ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 2 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Masses for the Week of August 16, 2015 Mon. 8/17 THIS WEEK IN OUR PARISH August 16, 2015-August 23, 2015 STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise Ephesians 5:15 ALTAR APPOINTMENTS August 22nd & 23rd A wise person recognizes that all we have comes from God. A wise person thanks God every day for all His many blessings. A wise person realizes that God has blessed us for a reason and He wants us to be partners with Him in His work here on earth. That we make wise choices in how we live as God s stewards and have the courage to turn away from foolish wants. Family Perspective By Bud Ozar In today s Gospel, Jesus speaks of eating his flesh and blood. Parents can identify with this, for they often feel devoured by all the demands of family life. This is unavoidable for children grow in the soil of sacrificial love. Parenting is not part-time work. It is a consuming lifetime commitment. Eucharistic Adoration Sponsor of the Week: Please add Blundy- Hoppes Tire & Auto Clinic as sponsor of the week Eucharistic Adoration will make your soul everlastingly more glorious and beautiful in Heaven. Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 August 16, 2015 Wise Up Ephesians 5:15-20 There are always ways to improve your skills. If you play bridge, you learn by joining a club. If you play music, you learn with a good teacher. If you play sports, you learn by watching the pros and practicing under the tutelage of a good coach. If you want to improve your life as a Christian, there are many ways to learn. Books, newspapers, and journals abound for those who learn by reading. Prayer groups are helpful for those who learn by devotion and conversation. Lectures are available for those who like to hear the personal testimony of a gifted speaker. We have lots of opportunities to learn about our faith. Aquinas College Visit Day Friday, August 28 th Aquinas College in Grand Rapids is hosting an AQDay for all high school juniors and seniors interested in visiting their beautiful 117-acre campus. The Admissions Office invites you to come and discover what life at AQ is really all about. Get the inside scoop on academics, athletics, scholarships, service learning, study abroad, and more. Please visit aquinas.edu/undergraduate for more details or to register for the event on August 28 th. Without more understanding, we stagnate in misperceptions, and we become susceptible to false teachings. The Letter to the Ephesians expressed concern that its Christian readers were not learning enough. Watch carefully how you live, it says, not as foolish persons but as wise. We all have opportunities to learn, but not everyone seizes them. Do not continue in ignorance, the letter says, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord. In many parts of the planet, the elderly lament that once beautiful landscapes are now covered with rubbish." Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 August 16, 2015 St. Patrick School This is part III of a three- part series following the summer pursuits of the students at St. Patrick School. Over the past couple of years, I ve heard some of our high school students talking about attending DYMO Camp. I was curious to find out more about this experience that I have heard our students speak so excitedly about so I volunteered to deliver our students to camp on our bus so I could find out more. I initially did some research to find out what DYMO Camp is all about. I learned that DYMO stands for Diocesan Youth Ministry Organization and has been ministering to youth in the Diocese of Grand Rapids since 1972. While it is not a formal Diocesan ministry, it is endorsed by the Diocese of Grand Rapids. It has served over 4,000 Catholic high school students since its inception. I learned that DYMO Camp is an opportunity for high school youth (to attend DYMO Camp 2016, students must have been attending high school or the home school equivalent during the 2015-2016 school year) to explore their faith and themselves. DYMO s stated mission is Awakening Catholic youth to the power, love, and mercy of God and the change He can make in their lives. Held every year in June at Camp Pinewood YMCA Camp in Twin Lake, MI., DYMO is a week-long experience in a relaxed and faith-filled environment surrounded by God s creation. Camp includes: Prayer, reflection and daily Mass Large Group presentations Small group discussions General Workshops Prayer Workshops Music, dance, singing, art and creative expression Normal "camp" activities like swimming, boating, team challenge courses, archery, fishing, campfires and games. In all, 34 students, or approximately one-third of all students attending DYMO Camp this year were from St. Patrick Parish. St Patrick High School was represented by 25 students (almost 30% of our high school). I have students return from DYMO Camp each year that have had their lives truly transformed. In fact, the term I hear used the most is life changing when students describe their DYMO Camp experience. One student described it as a comforting place to make new friends and strengthen your relationship with God. Many of the students are already excited about returning to DYMO Camp again next summer and are more than happy to share their camp experience with others.
