I. Introduction The Great Race January 1, 2017 Hebrews 12:1-3 Well, it s that time of year it comes every 365 or 366 days when many people take time to look back at the past and then worry about the future. Although not much can be done about the past or the future, some people become so concerned about them that they make New Year s resolutions to hopefully make things better in the future which over time will become their past. There really isn t anything wrong with looking back at where a person has come from and where they are going, the important thing is what one does after the looking. The Christian life has been compared to many things; in 2 Timothy 2:3 Paul wrote to endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus; in 1 Timothy 6:12 we read, Fight the good fight of the faith; in 1 Peter 2:16 Christians are called slaves of Jesus Christ; in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:13-16 Christians are called the lights and the salt of the world. Here in Hebrews 12, the Christian life is compared to being in a race. As we begin a new year, let s look at these verses as they tell us about the race of a Christian; including its encouragement, its hindrances, its prime Example, and its goal or prize. II. The Race The writer of Hebrews wrote that the Christian life is like a race but the trouble is that many people, who call themselves Christians, aren t in a race at all many are just jogging along, some are walking slowly and some are even sitting or lying down. The word used here for race is the Greek word avgw,n. This is the word from which we get the English word agony. This race the Christian race; the Christian life isn t a gentle run around the block or racing a grandchild from point A to point B. It is a demanding, agonizing marathon. The Christian race is a long-distance race not a sprint. As the author of Hebrews writes, we aren t to give up we are to run with perseverance. The word perseverance in verse 1, which some Bibles translate as patience or endurance doesn t mean to sit down and stoically endure what happens. Perseverance, patience, endurance all mean to refuse to be stopped or sidetracked. It is a steadfast endurance or staying power which carries on until the end or the goal is reached. The Lord doesn t want sprinters those who go a short distance and then quit; He wants those who will go the whole distance. He wants Christians to keep going even when everything in them wants to slow down or give up. Putting it a different way: Christians should put the Energizer bunny to shame. Without a doubt, there will be obstacles and we will become mega-tired, but we must persevere 1

or remain steadfast if we are to win. Isaiah 26:3 says, You (O God) will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Turn to 1 Corinthians 9:24-27. It doesn t make much sense to be in a race, an agonizing race, if you have little or no desire to win. Why even waste your time? Paul is saying that if people train and compete to their maximum ability for a prize with no eternal significance, what should be done for a prize of eternal value? Paul ran with perseverance. He didn t pursue comfort, money, popularity, position or anything else but God s glory and God s will. This is what Christian commitment is all about this is the race of a Christian. Our race isn t a race of works, but a race of faith. 2 Corinthians 5:7 says, We live by faith, not by sight. But we don t compete against each other in faith. We are all in this race together. In 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Paul wrote, Encourage one another and build each other up. We compete together by faith against Satan, his world system and our own sinfulness. Our strength to compete doesn t come from ourselves if it did, we would all fail. In Philippians 4:13 Paul wrote, I can do everything through him who gives me strength. The Christian has only one way to run by faith. Faith in God and His will. When we run through faith in the power of God s Spirit, we will run successfully. We will persevere. III. The Encouragement To encourage those who are running this Christian marathon, the writer of Hebrews reminds us of those who have gone before us those who have already run this race of faith. For a quick snapshot, turn back to Hebrews 11:4-5, 8, 20-23, 29-40. These men and women aren t spectators watching us; they are witnesses-examples to us that God can see us through anything that comes our way. The writer is saying that You should run like they did. It can be done, if you run as they did in faith. They ran and ran and ran, and they had less light less knowledge to run by than you have. They were victorious and you can be, too. Their examples are to encourage us to run our best. The same God who was their God is our God. He can do the same things through us as He did through them. All we need is to have faith and trust in Him. IV. The Hindrances Our daughter runs in marathons and half-marathons. When she comes to the starting line, she removes anything that will hinder her. She gets rid of her warm ups and removes any other excess weight she might have on. She makes sure she has on her best and lightest shoes. She wants nothing to be able to slow her down or to needlessly tire her out. 2

If we are going to compete to our best, we need to get rid of anything that will hinder us. These hindrances may be good things, but they will make it hard to compete. This may be choosing between the better and the best. A hindrance is anything that slows us down, diverts our attention, and dampens our enthusiasm for the things of God. For example, I would love to have the newest smartphone or technology. But unlike some people, I don t need one to do my job and I know that if I had one, I would spend too much time playing with it. For me this would be a hindrance it would divert my attention from God to something else. What is there in your life that uses up time and/or attention that could be better used for God s work? They may be good things, but your time and efforts could be put to better use for God. An even more significant hindrance to Christian living is sin. Obviously, all sin is a hindrance, but the use of the word the in verse 1 of Hebrews 12 seems to indicate a particular sin. One particular sin that hinders the race of faith is unbelief doubting God. It was unbelief that kept Israel out of the Promised Land; it is unbelief that hinders us from competing to the best of our God-given abilities. The phrase by faith or through faith is used at least 21 times in Hebrews 11. Doubting and living-infaith contradict each other. Unbelief wraps itself around us so that we trip and stumble every time we try to move for the Lord, if we even try moving at all. When we allow sin in our lives, especially unbelief, it is quite easy for Satan to keep us from running. We need to get rid of everything, whether good or bad, that will hinder us in our Christian marathon. V. The Prime Example In running, as in most sports, where you look is extremely important. Nothing will throw off your stride or slow you down more than by looking at your own feet or looking at the runner coming up behind you or at the crowds in the stands. The same is true for the Christian in his race. Christians aren t to be preoccupied with themselves or with what other Christians are thinking or doing. Christians are to focus on Jesus Christ. He is the author and perfecter. He is the supreme example the prime Example for our faith and our race. As the author He is the pioneer or originator of all faith; He is the chief leader or chief example for all Christians. Hebrews 4:15 says that He has been tempted in every way, just as we are yet was without sin. Jesus lived the supreme life of faith. When the devil tempted Him in the wilderness, Jesus reply each time demonstrated His trust in His Father and His Word. Jesus repeatedly said that He would wait until His Father supplied or protected or directed. Jesus trusted His Father for everything and in everything. 3

In the Garden of Gethsemane, just before His arrest and trial and crucifixion, Jesus prayed in Matthew 26:39, My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will. Whatever hardship or suffering lay ahead, He trusted His Father. God s will is what Jesus lived by and died by. The witnesses of Hebrews 11 are great examples, but no one can match Jesus faith in God. Jesus is our prime Example and He is also the perfecter of our faith through faith, He completed the work God had given Him in John 19:30 He was able to say, It is finished. Jesus birth that we just celebrated was just the beginning on the cross Jesus work was both over and finished it was perfected. He accomplished exactly what He was meant to do, because from birth to death, Jesus life was totally committed into His Father s hands. Jesus set such a high example of faith that it is on Him and Him only that we should rivet our eyes. It is good to glance at the examples of the cloud of Old Testament and New Testament witnesses, but it is imperative that we fix our eyes on Jesus. As we read in 1 Peter 2:21, we should follow in his steps. V. The End of the race - The Prize Have you ever watched the faces of those that run in a marathon? Unlike those that go running just for the pleasure of running, they don t look like they are having a lot of fun. If they didn t have something important to look forward to at the end of the race the prize, many of their faces seem to say that they wouldn t have started the race and certainly they wouldn t finished it. Jesus didn t run His race of faith for the pleasure of the race itself either. He might have felt some pleasure healing others, comforting those in need, and even directing others to knowledge of the True God. But He didn t leave His Father s presence and all He had in heaven to endure temptation and opposition from Satan himself. He didn t enter the race on earth to suffer ridicule, scorn, torture, and crucifixion by His enemies and to be betrayed by His own disciples. He was motivated by much more than this. Jesus went through and endured all that He did for the prize at the end of the race. Verse 2 tells us that Jesus ran His race for 2 things: the joy set before Him and sitting down at the right hand of the throne of God. Turn to John 17:4-5. Jesus gained His reward by glorifying His Father while on earth by exhibiting His Father s attributes and by doing His Father s will. His reward was to be exalted to God s right hand. The prize for which Christians run is not heaven. If you are truly a Christian, if Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, then heaven is already yours (Romans 10:9). We run for the same prize for which Jesus ran, and we reach it in the same way He did. We run for the joy of being lifted up exalted as God promised if we glorify Him on earth as His Son did. We glorify God by allowing His attributes to 4

shine through us and by obeying His will in everything we do. What should give us joy in this life is confidence of reward in the next. Even if we must suffer for the Lord here on the earth, we should still be able to rejoice. In 1 Peter 4:13 the Apostle Peter wrote, But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. Turn to Philippians 3:12-14. Like Paul we need to forget what is behind and press on to reach the end of the race. We need to look forward to the day when our Lord says to us, Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness! (Matthew 25:21) VI. Conclusion So what about you? Are you in the race? Is Jesus really your Lord and Savior? If you are in the race, how committed are you to doing God s will before your own? Earlier this morning, you prayed, Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). Did you mean it? As you look back over the past year, have you grown or have you just maintained the status quo or maybe even slid backwards a bit? Are you in a marathon or just a fun run? If we were going to write a continuation of Hebrews 11, would your name show up there? Are you in the race or are you barely moving? 5
