Risky Business? Jaynan Clark It seems in the present tense of this world groaning in travail (under the heavy weight of sin), we all acknowledge that we are a world at risk. Daily we are reminded that the risk level is high or severe or critical. We are at risk of physical attack. We are at risk of cyber attack. We are at risk of terrorist attack. We are at risk of cultural, societal attack. We are at risk of our foundational principles being attacked and destroyed. This is not new news -- it is just alarming news. But before we run and hide in a fallout shelter, order large pallets of food, or disconnect from all modes of communication, we need to remember that we have been through many times of challenge and we are not in this alone. In the midst of risk some hide, some drink or get high, some act out violently and others pray. Prayer is what Jesus recommended. Actually, let s correct that; prayer is what Jesus commanded. Is it truly the least you can do? It is often said, At least I can pray for you. Yikes! Language alert!! No, the most you can do is pray. When we ascribe to that contemporary quip that Prayer is the greatest wireless connection and believe it, Jesus says we can do anything. So is that risky to tell people? Is it risky business to encourage people to pray like no other? Is it risky and setting people up for disappointment to tell them to pray and assure them that you are praying also for them (and then actually do it!)? What is the risk in praying for miracles? Praying specifically and repeatedly and even selfishly is an engagement in conversation with the Almighty Himself, so what could be wrong with that? Nothing! First off, God knows you are a self-absorbed, shortsighted, selfish sinner. That is why He sent Jesus to die for you. He knows you are going to pray out of your limited sight and understanding. He knows that you are going to pray for what you want to happen, when you want it to happen, and how you want it to happen. Or -- He also knows that you won t pray at all because you just don t feel it or remember to do it or even know what to say. He knows that the tag line, Your Will be done while Biblical is perceived as risky and scary. If we believe as believers that it is our responsibility to defend God or explain Him and His Will, we will not pray as Jesus has commanded us to do. If we are focused on the rate of success and the correlation of what we ask for and what God does, then we will pray according to a track record. Many are afraid to pray for miracles because it will give people false hope or raise their expectations and set them up for disappointment. Really? Many are afraid to pray for miracles because then when they don t happen then they risk weakening or destroying someone s faith in God. Really? Many are afraid to pray for miracles because when someone doesn t get healed and dies then they don t know what to say about God and so they fall silent. For real? It is a sad thing how our sin blinds our eyes and blocks our ears except to the whisperings of the evil one. The tempter wants to tempt you to not pray. To say you will when you don t. To not trust that there is such a thing as miracles and an active, hands-on, loving God. The devil wants you to neglect prayer so you are in a relationship where silence is deafening between the parties and therefore closeness is compromised. The goal is to alienate you from your Father in Heaven and to diminish your faith in His power, presence, goodness, grace and limitless love. Calling on the name of Jesus and praying in His name is central to our faith as a church family. To pray without reservation or defense knowing that God is going to do what God is going to do is blessed assurance devoid of risk. continued on p. 3

continued We are all going to die someday, in some way. We don t know when that is going to happen or how. No human being, no matter how many degrees they hold or how great their training is, can tell you when that is going to happen and how. God, and only God -- Father, Son and Holy Spirit -- holds this knowledge in His eternal wisdom. All matters of life and healing and death and resurrection are His business. It is all in His hands. Surely a risk free zone. Save the Date! HTLC is going to the Spokane Indians baseball game! Game Date: Friday, August 4 th First pitch at 6:30pm, gates will open at 5:30pm Promotion: Fireworks Night! Our goal is to keep in contact with all our members who are sick and shut-in via phone and or home/nursing home visits to assure the shut-ins that their church is still interested in both their physical, and spiritual well being. We do have a few members that are wanting to attend Worship Services at HTLC, but are unable to drive themselves to and from church. We are looking for volunteers that can pick up a church member before Worship Service, and then drive to return them after. If you are willing to drive on an upcoming Sunday, there is a signup sheet in the Hall or please contact Lon Roberts if you have any questions or concerns. Music Makers This is a music ministry provided by the West Valley Kiwanis each Thursday at 6:30pm at HTLC.
