Learning FROM, not just ABOUT, the other. We don t just need to understand one another. We need one another to understand ourselves. (Jean Halperin) We do not truly love others until we are willing to learn from them, which happens ONLY in RELATIONSHIPS.

Muslim views of Jesus Born of the Virgin Mary; miraculously conceived; an act of creation, NOT of reproduction (unlike Muhammad) Miracle worker (unlike Muhammad) Prophet and Messenger (like Muhammad) Jesus viewed as sent specifically to Jews Purely human (like Muhammad), NOT divine Christian doctrines of Incarnation and Trinity: viewed as improper innovations (we ll address this next class) Didn t die on the cross; raised up by God (unlike Muhammad) Will visibly return at the end of the Age, introducing the Day of Judgment (unlike Muhammad)

Strict Monotheism In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful. Say, He is God the One, God, the Eternally Sufficient unto Himself. He begot no one nor was He begotten. No one is comparable to Him. (112 al-ikhlas) Issues: Last line: metaphors are problematic if taken literally! Yet they are necessary if we are to speak AT ALL about God. ALL religious language is analogical, metaphorical, symbolical. This sura was revealed to address issue of God s daughters in Meccan society, not Jesus; but if the shoe fits.

Strict Monotheism People of the Book, do not go to excess in your religion, and do not say anything about God except the truth: the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was nothing more than a messenger of God, His word, directed to Mary, a spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers and do not speak of a Trinity stop [this], that is better for you God is only one God, He is far above having a son, everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him and He is the best one to trust. The Messiah would never disdain to be a servant of God. (Qur an 4:171-172a) The problem with son of God language: taking it literally When Muslims hear this language, they think Christians are claiming that God had sex with Mary, to produce an additional God! Christian theology has ALWAYS denied that, BUT many Christians do think that! Son of God language in Christianity did NOT originate with the birth story of Jesus! That s NOT what it s talking about! Muslim theology challenges Christians to think through what Christians actually mean by their own language! That challenge is an opportunity for Christians to become better Christians!

Strict Monotheism In 1 st -century Judaism & early Christianity, son of God did NOT mean a divine being! Israel was called son of God ; ALL Davidic kings were called son of God ; any righteous, exemplary person was called son of God ; various Jewish rabbis were called son of God NOT viewed as divine beings! NT calls Adam, peacemakers, those who love their enemies, and faithful people sons/daughters of God despite GJohn s only-begotten son for Jesus Jesus did NOT use this term to distinguish himself from others! In Christianity, son of God and other exalted titles simply underscores that it views Jesus as DEFINITIVE for understanding God, humanity and reality, JUST AS Muslims view the Qur an to be DEFINITIVE for understanding God, humanity and reality. Was the Word (Logos) that became flesh in Jesus created by God, or eternal? (Arian controversy, which partially led to the Nicene Creed) Was the Qur an as Word of God created by God, or eternal? Both traditions said NO to it being created! Yet, NOT another God, but the ONE God is definitively conveyed & encountered there!

On the Day when God assembles all the messengers God will say, Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favour to you and to your mother: how I strengthened you with the holy spirit, so that you spoke to people in your infancy and as a grown man; how I taught you the Scripture and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel; how, by My leave, you fashioned the shape of a bird out of clay, breathed into it, and it became, by My leave, a bird; how, by My leave, you healed the blind person and the leper; how, by My leave, you brought the dead back to life; how I restrained the Children of Israel from [harming] you when you brought them clear signs, and those of them who disbelieved said, This is clearly nothing but sorcery ; and how I inspired the disciples to believe in Me and My messengers they said, We believe and bear witness that we devote ourselves [to God]. When God says, Jesus, son of Mary, did you say to people, Take me and my mother as two gods alongside God? he will say, May You be exalted! I would never say what I had no right to say if I had said such a thing You would have known it: You know all that is within me, though I do not know what is within You. You alone have full knowledge of things unseen I told them only what You commanded me to: Worship God, my Lord and your Lord. (Qur an 5:109a, 110-112,116-117a)

Those who say, God is the Messiah, son of Mary, have defied God. The Messiah himself said, Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. Those people who say that God is the third of three are defying [the truth]: there is only One God. The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a messenger; other messengers had come and gone before him; his mother was a virtuous woman; both ate food [like other mortals]. See how clear We make these signs for them; see how deluded they are. Say, How can you worship something other than God, that has no power to do you harm or good? God alone is the All Hearing and All Knowing. Say, People of the Book, do not overstep the bounds of truth in your religion and do not follow the whims of those who went astray before you they led many others astray and themselves continue to stray from the even path. (Qur an 5:72a,73a) You [Prophet] are sure to find that the closest in affection towards the believers are those who say, We are Christians, for there are among them people devoted to learning, and ascetics. These people are not given to arrogance, and when they listen to what has been sent down to the Messenger, you will see their eyes overflowing with tears because they recognize the Truth [in it]. They say, Our Lord, we believe, so count us amongst the witnesses. (Qur an 5:82b)

Strict Monotheism Qur an seems to view Trinity as referring to God, Mary, and their offspring, Jesus, i.e., related to son of God language This is a reaction to language in Byzantine Christianity which spoke of Mary as theotokos, mother of God NOR are Muslims happy with Father, Son and Holy Spirit language. Christian theology affirms ONE God, does NOT view F, S & HS as three beings, does NOT view F, S & HS as three parts of God though many Christians do (and shame on them!) What Christianity was trying to claim was that the ONE God the infinite, unfathomable source of all reality (F), who is definitively expressed in Jesus of Nazareth (S), and who encounters and transforms humans in an ongoing way (HS) is ONE Divine Reality reliably encountered then and NOW. Deals particularly with how we encounter God That intention is valuable, BUT if the mark of good theology is its ability to effectively communicate its intention, Trinity doctrine has NOT succeeded very well!

Strict Monotheism Christians should NEVER expect Muslims to view Jesus as son of God OR to accept the doctrine of the Trinity It s in-house language for Christians Christians use that language ONLY because Jesus is viewed by them as DEFINITIVE for understanding God, humanity and reality That language is NONSENSE apart from that basic Christian presupposition. Christians need to do a MUCH better job of understanding and communicating their own theology, because it is EASILY MISUNDERSTOOD. Muslims cannot and SHOULD NOT use that language, because they view the Qur an received and embodied by Prophet Muhammad to be what is DEFINITIVE for understanding God, humanity and reality. It would violate what is central to Islam. Similarly, Muslims should NEVER expect Christians to view the Qur an and Prophet Muhammad in the same way Muslims do. It would violate what is central to Christianity.

Something is seriously wrong when the ONLY way people can talk with one another is if OTHERS must deny their own experience of God, and therefore must deny who they are. BUT, Christians and Muslims can, and should, share with one another what they do understand from their OWN presuppositions about the ONE God and the ONE God s relationship with humanity and the created world, and what that means for how they live. Similarities are STRIKING. Differences are mutually illuminating.

Word of God = definitive self-expression of God Christianity In-carnate/ En-personed in Jesus Norm expressed as person BUT to convey / unpack what this meant, it had to use words (New Testament) persons words Islam Definitive self-expression of God always must be interpreted In-scribed /intoned in Qur an Norm expressed as words BUT to convey / unpack what this meant, it had to point to a person (Muhammad) words persons

For both traditions, it is crucial BOTH to personify / to live What Matters Most (WMM) AND to put that into words. THE SEQUENCE WOULD SEEM TO BE IRRELEVANT! A permanent dialectic, talked about in different ways A life, which must be expressed in words Words, which must be expressed in a life Approached somewhat differently: Christians: two natures of Christ (divine & human) Muslims: Qur an (divine) and Sunna of Prophet (human) The authoritative sources in Islam The divine (WMM) must be expressed in human life. A general principle and pattern for humanity, NOT reserved JUST for Jesus (or JUST for the Qur an and Sunna) This allows Jesus to function truly as norm in Christianity, rather than be viewed primarily/merely as freak To be Christian is to be fully human. To be Muslim is to be fully human. Cannot reverse ITHER sentence! Norms are to shape the audience

Christian beliefs / rituals Muslim beliefs / rituals If we look at values the overlap is even greater Reminder: There s great diversity in both Islam & Christianity Christian values Muslim values That which is distinctive is NOT necessarily what is most important Beliefs / Rituals express and/or point to values But incompletely, imprecisely Multiple beliefs / rituals can point to the same / similar values True both within, and between, religious traditions

Predestination (qadar) in Islam Insha llah: God willing, If God wills said when dealing with future Masha llah: God wills it said after good OR bad events Fatalism??? Qur an repeatedly claims two things that REMAIN in tension: Every person is responsible for one s own actions they re NOT puppets Otherwise, there is NO sin and NO accountability God is present and involved in EVERYTHING (good & bad) that happens God does NOT intend horrible things to happen God does NOT cause horrible things to happen BUT horrible things DO happen, and Muslims say, God wills it! which means 1. God has willed a world in which such things can happen 2. Deal with it! - as a person of faith; EVERY situation is a call to action! Respond with strength, courage, hope, responsibility Respond with compassionate assistance and deep solidarity Problem of Evil is NOT finding an explanation - (can t explain away tragedy!), but of RESPONDING appropriately to it!

Whether speaking about Jesus or Qur an, or particular beliefs or metaphors, they are ALL fingers pointing at the Moon, i.e., at God, at WMM. Don t argue about the fingers; talk about the Moon!

We [i.e., God] have assigned a law and a path to each of you. If God had so willed, He would have made you one community, but He wanted to test you through that which He has given you, so race to do good: you will all return to God and He will make clear to you the matters you differed about. (Qur an 5:48)

O mankind! Truly We [i.e., God] created you from a male and a female, and We made you peoples and tribes that you may come to know one another. In God s eyes the most honored of you are the ones who are most God-conscious: Truly God is Knowing, Aware. (Qur an 49:13)
