SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT Prepare the Way December 9 & 10, 2017 5:00pm & 8:00am AS WE GATHER Christmas is fast approaching. Are you ready? This time of year, our to-do lists grow in length: decorations, food, gifts, shopping, parties, and more. As we check each item off the list, we convince ourselves that we are more prepared to celebrate Christmas. Today, however, we encounter John the Baptizer in the Gospel. John calls us to prepare for our Savior s coming in a different way, a more significant way. John calls us to repent. Repentance is more than just something to check off our to-do list. It s a change of heart that the Holy Spirit brings about. Look to the Lord this Advent for the repentance and forgiveness He gives as we prepare for His Son s coming. That s how to be truly ready for Christmas. PRE-SERVICE BELL ANTHEM (5:00) Rejoice, Rejoice Believers WELCOME But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. (Galatians 4:4-5, ESV) HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #347 Comfort, Comfort Ye My People 1 continued Comfort, comfort ye My people, Speak ye peace, thus saith our God; Comfort those who sit in darkness, Mourning nearth their sorrows load. Speak ye to Jerusalem Of the peace that waits for them; Tell her that her sins I cover And her warfare now is over. Yea, her sins our God will pardon, Blotting out each dark misdeed; All that well deserved His anger He no more will see or heed. She hath suffered many a day, Now her griefs have passed away; God will change her pining sadness Into ever-springing gladness. Hark, the herald s voice is crying In the desert far and near, Calling sinners to repentance, Since the Kingdom now is here. O that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God away; Let the valleys rise to meet Him and the hills bow down to greet Him. Make ye straight what long was crooked; Make the rougher places plain. Let your hearts be true and humble, As befits His holy reign. For the glory of the Lord Now o er earth is shed abroad, And all flesh shall see the token That His Word is never broken. OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: The grass withers, People: the flower fades, All: but the word of our God will stand forever. LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLE Pastor: Jesus Christ is the Light of the world, People: the light no darkness can overcome. Pastor: Let your light scatter the darkness People: and illumine your Church. HYMN We Light the Advent Candle We light the Advent candle And wait for Christ to come. With hope, we trust the promise That He will bring us home. Our hope is in our Savior Who wins for us God s favor. We wait with growing light Till God makes all things right! We light the Advent candle And thank the Lord for rest. With peace, we know our Jesus Has come to be our guest. This peace beyond all knowing Within our hearts is glowing. We wait with growing light Till God makes all things right! Text: Lisa M. Clark. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Pastor: Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and His arm rules for Him; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him. Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. People: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. Pastor: He will tend His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs in His arms; He will carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. O Lord, the daily pressures and demands of this world are great; People: grant that we would daily repent of our sin and look to Christ, the Lamb of God, for forgiveness; Pastor: through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 40:1 11 ( Comfort, comfort My people. ) Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries: In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. A voice says, Cry! And I said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God! Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. BELL ANTHEM (5:00) What Child Is This? EPISTLE 2 Peter 3:8 14 ( The day of the Lord will come like a thief. ) But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 3 4

GOSPEL VERSE Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, Born to set Thy people free; From our fears and sins release us; Let us find our rest in Thee. Israel s strength and consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art, Dear desire of ev ry nation, Joy of ev ry longing heart. Text: Charles Wesley, 1707 88, alt. Public domain HOLY GOSPEL Mark 1:1 8 (John begins baptizing and preaching.) The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #344 On Jordan s Bank the Baptist s Cry Rise last stanza On Jordan s bank the Baptist s cry Announces that the Lord is nigh; Awake and hearken, for he brings Glad tidings of the King of kings! Then cleansed be every life from sin; Make straight the way for God within, And let us all our hearts prepare For Christ to come and enter there. We hail Thee as our Savior, Lord, Our refuge and our great reward; Without Thy grace we waste away Like flowers that wither and decay. Lay on the sick Thy healing hand And make the fallen strong to stand; Show us the glory of Thy face Till beauty springs in every place. All praise, eternal Son, to Thee Whose advent sets Thy people free, Whom with the Father we adore And Holy Spirit evermore. SERMON 5 A Voice in the Wilderness Mark 1:1-15 NICENE CREED (Be Seated) OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. You may check the register to see the names of those to greet after the service. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Lord, you sent John the Baptist as your messenger to preach the coming of your Son. People: Continue to send pastors to your Church who will be heralds of good news, faithfully calling people to repentance, proclaiming the Gospel and administering Baptism for the remission of sins. Pastor: Lord, you are patient and do not want anyone to perish. We give you thanks that in your great mercy, you continue to allow the Gospel to go forth so that all might reach repentance and faith. People: Help us to live lives worthy of your call, and keep us ever faithful as we wait for the new heavens and the new earth you have promised. Pastor: Lord, you are the God of all comfort. Look favorably upon all who suffer from physical infirmity and difficulties in life, especially Pat, Cliff, Dee, Dan, Doris, Judy, Manley, Jerry, Debbie, Pat, Charles, Ruth, Shirley, Gladys, Herb, Matthew, Russ, Arlene, Dorothy, John, Arlene, LuEva, Jean, Jack, Shirley, Jonathan, Helen, Leonard, and Sarah. People: Grant them healing and patience in the face of affliction and difficulty, and never let them forget that you are with them always. Pastor: Lord, you are the author of life and so we give you thanks and praise for all the blessings of life, joining especially with the Graf family as they celebrate Erika s 13th birthday and the Baxter family as Samantha celebrates her 18th birthday. People: Bless our hearts that we may see life as a precious gift from you and treasure the loved ones you place into our lives. Pastor: Lord, you invite us again to your table today, that we might receive the medicine of immortality in the body and blood of your Son. 6

People: May we receive the Sacrament rightly, so that with faith strengthened and sins forgiven our lives might be lived in holiness and godliness. Pastor: Lord, as we look forward to the celebration of Christmas, help us to keep our eyes focused on the miracle of the virgin birth of your only begotten Son. People: Grant us to enjoy the coming celebration of Christmas with our loved ones, but especially strengthen our faith in the Christ and grant us to follow Him all our days. Pastor: Lord, comfort all who grieve in these days, especially Maxine Yanke and family upon the passing of Ervin. People: Grant us all hope and peace in Christ and help us always to look forward in faith to the resurrection and the reunion with loved ones in the life to come. Pastor: Lord, as we in the Church on earth wait for the coming of your Son, we remember all the saints who have gone before us and now rest in your presence. People: Keep us all safe in your arms until that day when you will gather all your people to that place where righteousness dwells. Pastor: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE LORD S PRAYER THE WORDS OF OUR LORD SACRAMENT THE PEACE OF THE LORD Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. HYMN #621 Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Let all mortal flesh keep silence And with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly-minded, For with blessing in His hand Christ our God to earth descending Comes our homage to demand. King of kings yet born of Mary, As of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords in human vesture, In the body and the blood, He will give to all the faithful His own self for heav nly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven Spreads its vanguard on the way As the Light of Light, descending From the realms of endless day, Comes the pow rs of hell to vanquish As the darkness clears a way. At His feet the six-winged seraph, Cherubim with sleepless eye, Veil their faces to the presence As with ceaseless voice they cry: Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, Lord Most High! COMMON DISMISSAL POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Pastor: Let us pray. We give thanks to you, almighty God, that not only do you call us to repentance, but you also give us the gifts of repentance and forgiveness that we might live as your redeemed people; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICTION Pastor: The grass withers, People: the flower fades, All: but the word of our God will stand forever. Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. 9 CLOSING HYMN #515 Rejoice, Rejoice, Believers Rejoice, rejoice, believers, And let your lights appear; The evening is advancing, And darker night is near. The Bridegroom is arising And soon is drawing nigh. Up, pray and watch and wrestle; At midnight comes the cry. The watchers on the mountain Proclaim the Bridegroom near; Go forth as He approaches With alleluias clear. The marriage feast is waiting; The gates wide open stand. Arise, O heirs of glory; The Bridegroom is at hand. The saints, who here in patience Their cross and suff rings bore, Shall live and reign forever When sorrow is no more. Around the throne of glory The Lamb they shall behold; In triumph cast before Him Their diadems of gold. Our hope and expectation, O Jesus, now appear; Arise, O Sun so longed for, O er this benighted sphere.
