CHROMOTHERAPY Colour that heals Colours that help restore the body s true state of health! The joy of the sun that indicates new paths to us with its yellow colour, the force of blood that roots us and stimulates us with its red colour, blue which calms and soothes, purple which transforms... discover all these aspects of colour for a beneficial journey inside the human body! Chromotherapy is an alternative health practice that studies how colours influence life and health. The use of colours is normally decided according to common principles similar to those that lead to the choice of what colour clothes to wear or the shade of the walls in a house so that the colours match a certain personality type and foster or contrast certain moods. According to the principles of chromotherapy, colours help to restore the natural balance of the body and mind and have physical and psychological effects that can stimulate the body and alleviate certain symptoms. For a physicist, colour is measurable. It is a kind of light radiation with a specified energy and wavelength. For a physiologist, it is the effect of stimuli reaching our eye, to be transmitted to the brain as impressions - Maria Rzepinska, The motif of colour in the history of European painting - We can see how colour has been used throughout the ages in the healing practices of many cultures in the past. Records on the ancient Egyptians state that yellow was used to stimulate the intellectual capacities of the mind, while red was used to increase the life force. The Sumerians used colour to heal their sick. Colour has also always been essential for the Chinese. In fact, in the 5-element system that forms the foundation for all their ideology, each element is associated with a different colour. According to Ayurvedic tradition, the symbolism of colours is defined by the vibrational quality with which each colour vibrates in tune with the universe. Each single colour contains energy and force vibrations capable of producing good health. Ayurveda teaches that colours bring the sun s energy to us through the various elements in the atmosphere that split the rays and display the right colour to us. The atmosphere is a large prism that splits light and transmits it in the form of colour. Dr. Vasant Lad, in his book Chromotherapy for the treatment of the 5 senses, says, the seven basic colours, which are present in the rainbow, are associated with the body tissues and doshas. The 5 elements and they way these elements combine with the three doshas - vata, pitta and kapha - are at the origin of the core of Ayurvedic symbolism, which is why the actions of the seven colours vibrations are used to restore states of balance and health. It was the Tibetans, however, who were first to associate colour with consciousness in their oldest book on humanity. The colours of their tunics are by no means due to chance. If your mind is not clear, if you are insincere and unable to control yourself, you wear the yellow tunic in vain. If your mind is clear, if you are sincere and have self-control, you wear the yellow tunic well -Dhammapada- 3

The Colours The visible spectrum is the energy scale that starts with red and goes up to violet before disappearing out of our view. Colours communicate and are often sharper and more descriptive than words. Obviously, each colour does not have the same specific meaning in every culture in the world, but still that single colour acts on the individual organs according to a universal code. Let s take a look: RED Primary colour. The colour red, the colour of blood, is the colour with the deepest, strongest vibration. It is energy, life force, the energy of awakening, of being rooted in the ground. It represents the survival instinct and is therefore linked to the material side of life and passion for life itself. Red is that extra burst of energy and is received by the body very quickly. It helps to warm the body, like the red in fire. Fire is also the element that transforms things and thus red helps to change even the most latent moods and physical states. Physically, red serves to counter stagnation in the body, moving and giving it a boost of extra energy. It fights fatigue and apathy. It acts on the genitals, it is connected to strong emotions (such as anger) and strengthens the lower limbs. Cosmetically, it is mainly used for rough, lifeless, oedematous skin as well as for nodular cellulite (except when there is also an imbalance of the circulation). It makes the blood circulation more fluid and also facilitates a lipolytic effect (dissolves the fat mass). ORANGE-CORAL This colour is formed from red with a small quantity of yellow. Orange-coral represents the wisdom of loving both others and ourselves. It is a colour that draws the human being closer to his deepest perceptions, more rooted in his/her being. This colour, much used in the American Indian and ancient Persian traditions with the intention of bringing happiness and good fortune into the being, is associated with the deep connection between the conscious and unconscious. It therefore helps with the recognition of the individual processes that are unique to each individual. Orange-coral connects to deep insights, recognizing the true wisdom inherent in every being. ORANGE Orange is formed from red and yellow. It is the colour of creativity, of inspiration (hence the colour of Tibetan monks robes), of the deep insights that in common parlance are called feelings or gut reactions. It is the colour of awareness, of internalization, of bliss. The colour orange is of great help for letting go, not clinging to situations and burdensome and/ or painful memories, and allows the individual to regain a state of bliss and sense of humour. Physically, orange has an effective action on the large intestine and the body s deep elimination areas. Orange is the only colour that can balance the functions of the spleen. Since orange is an aggregating colour (it certainly isn t liked by people who prefer to be alone!), it helps us to enjoy the pleasures of life, from food to sexuality, from the awareness of personal growth to the desire to share with others. It is the colour that, energetically, connects or opens our eyes to recognize addictions and co-dependency. (Co-dependency is defined as a psychological condition or a relationship in which a person is controlled or manipulated by another who is suffering from a pathological condition - usually narcissism or drug addiction - and in broader terms, it refers to dependency on the needs or control of another person). In growing children, it facilitates the development of the network of relationships that form the basis of survival needs. Cosmetically, it is mainly used for greasy, oily, thickened skin. It acts on dull, discolored skin. It helps skin imperfections on the body (slack muscle tone, cellulite, excess fat) due to imbalances in the digestive processes or altered endocrine function. It promotes hair shine by acting on oily dandruff from sebaceous hypersecretion. 4

YELLOW-GOLD It is yellow with a small quantity of orange. Gold represents wisdom, achieving higher states of consciousness, knowledge and ancient knowledge. Just think of the symbolism of the colour gold used in religion to represent the higher conscience. It is the colour of the well-being on all levels that every single individual on the planet seeks. A common saying in Italy, the goose that lays the golden eggs, is used as a reference to total well-being. One of the oldest signs of humanity is turning lead or other base metals into gold. The wisdom of discernment is represented by the colour gold. Justice, purity, beauty, splendour, meditation, enlightenment. The deep joy of gold. On an emotional level, gold is associated with the ability to assess one s self deeply. Physically, gold encompasses the capabilities of both yellow and orange and acts directly on the stomach and digestive system. It helps to balance the nervous system, the spinal column and the intestines, and it has been noted that it is of valuable aid for skin problems such as slackness and collapse of the dermal structure with consequent premature aging. YELLOW Primary colour. Yellow is the colour of the sun, which gives light, warms us and shows us the way. On an emotional level, yellow is associated with joy and happiness. Returning to the theme of children s developmental growth mentioned in the description of the colour orange, yellow represents the emergence of the child beyond the stage of dependence and the flowering of the individual. It is the individual will or the ability to transform our own personal projects into action. It is a colour of paramount importance, especially in adolescence. Yellow helps all individuals to recognize, develop and achieve goals in life. It is the individual will or the ability to transform our own personal projects into action. Physically, yellow is directly related to the stomach, the nervous system, the mind and the intellect. The kidney area is also physically located in the area of the body considered yellow. This is important to understand because in traditional Chinese medicine, kidney energy is the foundation of life itself. Yellow activates the metabolic processes providing sufficient energy for the various organs to function in harmony. It is noticable that people who do not like the sunlight, yellow light, tend to be drained, apathetic, constantly tired and have little desire to move. Yellow, therefore, promotes physical activity, makes us overcome laziness and restores the joy of movement. Yellow also presides over the mental and physical development connected with the bones, marrow and clarity of thought, and enriches the short-term memory. It is therefore of great help to older people who tend to recall only the most distant memories. It acts directly to fortify the vision and help with eye problems. Prolonged exposure to yellow light is an excellent antidepressant remedy and an antidote to fear. Yellow is also related to the skin. Cosmetically, it is mainly used for oily, congested, mature, acne-prone skin and lymphatic congestion. Its action is restructuring, bio-revitalizing and especially antioxidant. With yellow, cell function improves and the skin gains in elasticity, freshness and beauty. Yellow activates the lymphatic system (lymph-drainage effect); purifies the liver, intestine and skin, and cleanses the blood. OLIVE GREEN This is formed from one part blue with two parts yellow. In colour therapy this colour is called women s leadership. It is associated with women s ability to lead the family, to guide groups of people, to unite workers, to do several things at the same time. Emotionally, olive green helps individuals to let go of the past without fear. Space (green) and wisdom (yellow) also mean finding new space and knowledge to live a new life of consciousness on earth. Olive green helps to purify, to bring light even to the oldest, stalest situations to then give rise to a profound renewal. According to the principles of English colour therapy, olive green is an antidote for the poisoning of the consciousness and for negative thoughts, renewing and deeply cleansing even the most oppressive mental states. Olive green is also the ability to transform spiritual levels and understanding in everyday life. It is the joy and ability to laugh at ourselves (yellow, the colour of joy, combined with green, the colour of space and truth). It helps bring clarity on the path to awareness. It is self-love. On a physical level, it acts on the large intestine and lungs and helps to relieve and soothe muscle cramps. 5

GREEN Green is formed from blue and yellow. It is the meeting of the blue sky with the yellow sun. Green is the expression of nature and of life on Earth. In Ayurvedic tradition, green is connected with the fourth chakra, the heart chakra, which is exactly halfway between the three lower and three higher centres and therefore connects and balances all the energies related to the sky and those related to the earth. Green is exactly halfway between the warm colours and the cool colours. It is the central point of the rainbow. That is why green brings balance and harmony, and is the point of meeting and transformation. It is the colour of the heart and the pure sentiments of the heart. It is the region of feeling, understanding and acceptance. It is also the ability to breathe new air, to fill the space of the lungs and provide space for our being. Often we may feel locked inside ourselves. Green opens the door to novelty, to the outside. It gives us ample space in which to move and renew ourselves. Where there is space there is also exchange... the breath going in and coming out of the body... giving and receiving... space to meet others, to go beyond the self, it is the search for Truth, going beyond the limit of the self. On the emotional level, it is the colour of acceptance and, if we learn to accept things just as they are, we can undergo transformation because when we do not fight or make pointless efforts to change things, those things and situations will tend to change by themselves without the need for unnecessary stubbornness and hardship. In everyday language we are often invited to follow your heart and this is no coincidence... It represents conceiving ideas, planning, creativity and inventiveness. It is green that binds us to personal creativity and imagination. It is the ability to look towards the future and the desire to realize ourselves as individuals, opening us to the search for ever higher goals for increased consciousness. It is the union between man and individual. At the physical level, the colour green is considered the chemical laboratory of the body thanks to its ability to transform. It permits psychological stability. It governs the blood and blood vessels and green is the truly essential element in the physical formation of blood (operating rooms are green...). The colour green, thanks to its effect on the blood vessels, is responsible for distributing the blood to all the peripheral regions of the human body. It regulates body perspiration. It is a constitutive element of muscles and tissues. It is active against premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, sagging skin, undernutrition, dehydration and discoloration. It acts on connective tissue weakness. Cosmetically, it is mainly used in sebum-balancing, oxygenating and hydrating treatments, particularly for dry, slack, shrivelled, wrinkled, old, aging, fragile and dehydrated skin lacking in oils. TURQUOISE Turquoise is formed from two parts blue and one part yellow. Turquoise is the colour of the creative communication of the heart, the communication of the sincere, true emotions of the being. It is the bringer of peace and balance. It is the colour linked to the playful dolphins and their individual responsibility in the context of the group. Turquoise is strongly linked to the symbolism of media communication - television and social media that quickly bring the outside world within us, raising awareness of the group, of society, of humanity. Computers and information. Technology allows each individual to speak, to communicate one to many, supporting the process through individual power and connections. Turquoise is the psychic world rooted in the heart and initiates clear vision. It encourages us to follow our emotions, to go with the flow. It connects us with our inner teacher. It is opening to idealism, to travelling further and further, to the meeting and mixing of cultures and peoples. It helps us express our emotions verbally. Physically, it connects with the heart, the throat (in voice emission), the thymus and the lungs. It relates to the upper neck and shoulders. BLUE Primary colour. It is the colour of sky and water. Its light is refreshing, calming, soothing, astringent. Blue means the infinite and the space of the sea; no limits, no boundaries. It is the colour of the freedom of individuals, the depth of silence and deep wisdom. It is a cold colour that gives us a sensation of peace; the peace that opens us up to all the understandings of the sky. Blue is peaceful interior and exterior communication. The mind is as peaceful as the cloudless sky, free of thoughts, 7 free of worry. The colour of the mind. It represents the psychic energy in the thought forms. It moves the Ego of 6

the individual, extending its area of orientation and bringing it into balance with the state of mind. The colour blue helps us distance ourselves from conditioning. It also helps introverted people to come out of states of isolation. It alleviates excitement, especially in the manic phase, and helps children sleep calmly at night. It calms dreams. It helps us free our emotions. It represents verbal communication, the throat and words (logos). It is creativity in the use of the voice, in speech and expression, and in singing. On the emotional level, it is the project. The divine plan. The will and issues of authority at all levels. On the physical level, it acts on the thyroid and parathyroid. Blue light calms inflammation of the skin and throat. It promotes the contraction of the arteries, veins and capillaries. The penetrating, soothing power of blue is, however, effective in all inflammatory disorders. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, facilitating all the voluntary and non-voluntary contractions of the human body. Cosmetically, it is mainly used for thin, couperose skin. It acts on tight, congested skin and dilated pores. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties; it soothes sunburn and redness caused by heat. It acts on wrinkles caused by stress and on facial features that show tension. It is also active on cellulite caused by stress, as well as in toning treatments for the face and body. ROYAL BLUE It is formed from blue with a touch of red. It is a colour with great cleansing power for the physical and mental circulatory system as it controls the psychic currents and thought forms of our being. Being a combination colour formed from the deep blue of devotion with the deepest traces of stabilising red, this frequency of colour combines great creative power with practicality. It is a colour that speeds up the radical transformations that can take place at any level of being. Royal blue represents mysticism in its most profound form. The colour of the sky that opens to reveal the deepest mysteries of the night sky. Love for mystery, for what is secret. It is the colour of insights beyond the physical level... that sixth sense that opens up to understanding and seeing beyond the rational plane and sphere. It is sensitivity. On the physical level, it has great soothing power and helps deep healing. VIOLET It is formed from red and blue in equal parts. It is the meeting of the blue of the sky with the red of the earth. It is the colour of healers. Those who are in purple are inspired by something high above but very closely connected to the ground (violet = red + blue). It is the colour of transformation, of transition. In Christian tradition we recite,...as in heaven, so on earth... in order to request materialization and concretization. Violet is the ideal purifier and also the purifier of ideals. Its high frequency of vibrations has a subduing effect on minds affected by mental turmoil as such minds are not able to grasp its substance. The colour violet stimulates intuitive or spiritual qualities. It is the colour of alchemists because it brings heaven to earth. It is deeply calming. Along with blue, it brings healing, facilitating transformation, transition and turning points. It also opens up to the spirit of service. It gives shape to projects born from intuition. On the physical level, it is a calming colour that slows down heart activity and stimulates and acts on the venous circulation. The colour violet enhances the activity of the spleen, as well as that of the lymphatic circulation. It facilitates the balance between sodium and potassium. It promotes bone development. It moderates the appetite. It is very effective for strengthening the scalp. Cosmetically, it is mainly used for skin with freckles, age spots and generalised oiliness. It is active on dermatoses in general. It is an excellent wound healer. It is good for feeling at home for those who move from town to town or are under the influence of jet lag. WHITE White is the combination of all the colours. It is pure light. Light is suffering and the understanding of suffering. It is the clear vision that goes beyond all things. It is supreme understanding. Light is pure clarity, absolute cleanliness. It is everything everywhere. It is the energy of the moon. The silver cord that connects us with the infinite. In colour therapy, white is indicated for people who need a lot of light and all the aspects of each colour since light contains them all. Contraindications None, unless there are serious problems linked to visual disturbances. Children There are no specific contraindications for children. It is recommended they be allowed to instinctively and intuitively choose how long they want to stay immersed in the light. 7
