holding and what do those objects symbolize? Answer: Bowls and God s anger at evil 4. When a ruler comes with a sword in his mouth, it is a symbol for what ruler? Answer: The Messiah 5. Where are the enemies of God thrown? Answer: Into the lake of fire Jellyfish One grants permission to churches, schools, and other licensees to edit What's in the Bible? Church Edition materials to fit their requirements and needs. 6. Phil said that studying the book of Revelation is like studying a forest. If we focus too much on one symbol, it s like staring at one tree. We need to back up and look at the whole story. What is God trying to tell us? Answer: God is going to destroy evil and set things right. 7. True or False: After God destroys evil, John sees in his vision a new heaven and earth. They have been cleaned of evil - redeemed. It s the kingdom of God in full bloom! Answer: True 8. John sees a new Jerusalem coming down from the sky. How many miles long, wide and high was this new city? Answer: 1400 miles 9. This city is a perfect cube, covered in gold. It reminds us of the room in Solomon s Temple called the Holy of Holies. What does this tell us about this city? Answer: It is where God will live 10. We will live with God in this city. In the center of the city is God s throne, the river of life and what very special tree growing on either side? Answer: The tree of life SAY That is a beautiful picture. Let s close our eyes and imagine this beautiful city. SAY We have heard about many symbols from the book of Revelation. Take a minute and think about which symbol stood out to you and why. Take a Tree Card and draw that symbol. Then attach it to one of the blocks with tape. SAY Now that you have drawn your symbol, let s build a forest. As you place your tree in the forest, please tell the rest of the group why you chose that symbol. SAY Great job on building the forest. Now let s try to look at our forest a couple of ways. When we stand above it can we see all the trees? Let s try putting our face down so our eyes can only see the bottom of the trees. We may have to lower our faces to lie on the table or floor. Is it easier or harder to see the forest? Try it again both ways. SAY Let s remember this whenever we read the book of Revelation. We need to back up and look at the whole book so that one symbol doesn t confuse us too much. Jellyfish One grants permission to churches, schools, and other licensees to edit What's in the Bible?
