The Prairie Land Lutheran Parish Messenger April 2017 Friends in Christ: This Lent, as we remember the 500 th anniversary of the beginning of the Lutheran Reformation, we are spending some time with Martin Luther s Small Catechism. If you ve been a Lutheran for a while you may know that Luther wrote this little book to teach the very basics of the faith: the Ten Commandments, the Apostles Creed, the Lord s Prayer, the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. These are the subjects we cover in Confirmation classes. Parents promise to teach these things when their children are baptized. But did you know there is more in the Small Catechism than that? It s easy to forget the other parts, because we don t talk about them as much. In addition to a section on confession (which kind of goes with the section on baptism), Luther also includes a template for praying at the beginning and end of each day, and before and after meals. He wrote these prayers so that families of all sizes could use them at home. (He usually recommends saying the Lord s Prayer and Apostles Creed at the same time, and making the sign of the cross.) In case you want to use them for your home devotions, here are the morning and evening prayers: Martin Luther s Morning Prayer I give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have protected me through the night from all harm and danger. I ask that you would also protect me today from sin and all evil, so that my life and actions may please you. Into your hands I commend myself: my body, my soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel be with me, so that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen. Martin Luther s Evening Prayer I give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have graciously protected me today. I ask you to forgive me all my sins, where I have done wrong, and graciously to protect me tonight. Into your hands I commend myself: my body, my soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel be with me, so that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen. The meal prayers are a little more complicated (there is an introduction to each that I am omitting), and there s one for both before and after the meal! Table Blessing Lord God, heavenly Father, bless us and these your gifts, which we receive from your bountiful goodness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Thanksgiving (after a meal) We give thanks to you, Lord God our Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, for all your benefits, you who live and reign forever. Amen. If you try these prayers in your home, I d love to hear what you think of them, and how it goes! Oh, and remember: Easter is coming! Pastor Sarah
