WELCOME/INTRO: October Series: God Stories An invitation to live incredible stories with the God who still writes them. WI wedding- back to give this message * spiritually signi cant * heart for church unity * no snark * Holy Spirit not weird * Gods power and presence in your life SCRIPTURE HEAVY MESSAGE - New? Hang with us... Today I want to talk about the Holy Spirit Spectrum of beliefs on the Holy Spirit? [SCREENSHOT - Bellcurve] I have friends in probably ALL camps on this. We have people in this church in both camps - and may continue to.
We need to respect all people, not all ideas. MY GOAL TODAY IS SIMPLY TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING ON BEHALF OF GOD. (hahahahah!! no problem right! Joke.) MY REAL GOAL TODAY IS TO EXPLAIN WHAT I BELIEVE GOD HAS REVEALED TO ME KNOWING THERE MAYBE THINGS I DON T UNDERSTAND! Last week : Week #1 - We looked at the Holy Spirit - Who is He? (A person) Week #2 : We look at the Holy Spirit: The God who lives in us (*NOTE: Unity is the goal - not division) Explain my understanding of the di erent leans & try to speak to them. You probably nd yourself somewhere in here. CAMP/LEANING #1: NO MIRACULOUS 1. An attempt to overview their position (from my seat & friends) a. People have abused the Holy Spirit and been swept up into weird doctrines & activities that are NOT supported by the Bible - that this is concerning to them. (I agree) b. Miracles don t seem to happen as they do in the Bible i. Miracles passed with the Bible ii. God needed to utilize miraculous to establish the church but no longer needed c. Don t believe the Bible is literal word of God d. Feel that science doesn t allow for miracles e. Have a cerebral Western bent that doesn t incline them to engage things they can t readily, logically explain
f. Believe speaking in tongues is weird (satanic) 2. Thoughts on those positions a. Abuses? I agree with their concerns - i. The abuse of something doesn t invalidate its value when used properly ii. Don t throw the baby out with the bathwater. b. Miracles don t happen anymore? Miracles do happen. i. ILL. If there was a debate about the existence of The Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat and you see ONLY ONE - Debate OVER! They exist. ii. [SCREENSHOT - WOMBAT] iii. We can debate why they don t happen more readily in the US but they do happen. iv. They often happen more readily in other countries in more spiritual contexts. v. Bible says to pursue spiritual gifts (miraculous) (I Cor. 12) c. The Bible not literal? Bible is literal when it intends to be and not when it doesn t. i. Some scripture literal, some not ii. Many miracles intended literally: iii. Resurrection was intended to be literal. d. Science doesn t allow? is the wrong measurement for miracles. i. ILL. Like trying to measure the weight of water with a ruler. It is the wrong TOOL for the job. ii. Science explains what is & the laws that govern what is. iii. Miracles, by de nition, are an interjection that superseeds those natural laws ( supernatural ). iv. Science can t explain miracles because the measures by which science operate can t capture it. e. We have a cerebral bent in the west? Not the norm i. Maybe an anti-spiritual bent.
ii. We lean toward only what we can explain & see. iii. This is not the same as the rest of the world. iv. This is not the same as the text of the Bible. v. We need to understand we are not necessarily the norm in our approach to the spiritual. f. Tongues weird? All over the Bible - N.T. i. Bible says don t forbid to speak in tongues (1 Cor. 14:39) Camp #2: SECOND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED An attempt to overview their position (from my seat & friends) There are incredible experiences with the spirit of God available to us. (I agree) Believe two separate baptisms/experiences taught in scripture: That the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a distinct, separate, SECOND experience that not all believers have. That the Spirit is mysterious and can t be understood Constant discernment needed for everything Make everything super spiritual That the Spirit does whatever He wants no matter what is appropriate in a given moment Always a step o from what is appropriate in the moment Thoughts on those positions g. Incredible experiences? - I agree h. Two separate experiences? Misunderstanding of Text i. Not understanding that the Holy Spirit was showing up for the FIRST time in Acts & Gospels Acts & Gospels - Holy Spirit coming for rst time Transitional Books
People see the Holy Spirit showing up at a separate time to those who were already following Jesus - they decide two experiences Acts 19: 1-6 - While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? They answered, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. 3 So Paul asked, Then what baptism did you receive? John s baptism, they replied. 4 Paul said, John s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus. 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. A misunderstanding of the transitional nature of the book of Acts and the life of Jesus & His sending of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit WAS INDEED showing up for the rst time to believers but not because He come separate forever, only then (because He was coming for the rst time after the resurrection) John 7:37-39 - On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will ow from within them. 3 9 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glori ed.
ii. iii. Not making a distinction between tongues and the presence/baptism of the Holy Spirit In acts: Tongues were being used as a sign to signify the Holy Spirit was present In acts: God was disseminating the Gospel quickly to massive groups of people speaking di erent languages on pentecost (when HS shows up) Groups of people the Jews would have never expected to be saved were getting saved. Tongues was AN EVIDENCE that they were receiving the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit shows up when people aren t speaking in tongues. Nowhere in scripture is Baptism of Holy Spirit taught as a second experience for those who are born again believers of Jesus Christ. Many places in scripture teach that you receive the Holy Spirit upon salvation. Holy Spirit Baptism as (potential) second experience not present in N.T. letters after Acts. The Spirit is mysterious and can t be understood? I Cor. 2 - who can understand the mind of God except the spirit of God?... but we have the mind of Christ Last week: The Holy Spirit will reveal what Jesus said. The river of the Spirit ows through the banks of Scripture The Spirit is not appropriate? 1 Cor. 14: 32-33 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace...
Paraphrase: The Spirit of God is a gentleman Great Scott so what does the Bible says about the supernatural? 1.) You receive the Holy Spirit when you believe on Jesus Christ and He is power packed. a.) Eph. 1:3-4 - 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God s possession to the praise of his glory. b.)acts 2:38 - Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let everyone of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit c.) John 7:37-39 - On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will ow from within them. 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glori ed. d.) Presence of God left the temple & lives in you! 2.) You learn to follow & yield to the PERSON of the Holy Spirit as a process a.) John 14: 26-26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. b.) ILL. You get to know PEOPLE better OVER TIME!
3.) There are powerful second experiences with the Holy Spirit whom you already have (and 3rd, 4th & 278th) a.) Relational knowing does grow I might say after a weekend away with Ericka wow, I thought I knew her now I do. I knew her before, but I gained additional insight, revelation or experience I didn t have before. It is a second experience (or 3rd or 457th), but it isn t a (pentecostal doctrine) second experience with the Holy Spirit. b.) Many people don t understand the Holy Spirit when they receive Him so when they do begin to learn about Him, it feels like a distinct, separate experience. i.) These Experiences can be dramatic (1) MINE WAS! ii.) Theologically you have the Holy Spirit at salvation iii.) Baptism Immersion in the Holy Spirit can take place as you launch deeper into relationship with Him but you have as much of HIM as you are going to get at salvation - A PERSON DOESN T COME IN PIECES. c.) Tongues can be a second experience (not the same as HS baptism) i.) TONGUES? ii.) Two types of Tongues iii.) Tongues & Interpretation - A gift (1) Used in acts to get the Gospel to large group of people speaking di erent languages (2) God can still use a tongue & an interpretation (3) Listed as a spiritual gift (4) I don t have that one - or at least haven t had it that I know of. (5) Not everyone has this - it is a gift. (6) It is supernaturally given iv.) Tongues as a personal prayer language - All
(1) It is our spirit praying as the Holy Spirit gives us words: (a) 1 Cor. 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. (b)acts 2:4 - And they were all lled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (c) I Cor. 14:2 - For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them ; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. (d) I Corinthians 14:14-15 - For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. (e) Jude 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit v.) Tongues are weird (1) 1 Cor. 14: 39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. (2) 1 Cor. 14:18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. (3) 1 Cor. 14:5 - I would like every one of you to speak in tongues... (4) Few things are as well documented in scripture for New Testament Christians as speaking in tongues (a) Prophecy about it (b) Jesus alludes to it (c) The Disciples need it (d) Paul says don t forbid them!!!
(e) Paul says he uses them often & is thankful for them (f) Bible says it builds us up in faith (g) Bible says it gives thanks well (h) Bible says it is Holy Spirit assisted language (i) Bible has it listed in (i) Old Testament 1. (prophetic of coming) (ii) Gospels & Acts 1. (transitional) (iii) The New Testament Letters 1. (Cor., Jude, etc.) vi.) vii.) The relational growth between you and the holy spirit probably doesn t look the same as it doesn t for others (1) Run your race - let it be your process Stop trying to get something/someone you don t have (1) I M NOT TRYING TO GET MARRIED - I AM trying to GET TO KNOW ERICKA BETTER!!! 4.) We need the Holy Spirit desperately & need to pursue deeper relationship with Him a.) Galatians 5:22-25 - 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have cruci ed the esh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
b.) Romans 8:6 - T he mind governed by the esh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 5.) We are all invited a.) John 10:27 - My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. b.)what is the FINAL TAKEAWAY? c.) Everybody gets to play. - John Wimber, Power Evangelism We're on a journey together to learn more about the Person of the Holy Spirit.
