I. Israel multiplies in Egypt Understanding the Bible Lesson six Deliverance from Bondage And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. Exodus 1:7 A. Egyptian Pharaoh feels threatened by them II. Israelites are made slaves Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built the Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour. Exodus 1:11, 14 A. There are still brick yards near Goshen III. Pharaoh Kill all the male children And Pharaoh charged all, saying, every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive. Exodus 1:22 A. Satan always tries to kill the deliverer B. Moses, Jesus, 1.3 to 1.4 billion abortions in last 30 years IV. A deliverer is born And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child there in; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink. Exodus 2:2-3 A. Jochebed refuses to accept Pharaoh s decree B. Where did this idea come from? V. Jochebed is paid to raise her own child

Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew woman, that she may nurse the child for thee? Exodus 2:7-8 A. God provides a deliverer using Pharaoh s protection VI. Moses And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, because I drew him out of the water. Exodus 2:10 A. Moses became Pharaoh s grandson VII. The burden of leadership settles on Moses And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. Exodus 2:11 A. Moses kills the Egyptian B. He was about 40 years old at this time VIII. Moses brethren reject his leadership And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? Exodus 2:13-14 A. The Israelites didn t have a clue that Moses was God s chosen leader IX. Moses flees to Midian Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well. Exodus 2:15 A. Moses stays in desert of Midian for 40 years B. God is preparing him to lead Israel for 40 years X. Children of Israel cry unto the Lord

And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. Exodus 2:23-24 A. The covenant: Your descendants will dwell in the Promised Land XI. God appears to Moses And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. Exodus 3:2-3 A. God speaks to Moses from the bush XII. I will send you unto Pharaoh And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. Exodus 3:8, 10 A. I will bring them out of Egypt B. I will bring them into the Promised Land XIII. Pharaoh will not let you go And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand. And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go. Exodus 3:19-20 A. I will smite Egypt B. After that, he will let you go

XIV. Moses I can t do this And the Lord said unto him, what is that in thine hand? And he said, a rod. And he said, cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. Exodus 4:2-3 A. What is in your hand? B. Put your hand into your bosom leprosy XV. Moses I m not a good speaker And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou has spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. Exodus 4:10 A. When Moses thought he could do it, he wasn t ready B. I will send your brother Aaron with you XVI. XVII. The people believed God s word And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel: And Aaron spake all the words which the Lord had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. Exodus 4:29-31 Moses and Aaron before Pharaoh And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, thus saith the Lord God of Israel, let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. And Pharaoh said, who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go. Exodus 5:1-2 A. Let my people go B. Pharaoh refuses just like God said he would

XVIII. Pharaoh The people are idle And Pharoah said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens. And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying, Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. Exodus 5:5-7 XIX. Israel s leaders are beaten And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh: and they said unto them, the Lord look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us. Exodus 5:20-21 A. Moses & Aaron, you are causing us trouble XX. The ten plagues Water into blood Land full of frogs Dust turns into lice Swarms of flies (not in Goshen) Murrain killed the cattle (none of Israel s) Boils Grievous hail destroyed everything left in the open Locusts Darkness Slaying of the first born XXI. Passover observance established Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the pass over. And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. Exodus 12:21-22

XXII. The blood guards against death For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. Exodus 12:23-24 A. We still observe this with the Lord s Supper XXIII. Firstborn killed in every house where there was no blood At midnight the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead. Exodus 12:29-30 XXIV. Pharaoh Go! And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the Lord, as ye have said. Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also. Exodus 12:31-32 A. Pharaoh is contrite XXV. Israel spoils the Egyptians And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment; and the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians so that they lent unto them such things as they require. And they spoiled the Egyptians. Exodus 12:35-36 XXVI. 600,000 men plus women and children leave Egypt And the children of Israel journeyed from Raamses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children. Exodus 12:37 A. Their number was seventy 430 years prior

Exodus 12:42 A. Type of repentance; leaving the bondage of sin XXVIII. Moses carries the bones of Joseph out of Egypt And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you. Exodus 13:19 XXIX. God guides Israel with cloud by day and fire by night And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night. Exodus 13:21 A. Type of being led by the spirit in the New Testament XXX. The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. Exodus 14:13-14 A. The Lord shall fight for you

XXXII. Stretch your hand over the sea and divide it But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. Exodus 14:16 A. Israel goes through on dry ground XXXIII. God drowns the armies of Egypt And the Lord said unto Moses, stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. Exodus 14:26, 28 XXXIV. God provides manna and quail And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host. And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground. And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, it is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, this is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat. Exodus 16:13-15 A. They were totally reliant upon God B. A type of the New Testament spirit and truth

XXXV. The Ten Commandments given Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me: And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work; but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour s wife, not his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour s.
