Page Two June 17, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Fund for Diocesan Infirmed and Elderly Priests There will be a special collection taken this weekend, Father s Day, June 16-17, at all Masses, to care for our infirmed and senior priests. The Fund for Diocesan Infirmed and Elderly Priests is a special way for the people of the Diocese of Joliet to express their concern for the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives in service to our pastoral care. The money in this fund goes toward priests who need help with extraordinary medical expenses or suffer a catastrophic illness. It also provides for the care of the St. John Vianney Villa, home to several senior priests in the Diocese of Joliet. Prayerfully consider making a donation to help our aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done in exemplifying Christ s mercy, through their spiritual guidance and celebration of the sacraments. On behalf of all the active and senior priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your generous support of this collection. Please be assured of my prayers for you. Friday office hours are from 9:00 am- 12 Noon. This schedule will continue through Labor Day. NEWS FROM THE P.I.T. PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney Who, where, and/or what do we turn to in troubled times? It is an important question to ask ourselves honestly. e know what the answer should be! W We should turn to the Lord. We should find shelter and protection in the Church in times of difficulty. We should have the freedom to open the Scriptures to find peace. But what do we actually do? Some of us will throw ourselves into broken relationships, hoping to find even a drop of fulfillment. Some turn to work, like Martha in the Scriptures; hoping that their productivity is a sign of their own personal worth. Other s will turn to power and pleasure, like King Herod, hoping to numb our emptiness and unsatisfied longing. I m sure we could come up with an endless list Our readings for this weekend, once again points us back to the right answers to our original question. n our second reading, St. Paul points us to I where are heart belongs; with the Lord! It s in the first reading and the parable of the mustard seed in the Gospel, that we come to understand the meaning of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven, the Church, is meant to be a home for all of us. Like a tree that brings shade on a burning hot day, or a shelter from the storms of life, or a defense of branches to prevent being taken by lurking predators. The Church is meant to be that tree! So again, we might need to ask of ourselves this question and answer it honestly: Where do we turn in troubled times? And if it s not the Lord and his Church, in humility let us once again ask the Lord to bring a conversion of our hearts.

Page Four June 17, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORIDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD June 17, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: BY GOD S GRACE AND WILL We can cooperate and advance the coming of the reign of God on earth, but we can never bring it about on our own. It will happen only through God s grace and will. FIRST READING I have lifted high the lowly tree (Ezekiel 17:22-24). God regulates what will and will not prosper. God will bring down the mighty and arrogant and will lift up the lowly and humble. In Ezekiel s day, the mighty and arrogant were represented both by those who refused to repent their evil ways in Judah and by the nation of Babylon, which had conquered the kingdom of Judah and exiled its leading citizens. SECOND READING Whether we are at home or away, we aspire to please the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-10). Life in this world is good, but this is not our ultimate home. God created us so that we might share in his glory in heaven. It is important to keep this in mind, for if we live only in and for this world, then we are bound to fall into patterns of behavior that are selfish and even selfdestructive. If, however, we keep our minds on eternity, then we will be able to live lives that are filled with the fruits of the Spirit. Every once in a while it is good to remind ourselves that we will someday face a final judgment for what we did in this life. GOSPEL It is the smallest of all seeds, and becomes the largest of plants (Mark 4:26-34). Jesus would use examples of agricultural imagery from everyday life because many of his listeners were farmers. Jesus speaks about the mystery of the seed s growth. The farmer might plant the seed, but God causes it to grow. We might preach the Word of God to others, but it is God who causes faith to grow in their hearts. Faith is a gift from God to which we respond. We can pray to receive greater faith, but God gives us faith when and how it is most useful for us. The second parable reminds us that the kingdom of God often begins in small, almost insignificant ways i.e., witness small miracles of grace when one person forgives another; when a person dies to self to serve others; when a person rejects temptation to live in God s grace. REFLECTION There is a persistent temptation among Christians to think that the kingdom of God that reality for which we pray in the Lord s Prayer, when we ask that God s will be done on earth as in heaven is something that we bring about by our own efforts. In part this is a temptation because in thinking this we do not give Christ his due as the One who makes God s Kingdom present. But it is a temptation also because the kingdoms that we strive to create often reflect our own values and agendas more than they do God s. Whether one is liberal or conservative or something else, we tend to imagine that God s will being done on earth would look a lot like what we and our like-minded friends would like to see happen. But the parables of the Kingdom in this Gospel, comparing it to grain sown in a field and the mustard seed that surprisingly grows into a great plant, seem to emphasize that the Kingdom arrives not through our efforts but by God s grace. As God says to the prophet Ezekiel: As I, the Lord, have spoken, so will I do. It is God who brings about the growth of the promised kingdom in our midst, and God does this by means that we cannot imagine in advance. Jesus emphasizes repeatedly that the arrival of the Kingdom will be a surprise. At the same time, as Paul in his Second Letter to the Corinthians reminds us, we will be judged for what we did in the body i.e., in this life. So in some sense our actions, while not the cause of God s Kingdom, do still matter in the coming of the Kingdom. Our actions in this life do sow the seeds of the Kingdom. Moreover, the hidden and surprising growth of the Kingdom is something that we must attentively wait for, so that we will be ready, like the man in Jesus parable, to wield the sickle when the time for harvesting comes. Page Six June 17, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church 21st Anniversary of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist O N SUNDAY, JUNE 3, 2018, THE SOLEMNITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI (THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST), Rev. Greg Skowron celebrated Holy Mass at Visitation Church. This day was extra special for Visitation Parish because it also marked the 21st Anniversary of the Perpetual Adoration of Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist Adoration Chapel. After Holy Mass, the congregation processed with Fr. Greg Skowron, Fr. Michael Kearney, Deacon Jim Eaker, and Deacon Michael O Ryan to the four altars surrounding the Visitation campus. It was a heavenly picture-perfect sunny, blue sky day. Warm breezes surrounded the faithful as they walked along the streets of Elmhurst with Jesus, giving public witness of their faith and devotion to Him in the Eucharist. A canopy carried by the Knights of Columbus covered our beloved Lord throughout the procession. The procession ended with the Reposition of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel. T HE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY, is a yearly celebration, but you can be with Jesus 365 days a year in the Adoration Chapel. Don t delay; visit and celebrate His True Presence in the Holy Eucharist today. It will prove to be the best part of your day!

God took the strength of a mountain, the majesty of a tree, the warmth of a summer sun, the calm of a quiet sea, the generous soul of nature, the comforting arm of night, the wisdom of the ages the power of the eagle s flight, the joy of a morning in spring, the faith of a mustard seed, the patience of eternity, the depth of a family need. Then God combined these qualities, when there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, and so, He called him Dad. Author Unknown Happy Father s Day!
