What does it mean to be close to God's kingdom? In today's Gospel, Jesus is in a dialogue with teachers of the law. They know well the Law of Moses, with its complex codes, expectations, and punishments. What will Jesus say? "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength... You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus effortlessly distills all the books of law into two commands. The simplicity of the Gospel message doesn't mean it's easy to follow. Far from it! The simplicity of the Gospel indicates its totality. Anything that requires the passions of our heart, the choice of our soul, the reason in our mind, or the strength of our body - all of this ought to be animated by love. As you can imagine, that means pretty much everything! The love of God and love of neighbor is meant to flow into our entire lives. The Gospel can appear complicated because life is complicated. Not every outcast is easy to love. We lack the knowledge or compassion to heal everyone who suffers. Personal sacrifice is not always noticed or valued. In the face of the unknown, fear can be easier than faith. Life's circumstances can seem like obstacles to God's love, not opportunities. And yet Jesus' command still stands. As you reflect this week, examine those areas where it's easy to love. Thank God for them! But take some time to consider the people and circumstances that challenge you. Ask God to show you what it means to love there. How is He inviting you to enlarge your heart, strengthen your soul, open your mind, and persevere in your strength? How is He inviting you to love? THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 4, 2018 Our Mission Statement

Church of Corpus Christi FROM THE PASTOR STEWARDSHIP Roseville, Minnesota Brothers and sisters, Whiplash: an injury caused by a severe wrenching of the head. Last week I experienced whiplash between Friday and Saturday. Don t worry, no car accidents were involved. First, on Friday night a number of parishioners joined me at the Abria Pregnancy Services celebration banquet (Abria.org) the same one you ve seen announced in the bulletin. Hundreds of people from all over the Twin Cities gathered to learn about and support Abria s mission to offer free services to clients experiencing an unexpected pregnancy in an atmosphere that is safe, non-judgmental, and supportive. Jessica stood up and told her story of finding Abria when she discovered she was pregnant while attending a local college. The people at Abria, she said, stood with her and empowered her to make a choice for life, even when there was so much to fear and seemingly no one in her corner. Then she showed the room a picture of her beautiful son, Elijah. The spirit in the air was full of light, hope, goodness, and love. Then came the whiplash. On Saturday I went to see the movie Gosnell: The Trial of America s Biggest Serial Killer. The film, whose advertising spots were forbidden by several major media outlets, is based on the true story of the trial of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell. A grand jury found him guilty of three counts of murder (of infants born alive) and one count of involuntary manslaughter (of Karnamaya Mongar). Coworkers testified to Gosnell delivering live infants hundreds of times and then violently killing them. His conviction was brought about, in part, by photographs taken by staff who were waking up to what was actually happening. When asked why she took a photograph of victim Baby Boy A, Kareem Cross responded, Because it was big and it was wrong and we knew it. We knew something was wrong. As medical imagery of pregnancy has advanced, it s no longer possible to keep our eyes closed to the truth of what abortion actually is: it is the killing of a human life and it is always wrong. When I recovered from the intensity of what I had seen I compared these two experiences. In one, I experienced the darkness and despair of a culture that says to the world s Jessica s: If you choose life, you re irresponsible. You re dumb. You ll be poor. Miserable. Outcast. There s really only one choice. In the other, I experienced the hope and kindness that comes from just one other person who says: Wherever you are at, we are here for you. You have choices. We love you. You are strong. You have dignity. You can do this. We re not going to walk away. This is also the Good News of the Christ and the Church for anyone who finds herself at such a crossroads: Wherever you are at, we are here for you. We love you. You are strong. You have dignity. God forgives. God heals. God has a plan. God loves you. And we re not going to walk away. In the love of Christ, Father Marc Paveglio
