THE CORNER DEC 10 2017 Second Week of Advent and the Pilgrimage to Rome During this second week of Advent, let us pray to open our hearts to those in need. This Tuesday, at the 9 AM Mass, we will have a procession of flowers to Our Lady of Guadalupe. It will be a time of prayer and solidarity with the families of immigrants. The Church is there for them, and we want them to feel welcome. As many of you know, I and Cody Egner, Regional Director of Religious Education, took 30 people on a pilgrimage to Rome. It was a primer for the Advent season like none other. While one can speak endlessly of the beauty of the hundreds of churches located in Rome, I think what inspired me most about them was why they were built, for whom they are dedicated, and the faithful who made these glorious temples so magnificent. One particular stop we made was the Holy Steps. This was the staircase leading (at one time) to the praetorium, the residence of Pilate. The 28 marble steps, now covered in wood, were the stairs Christ climbed before his passion. The stairs along with remnants of the true cross and the inscription that was above the Lord s head were brought to Rome by St. Helena. Pilgrims climb these steps on their knees, contemplating the atoning sacrifice and death of our Lord. Amen? Amen! ALTAR GU ILD SCHEDU LE FOR THE WEEK OF DEC. 11-17 MONDAY 9 AM C. EASTSIDE FAITH Credo (I Believe) What is the liturgical year (the Church year)? The liturgical year, or the Church year, superimposes the mysteries of the life of Christ from his Incarnation to his second coming in glory on the normal course of the year. The liturgical year begins with Advent, the time of waiting for the Lord, and has its first high point in the Christmas season and its second, even greater climax, in the celebration of the redemptive suffering, death, and Resurrection of Christ at Easter. The Easter season ends with the feast of Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Church. The liturgical year is repeatedly interrupted by feasts of Mary and the saints, in which the Church praises God s grace, which has led mankind to salvation. A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams MARK 1:1-8 Make straight the paths of the Lord. 4 Hearing these lines that open Mark s Gospel offers us a chance to consider what it is that Jesus is coming to accomplish. Why would God become man? That is the question of the day. Christ came as an infant 2,000 years ago, and he will come again at the end of time. Thus, everything becomes wrapped up in the mystery of God s love for us sinners. He wants to restore us to grace, to welcome us into his life, and to lead us to the eternal happiness of freedom from sin and death. When we sin we turn away from God s love, either in little ways that sometimes we hardly notice or in more significant ways. In any case our relationship with God suffers; we block the path of the Lord. If we know that our human relationships, which are built on our imperfect human love, suffer when we fail to love others, how much more does our relationship with God suffer when we fail to accept his perfect, divine love. What an opportunity we have today to find those ways in which we can make straight the path of the Lord! May the Lord give us the courage to humbly recognize our sins and to approach him with confidence and trust for forgiveness and reconciliation, for strength and growth. Love your faith even more. Sacred Heart Radio. 89.5 FM & 740 AM Dominica Two months post-hurricane, the sad news from Dominica, home of St. Anthony s twinning parish, is that progress is slow in their post-hurricane recovery. Citizens remain at the mercy of aid from other countries for food and water. Twenty-six persons are confirmed dead and 32 persons are still missing. The dire conditions have prompted an exodus of 20% of the population, most of them young adults. They leave on boats for other islands and it is not known whether they will ever return. Because most houses were demolished by the storm, building materials and tools are desperately needed to rebuild. We are currently working on a plan to provide our friends with concrete resources to help them in their efforts to rebuild. An announcement will be made in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please continue to pray for Dominica and all those who have sufffered devastating losses in the region. Becoming Catholic. Seeking faith? Curious about the Church? Want to learn more? Call us today at 513-871-5757, ext. 215.

S PASTOR S RAMBLINGS I wanted to share some photos of our pilgrimage to Rome. It was such a wonderful trip. I feel like the whole group was able to appreciate the beauty of Rome and to renew the gift of faith. It was a wonderful spiritual experience for me, especially getting to celebrate the Mass in so many amazing churches. - Fr. Jamie Photos courtesy of Egner Photography and Stephen Sullivan 6

DEC 10 PA R I S H N E W S & N O T E S 2017 Prayer Intentions for the Week We pray that Joe Yankey may receive God s loving and healing graces. Contact Barb Browarsky at the parish office, (513) 8715757, ext. 202, with Mass and sanctuary devotional candle intention requests. All requests are honored for two weeks with the individual s or family s approval. Why I Give My name is Adam Frazier. My wife, Maria, and I have been parishioners for over three years and celebrated the Sacrament of Matrimony here in June 2016. While sitting in the pew during the Finance Commission s presentation, I too reflected on how my wife and I respond to the Church s call for stewardship. I lend my talent by serving on the Worship Commission and helping with the Altar Guild. Maria and I give our time by volunteering at the festival and delivering Thanksgiving meals. Finally, we contribute financially to the parish. Everything on this world belongs to God. He simply asks us to return to Him the first fruits of our labor to support His Church on earth. We choose to give to the Church electronically, and this reinforces for us the first fruits mentality the first transaction from our bank account each week is our tithe to St. Cecilia. We were both taught by our respective parents that contributing to the Church is not only an obligation found in the Catechism but our duty as Catholics. We bear this obligation joyfully because we believe in the importance of keeping St. Cecilia s doors open. The only reason St. Cecilia is here today is because of the generosity of those who have gone before us, and now it is our contributions that will help secure the future of our parish, our school, and our community outreach programs. Our beautiful St. Cecilia Church looks its best when in full decoration for special occasions such as Christmas. You may send in a donation to remember a loved one, honor someone special or simply help make the church more beautiful for this special season. With each $10 request, please include the donor s name and the honored person s name. Place the request in the specially marked envelope you received in the mail. There are also envelopes in the pews and at the doors. You may drop your envelope in the collection basket or mail it to the parish office. You can also make your donation through online giving on our website, and separately provide the donor s and honoree s name as noted above, along with a note that you 11 donated online. The list of those remembered or honored will be published in an upcoming bulletin. Please Patronize Our Advertisers To Place An Ad, Call 1-800-292-9020. Attorney at Law Stay out of the Tank!
