Kudos to all who provided the elegant decorations placed on each table, and the baked goods donated for the dessert table. We would also like to thank the Rectory Staff for providing the keys and support for the dinner and extend our gratitude to all that helped with set up and clean up. We really appreciate your dedication. Finally, we would like to congratulate our 50/50 Raffle winners: Loretta Turman and Eugene Slusarczyk. The success of the dinner can only happen when everyone works together as a team and our parish exemplified this last Saturday evening. With sincere thanks and God Bless St. Florian Parish. Page 4 St. Florian Parish 8 th Sunday In Ordinary Time St. Florian School Happenings... visit us at www.stflorianschool.org Lent: Burning of Palms Tuesday, March 4 th 8:15 am in the courtyard You may bring your old palms and place them in the basket in back of church. Please make sure there are no ribbons, rubber bands or plastic bags as we are not able to burn anything but the blessed palms. Mission Statement of St. Florian School Our mission is to provide each student with a Catholic education in all areas. The faculty and school families join the parish staff and fellow parishioners to form a living Catholic faith community. Our school population is multi-cultural and fosters sensitivity to the needs of all. We promote the students' burning desire for learning. Through education, service, support, formation and challenge, the students are called to realize their potential spiritually, socially, and intellectually. For one hundred years our school has been committed to carry out the Gospel values of Jesus Christ on a daily basis. Ch urch Regulati ons Regardi ng Fast & Absti nence Fasting: All the faithful in good health from ages 18 to 59 years fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by limiting themselves to one full meal each day. On such fasting days, they may also take two smaller meals, but nothing between meals. Abstinence: Catholics aged 1 4 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Repent Lent's Message from the Desert Once Jesus had successfully rejected the temptations of the devil, he immediately began to preach "repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matthew 4:1 7). To repent is to turn from sin toward God. True repentance includes both a rejection of sin and a willingness to change. The temptations Jesus faced are the same temptations each one of us must face: the immoral satisfaction of our needs and desires, the constant testing of God and idolatrous worship of power. Jesus calls us to change the way we try to satisfy our needs. Lenten disciplines help us to make that change: instead of seeking happiness by satisfying our every physical desire, we fast to show our reliance on God. Instead of seeking proof from God, we demonstrate our trust by giving alms to the needy. Finally, instead of relying on worldly power, we rely on the power of God through fervent prayer. Lenten discipline aims not so much to strip ourselves of the desire for the good things of the earth as to change our willingness to do almost anything to get them. As we grow more and more trusting in God, our lives come increasingly into harmony with the kingdom Jesus proclaimed, the kingdom that is our baptismal birthright. Elmwood Chapel Celebrates 25th Anniversary 1 989-201 4 Please join the Betkowski Family and Staff as we celebrate 25 years of serving the community. On March 22, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00pm you are invited to the Trinity Council Knights of Columbus Hall at 11 207 S. Ewing Avenue. Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served in appreciation for letting us serve the community for the past 25 years. Thank You.

Page 6 St. Florian Parish 8 th Sunday In Ordinary Time Raising Faith Filled Kids One Word at a Time Criando hijos creyentes una palabra a la vez Know I never knew my father. He was rarely around. I hear this often when I give talks to men. If the man seems open and willing, I ll ask, Do your children know you? It s a good question for all parents to ask. We can be so busy providing for our children s daily needs that we unintentionally withhold a lasting gift from them the gift of letting them know who we are, what matters to us, and what we stand for. An easy way to offer that gift is to tell stories from your past. Use prudence, of course, and be sure to relay stories that highlight God at work in your life. Telling meaningful stories from our past helps our children know us and feel grounded in the present and better prepared to face the future. Tom McGrath Saber Nunca conocí a mi padre. Casi nunca estuvo conmigo.
