MOON WILD DARK MOON MAGIC FOR THE SOLAR ECLIPSE 2017 Renée Starr
DARK MOON MAGIC The dark moon is unseen. Energetically speaking, it is a place of the void, a place of limbo, and one of the midpoints of the lunar cycle, the full moon being the other. The dark moon straddles the threshold of this world and the next, allowing us to travel back and forth if we choose, and under the darkness of this moon we find ourselves in this liminal place of the void, where nothing has been formed yet, and where everything awaits creation. Another aspect of the void is that it is the place of death, passing, transformation, and endings. The dark moon is an excellent time for healing, and letting go of old emotional wounds, pain, trauma, and confusion. Feminine and receptive in nature, the dark moon occurs when, due its position, the moon is not reflecting the bright light of the sun. It is said that when the moon is dark, she is going within herself, to be with her own essence, power, and nature. And it is this going within, this darkening of the moon that sets the tone of the entire lunar cycle, for when the moon goes within, she is regenerating, renewing, and resetting. At this time, we can go within to seek our own counsel, and to be in stillness, meditation, prayer, inwardness, contemplation, and trust for our own renewal, and resetting. In the dark silence, and stillness of this moon, you can discover not only who you truly are, but you can also reveal that which is hidden, unhealed, and unrealized within you, and recover a lost sense of freedom, passion, and desire. In addition, you may find that this moon helps you to reclaim the permission to be wild in the most feminine of ways. Traditional lunar wisdom suggests that no magic is to commence during the dark moon as the veils are very thin at this time, and it is too chaotic, and unstable of an energy to be worked with, but I have found that this is a very special time for a very special kind of magic, which is the liminal magic of darkness, and shadow. ECLIPSE MAGIC Eclipses are powerful, magical events that blend the energies of the moon, sun and earth in exceptional and unique ways. Eclipses can help to balance any imbalances of light, and dark, masculine, and feminine, and physical, and spirit that you may have, and they are also potent times for making moon-water, charging crystals, and working with lunar, earth, and solar magic, which is the magic of the dark, the in-between, and the light.
COSMIC ESSENCE WATER Making your own cosmic essence water is a very special way of working with the energy and the power of water, and whatever you will be infusing it with. Energetically speaking, water is feminine, and receptive, and it is related to the emotions, dreams, compassion, love, sadness, intuition, healing, rest, cleansing, dissolution, astral travel, death/rebirth. It is extremely impressionable, and can be programed with even the slightest of your intentions, as well as the energies of anything that you intend for it to be infused with, such as the power of the ocean, the moon, planets, sun, and stars. If you are familiar with the idea and process of making flower essences, then you are also familiar with making charged essence waters, as both techniques aim to capture the subtle, yet powerful energetic essence, or imprint of a thing. You can use essence waters to sip during a ritual, pour it into a bath, mist your aura with it, and you can also spray this water on tools that you will use in your rituals, such as crystals, candles, etc. You can also bless objects and people with essence water. If you decide to make essence water for drinking, please use bottled spring water, keep your medicine in the fridge, and use within two weeks. Never use tap water for making essence water, and do not use distilled water for essence water intended for drinking, as drinking distilled water can leach vital minerals from your system. Distilled water is the preferred choice for making essence water not intended for drinking, as this water has a bit longer of a shelf life. If you wish to keep your charged water drinking or otherwise a bit longer than a week, or two, add some vodka (about 15-20%), as this will prevent your water from growing bacteria, and other undesirable things. I often draw symbols, such as astrological, alchemical and such, and also affirmations, intentions and prayers on a piece of paper, then place a bowl of water upon it to let it absorb the heavenly energies, and the energy of the symbols and words overnight. You can leave your bowl indoors, or outdoors, and I like to cover my bowl with something clear, such as a glass plate or glass pot lid so that insects, dirt and other unwanted debris does not fall into it, but the moon, sun, or starlight can still shine through. It is also ok if the only covers that you have are opaque, the heavens will still infuse into your water, as they will be directed to do so by your intentions. If you intend to charge your essence water with the moon, or other nighttime light sources, such as planets, and stars, make sure that the water is not going to be in direct sunlight once dawn arrives, as then it will become charged with the energies of the sun as well. If it is your intention to add the sun to your recipe, then leave it out until you feel the sunlight has been infused. It is good to know that sun-and-moon water has tremendous balancing, harmonizing and re-
aligning effects, and sun-moon-and earth water, which can be made during a total solar eclipse, has even more of these qualities. Energizing the water with the moon alone can be used for dreaming, intuition, and for working with The Divine Feminine, and also for working with the shadow self when infused during the dark moon. Water infused with the sun alone which is called sun water, or solar essence water, is also quite healing, energizing and revitalizing, and can be used for working with abundance, energy, health, and for working with The Divine Masculine. I have made moon-and-star water to capture the effects of the constellations that the moon is passing through, and have also left water out during very specific celestial events, such as meteor showers, blue moons, and eclipses, etc. You can capture the essence of specific lunar phases, too, simply by making your moon water during that time. You can infuse your cosmic essence water with anything that you choose - the possibilities are endless! GODDESS MAGIC Invoke the archetype of the crone, wise woman, or dark mother aspect of The Goddess during dark moons. Often represented as the archetype of grandmother, the word crone is an old form of the word crown, which suggests the sage wisdom of the matured queen, and the eminence of light radiating from the crown chakra of one who has reached illumination. The crone is the keeper of women s mysteries, and the seer, healer and the midwife. Her knowledge and experience is essential to surviving life's difficulties and transitions, and she also symbolizes the end of life, the transition into death, and the passage of the soul from the body. When a dark moon occurs during a total solar eclipse, you can also work with The Triple Goddess, which expresses the archetypes of the maiden, the mother, and the crone, and symbolizes the coming together of these three aspects within you. During a total solar eclipse we experience the increasing power of the moon as the maiden, the supportive earth as the mother, and the sun, which is dying, disappearing from view, and becoming dark, as the crone. CRYSTAL MAGIC OF THE DARK MOON Garnet is a stone for traveling between the realms, for working with your moon-time blood, and for accessing the subconscious. It is a deep, dark; red colored stone that seems to burn with an inner, dark, fire. The word garnet comes from the Latin word, granatus, which means seed-like, and was in reference to this stone s similarity to the pomegranate seed.
The pomegranate, is a fruit that is associated with hidden treasures, the ones that lie just beneath the surface and are waiting to be revealed. The pomegranate is also associated with darkness, going within, and the descent of the human soul into the realm of the dead, as exemplified in the myth of Persephone, which tells of her travels into the lower realm of her beloved, the god Hades, where she became bound to that realm after eating a pomegranate seed. Garnet is a stone of ancient memories, the subconscious, ancestral ties, protection, foundation, shelter, security and strength, and it is also about regeneration, vitality, and order. Garnet can boost and revitalize you, and will help you to set intentions, ground your dreams in reality, stimulate abundance, and prosperity, and also help you to manifest your wishes. DARK MOON PRAYER Dark Mother, Crone Woman, Ancient One. I call upon your knowing. And I ask for the blessings of wisdom. Bones of the ancestors, blood of the moon, stars in the night sky. I call upon your teachings. And I ask for the blessings of understanding. Wheel of time, wheel of seasons, wheel of wisdom. I call upon your guidance. And I ask for the blessings of direction. Heart of my heart, soul of my soul, womb of my womb. I call upon your mystery. And I ask for the blessings of acceptance. Dark moon, starry sky and black of night. I call upon your magic. And I ask for the blessings of surrender. All that is asked is given. All that is given is received. And, so it is.
PLANT MAGIC OF THE DARK MOON The poppy plant is well known for its associations to sleep, sedation, peacefulness, the subconscious and the underworld, and so it is a wonderful plant to work with for during the dark, inner and mysterious dark moon nights. Associated with the moon, the feminine, female fertility, intuition and healing, poppy helps one to travel deep into the psyche, to retrieve memories, view past lives, and travel through the astral realms. Also associated with death as some parts of the plant are poisonous, poppy is thus associated with transformation and the soul. Sip a cup of California poppy tea (Eschscholzia californica) to help with your dark moon meditations, when visioning the month ahead, and for relaxation, astral travel, and sacred dreaming. TOTEM MAGIC OF THE DARK MOON The spirit of crow is a very helpful companion and guide when first learning to walk between the realms, whenever you are in the place of beginnings, when you are seeking answers, and whenever you are in need of cleansing, purification and protection. Crow is a guardian, shape-shifting spirit, and a keeper of magic, wisdom, power and mysteries, most especially those mysteries that cannot be revealed in an ordinary way, and the wisdom that is unknowable by the ordinary mind. Crow is also the keeper of the Sacred Laws, which are the Spiritual and Karmic Laws of the Universal and Natural World. As a walker between the worlds, crow expertly guides the soul from this life to the next, and also guides the living soul as it travels to the lower and upper realms, and deep into the wilds of the psyche with ease. Crow is often found at the portals, crossroads and thresholds of the between times, which are dawn, midnight, twilight and during the ending and beginning of an eclipse. Crow s message for you is to seek, find and then bring forth your inner magic, inner power and inner wisdom.
