St. Mary on the Hill May 29, 2016 Happy Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (also known as Corpus Christi) and Memorial Day weekend! I honestly feel a little intimated, or unworthy, in getting to introduce myself on a weekend in which we celebrate such an important liturgical feast and national holiday. It s during this weekend in which at Mass today we celebrate the joy of the institution of the Eucharist and Jesus Christ s true presence within it, but it s also during this weekend in which we take time to reflect on how grateful we are to the men and woman who ve sacrificed their lives in defense of our country. As someone who very much loves the Eucharist and has spent some time in the Military, I can somewhat personally relate to the occasion and will do my best to keep my bio pertinent and brief! Seminarian Will Cook s Corner I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where my parents still live, and I have one younger brother who currently resides in Atlanta. I grew up Catholic, and while I received all the Sacraments of Initiation at the right time, I didn t really begin to take my faith seriously until I was a junior in college. It was in 2009 that I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor s degree in Construction Management Technology, but it was in the years prior in which I felt a desire to serve in the United States Marine Corps. It was in going to Officer Candidate School that I really began, or was essentially forced to personally mature, and with that my spiritual life grew also and became a major priority in my life. After graduation and commissioning as a Marine, I spent the majority of my time in Okinawa, Japan, and finished up my four-year commission in Albany, Georgia. It was in Albany that I fell in love with Georgia, particularly with Savannah, and vowed to eventually return in order to settle here. After leaving the Marine Corps, I spent a year as a Missionary with the Salesian Organization, Volunteers in Discernment, Education, and Solidarity (VIDES), something that I d been wanting to do for a while. It was during this time in which I found myself living, working, and worshiping with a community of Salesian priests and brothers, and furthermore, this was the first time in my life in which I felt a strong calling to Holy Orders. The charism of the community was in teaching vocational skills to underprivileged youth, and so as I worked with the priests in assisting to teach catechism throughout their school, I noticed how incredibly fulfilling it felt to help the kids see and share in God s love and to see them really grow in their faith. It was in this experience of working with the kids that I felt a greater sense of fulfillment than in anything else I had ever done, including being a Marine. As I returned from my mission trip and began working for a construction company in Savannah, I found myself reflecting a lot on my trip, and thinking about what it was that God was really calling me to do. After a continued period of discernment, I finally decided that going to seminary was where I was supposed to be. And so here I am, I ve just finished my first year, it was great, and I feel absolutely privileged to be able to spend my summer here in Augusta at St. Mary on the Hill! I m blessed and thrilled! One of the projects that I will be working on throughout the summer will be to put together a small consolidated directory of all the groups that are, or would like to be affiliated with St. Mary on the Hill. At this point, there seems to be many different groups associate with the parish and we d like to make sure that we have a listing of them all, so as to better facilitate their needs. So, if you re a group organizer/leader/captain and if you can spare a few minutes to send me a brief email (to will.c.cook@gmail.com) with the following information, it would be a huge help! The information we re looking for is: - Leadership and contact information - Intent or mission of the group - If group is open or closed to new members - The times and location of the meetings - If pastoral assistance is desired - And if there s anything else that might be of some help, please feel free to include it I m really grateful for all your help and participation, and furthermore, I m really looking forward to getting to meet, talk, and worship with all of y all this summer! God Bless! On the Way Home: The greatest love story of all time is contained in a tiny white Host. - Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen When we go before the Blessed Sacrament, let us open our heart; our good God will open His. We shall go to Him; He will come to us; the one to ask, the other to receive. It will be like a breath from one to the other, - St. John Vianney We believe that the bread and wine offered at Holy Mass become truly the body and blood of the Lord. This means that it is not only a memory of our Lord Jesus, but a making present of His saving actions and of His very person. At the Last Supper Jesus gave himself to us, knowing that he would give his life for love of us on the cross. Every time we receive Communion Jesus gives himself to us once again. How does it feel to know that you are participating in the action of Jesus that began at the Last Supper and still continues today? What did you talk to Jesus about today when he came to you in Holy Communion?

Several local Council of Catholic Woman (CCW) chapters are working in conjunction with the NCCW to help save the lives of these vulnerable American children trapped in the scourge of slavery. Children here, in our parish area, are being trafficked! This horrific practice can include prostitution, pornography, domestic servitude, factory work, migrant farming and mining. Please join us in fighting this crime by joining our volunteer group. We have developed a diocesan-wide committee using the internet and go-tomeeting to inform leaders in the parishes at a distance about the reality of human trafficking and how we can work to end it.
