NORTHERN LIGHT GRAND TRAVERSE DISTRICT UMW June 2018 IMPORTANT DATES OF UPCOMING EVENTS Mission u July 11-14 Albion Mission Day August 9 Lake City District Annual Celebration Sept 15 Epsilon PURPOSE OF THE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN The organized unit of United Methodist Women Shall be a community of women Whose PURPOSE is to know God And to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ To develop a creative, supportive fellowship And to expand concepts of mission through participation in the Global ministries of the church. WELCOME TO WHAT WILL SOON BE CALLED NORTHERN WATERS DISTRICT! 1

TIPS FROM THE TREASURER This is a reminder to local Treasurers about this year s donations. All local unit UMW Checks should be made out to the Grand Traverse District UMW for this entire year. All original units in this District will pay their 2018 pledges to the Grand Traverse District UMW. January 1, 2019 will start our new accounts and new names for our area. I ask for your patience during this transition time. Thank you for your beneficial donations for our missions by making our District Pledge of $37,500.00. 16 Units earned a 5 Channels of Mission Giving Certificate at the end of 2017. This means they each gave at least $5 in all five categories of Mission Giving. The categories are Pledge to Mission, Special Mission Recognition, Gift to Mission, Gift in Memory and World Thank Offering. The Grand Traverse District UMW has also sent these units a Congratulation Gift to Mission card in their honor. At our September meeting, Certificates will be received to give your unit recognition for a goal accomplished and the many Blessings that you have made possible. I hope you all can earn this Certificate by the end of 2018. This is the last year for The Shining Light Award and Lighthouse pin. Please order your Lighthouse Pin by August 15 th. Our special Grand Traverse District UMW Lighthouse Pin has been our symbol and is proudly worn by those who receive it from their local units. It can be ordered by your local UMW Treasurer for at least $13.50 ($10 for Gift to Mission donation and $3.50 for the pin) and the check sent to me, your District UMW Treasurer. As our District is coming to a close, this is a necessary change. August 15 is the deadline for all names appearing in our September UMW Meeting Booklet. Please send me your orders for recipients of Special Mission Recognition pins and Shining Light pins. Keep in mind that your order will take about 6 weeks to receive the SMR pin and national certificate. I already have the names on orders sent before June 10 th. When we start our new Northern Waters District UMW in January 1, 2019, we will have a new symbol of a wave. The award will be called, The Waves of Love Award. The pin is made of pewter and has a wave on it. In 2019 the Wave pin can be ordered and will be at least $15.00($10 for Gift To Mission donation and $5.00 for the pin). Sister in Christ, Sally Smith-GTDUMW Treasurer, 231-775-3216 2

Mission Updates: Our annual summer Mission Day will be held August 9, 2018 at Lake City United Methodist Church. A registration form is included in this newsletter. Please BRING A FRIEND so we can have a wonderful turnout as we are very fortunate to have Pastor Julie Elmore from the Coldwater United Methodist Church as our speaker. Her first assignment was in Nome, Alaska and she will be sharing her first hand Alaskan experiences. A statement she made during her presentation last summer at Mission u of the North really resonated with me: When doing mission work, ask what they want. DO NOT assume their needs. I feel this is extremely important to keep in mind whenever working in the mission field and hope she shares concrete ways we can be missionaries of value and usefulness. Your completed Mission Today form, also included in this newsletter, is due by July 31. (Mid August if you re running a little behind!) We have had an increase in the number of units successfully completing the requirements. YAY!!! There is still plenty of time to fill it out and receive SPECIAL RECOGNITION at our District Annual Meeting in September!!!! Happy summer!!! See you in August in Lake City! Pam Moyer Education & Interpretation Mission Coordinator Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. Song of Songs 2:12 This is a quote from a 2018 Assembly display: By inviting members to explore topics they may not normally pick up to read, the UMW reading program expands members understanding of those topics and how they relate to their lives and the world. It's an opportunity to read, discuss, act and pray together. 3

So please continue to read! Please email me at dennisgocha@aol.com the reading program level reached and the books you've read by August 1st so we can prepare for the district annual meeting. Or you can send this list in the mail to me at: Linda Gocha, 4349 Cosier Rd, East Jordan, MI, 49727 Thank you, Linda Gocha GTDUMW Secretary/Program Resources 231-536-0837 ATTN: PRESIDENTS & SECRETARIES: Have all your individual UMW members registered online? If not, it s not too late. PLEASE encourage them to go to the website for UnitedMethodistWomen.org and click on the Blue Box my UMW: add your info & get your membership card. This brings up the page called myumw application. Find the sentence that says Watch the video below or scroll down to begin. After watching this informative video, type in the zip code in which YOUR CHURCH is located and click on the Search box. A long list of churches will appear. You ll want to scroll way, way down to find the name of your church which is listed in the Grand Traverse District, West Michigan Conference, and North Central Jurisdiction. Then click on the green Select box that is UNDER the orange Choose box on the far right of your screen. Continue on completing this online survey. At the very end of this survey, click on the blue Submit box. In addition to this individual UMW survey, I still need you to either e-mail me {jharecol@hotmail.com} or call me {231-839-2885} with your UMW unit s membership statistics for last year {2017} ASAP. Thank you to those units who have already submitted their membership statistics. Jane Tinsley, Membership, Nurture & Outreach Coordinator 4

Are you planning to go to mission u? The deadline for registration is June 27. Registration and information were sent in the March newsletter. There is also a Mission u of the North October 15 & 16 ( corrected dates from previous publications) in Gaylord. Those registration forms will be sent in the September newsletter. Our Annual celebration will be held September 15 in Epsilon. Our speaker will be Linda Darrow, Conference UMW President. Who doesn't like to shop for baby items? Ingathering will be baby supplies for the Pregnancy Care Center of Petoskey. Needed items are: larger size diapers, sleepers to 2T, wipes and pacifiers. These registrations will be sent in August. If you need copies of any of these, please email trudihook@charter.net or call 231-882-1392. SPRING?? RETREAT APRIL, 2018 5

6 The retreat was enjoyable despite the weather. Our speaker, Glenys Nellis, author of childrens' books, was excellent.
