Cha Phaolô Chu Trọng Phước, SDB In a deserted place one can find an oasis of the intimate life with God and others. At the end of my second year of studying theology in Jerusalem, I invited a fellow Salesian brother to go for a hike on Mount Arbel, which overlooks the eastern shore of the Lake of Genneseret where Jesus lived, taught, and walked on water. On this summer day standing on the windy and deserted mountain peak, our view encompasses the whole of the Sea of Galilee and the surrounding villages. I wondered aloud to my friend if Jesus had gone up to this mountain to be alone and to pray. Perhaps on this mountain, he summoned the Twelve to himself and, then, sent them forth to preach, to heal, and to drive out demons (cf. Mark 3:13-15). Indeed, the Twelve went down to the villages below, and they preached repentance to the people, cured the sick, and drove out demons from those who were possessed. Sitting on Mr. Arbel and looking down at the Lake of Tiberias, it is as if I could see Jesus inviting the Twelve to come away with him on a boat and went to a deserted place to rest: Pope s Intentions Pray that priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests. Cầu xin cho các linh mục mỏi mệt và cảm thấy cô đơn trong công việc mục vụ, tìm thấy niềm an ủi trong sự thân tình với Chúa và sự trợ giúp trong tình bạn của anh em linh mục khác. The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a

(Mark 6:30-32) After an intense year of study and ministry, perhaps the Spirit was summoning my friend and I to go up to this deserted mountain to be alone with Jesus and to deepen our friendship. Phêrô Hoàng Công Quốc Huy Maria Goretti Chu Hồng Hạnh Maria Ngô Duyên Matta Trần Samantha Giuse Trương Đăng Prayer Intentions Now 3 years later as a newly ordained Salesian priest, I work in an all-boys Catholic high school. There is much joy in ministering to over 800 boys, but the work can seem endless: teaching in the classroom, organizing class retreats and confessions, celebrating school and parish Masses, running intramural sports and social activities, chaperoning mission and cultural trips, cheering for our boys at their games, planning for the next events and trips One must keep a good balance of work and rest, but fatigue is always close at hand. Perhaps a spiritual energy drink is needed to keep me going Jesus, give me this drink! (cf. Jn 4:7) At times, the life of a shepherd can be lonely when work takes priority over personal relationships. At times, the thirst for intimacy and friendship can be insatiable Jesus, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty! (Jn 4:15) Living in a community of priests and brothers helps one to fulfill this thirst. The life of common prayers, meals, and recreations can be refreshing and rejuvenating to one s tired body and burdened spirit. Community life has many blessings and some sacrifices as does any family. As a family, we don t choose our own brothers or sisters but, through our parents, God give them to us as precious gifts and helps on our life journey. Through our brothers and sisters, we can experience God s love and, thus, are called to love them as He loves us. So likewise in a religious community, God gives us brothers to love and to care for. In a community oriented toward one common work like a Salesian school, each member of the community fulfills his respective role and be a witness to the true spirit of teamwork so that our mission to young people may be fruitful. Diocesan priests who live alone in their rectories are challenged to build a family spirit within their parish community while finding fellow priests in whom they can confide and trust. We pray for the soul of Têrêsa Hồ Thị Nở, our General Chaplain's mother, who was called to her Father's House. Eternal Father, let Your perpetual light shine upon the soul of Têrêsa. May the soul of Têrêsa, your faithful servant, through Your mercy, rest in peace. Amen! All members are invited to say 10 Hail Mary with special intention for the soul of Têrêsa from June 30 th July 8 th Our deepest condolence to you Cha Bình Nguyễn, SVD. We also pray for safe travels for CTM Chị Matta Trần Samantha who will represent MĐB at the Joshua Congress. Like the rest of humanity, a priest desires to be happy and loved. As a human being he has his weaknesses and sins too. In this climate of scandals, many priests are prejudiced because of the failings of a few. Pray for priests so that they may remain faithful and joyful always. Support a priest by your kind words and thoughtful deeds. Promote the brotherhood of priests by refraining from gossiping about priests or comparing one priest to another. Share in their joys and sorrows as they
MĐB MANA Issue 100 3 share in yours. The priest accompanies people in their triumphs and trials, successes and failures, joys and sorrows. Every day his hands consecrate the bread and wine so that they may become the Body and Blood of Christ that is broken and shared for our daily needs. At one moment, he rejoices on the altar with the newly wedded couple, at another he baptizes their newborn child. He blesses people in their new houses and new cars. In the confessional, he absolves them of their sins. In the hospital, he anoints those who are sick. At the funeral Mass, he celebrates the life of the deceased and consoles those mourning the loss of loved ones. The priest is present to people from the beginning to the end of life. He does all these in persona Christi so that people may experience the loving presence of God in their lives and so be converted and conformed to Christ. The priest does not go to Heaven alone, but he brings with him the souls of those he saves. As Pope Francis calls us to pray for priests this month: That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests. Let us show our love for priests by praying for and honoring them. They are spiritual fathers to all the faithful. Listen to them as you would to a beloved father. Let the wisdom of God in Sirach be your guide: Children, listen to me, your father; act accordingly, that you may be safe. For the Lord sets a father in honor over his children and confirms a mother s authority over her sons. Those who honor their father atone for sins; they store up riches who respect their mother. Those who honor their father will have joy in their own children, and when they pray they are heard. Those who fear the Lord honor their father, and serve their parents as masters. In word and deed honor your father that all blessings may come to you. A father s blessing gives a person firm roots, but a mother s curse uproots the growing plant. Do not glory in your father s disgrace, for that is no glory to you! A father s glory is glory also for oneself; they multiply sin who demean their mother. My son, be steadfast in honoring your father, do not grieve him as long as he lives. Even if his mind fails, be considerate of him; do not revile him because you are in your prime. Kindness to a father will not be forgotten; it will serve as a sin offering it will take lasting root. In time of trouble it will be recalled to your advantage, like warmth upon frost it will melt away your sins. Those who neglect their father are like blasphemers; those who provoke their mother are accursed by their Creator. (Sirach 3:1-16).
