Psalm 57:4 My soul is among lions; I lie among the sons of men Who are set on fire, Whose teeth are spears and arrows, And their tongue a sharp sword. Jeremiah 9:8 Their tongue is an arrow shot out; It speaks deceit; One speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, But in his heart he lies in wait. James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. James 3:8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Psalm 12:3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, And the tongue that speaks proud things, Psalm 52:4,5 You love all devouring words, You deceitful tongue. God shall likewise destroy you forever; He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah *seems pretty serious to me. Proverbs 17:20 He who has a deceitful heart finds no good, And he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil. Matthew 12 34-37 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. Verbal aggression is all speech used with the intent of harming another. 1. Cursing. Calling upon a supernatural power to bring harm on another: Exodus 21:17 Anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. Notes: 2

2. Reviling. Insulting and hurling verbal abuse at another: Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. 3. Guile. Using deceitful and misleading words to cloak malicious intentions: Psalm 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. Psalm 101:5,7 I will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor. I won't tolerate one who is haughty and conceited. He who practices deceit won't dwell within my house. He who speaks falsehood won't be established before my eyes. 4. Bearing false witness. Testifying falsely in a court of law to another s harm: Proverbs 19:5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape. Proverbs 25:18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. 5. Slander. Speaking evil of another, usually to third parties: Leviticus 19:16 You shall not go up and down as a slanderer among your people; neither shall you stand against the life of your neighbor. I am the LORD. James 4:11-12 Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. Numbers 12:1-2 Miryam and Aharon spoke against Moshe because of the Kushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Kushite woman. They said, Has the LORD indeed spoken only with Moshe? Hasn't he spoken also with us? the LORD heard it. Numbers 12:4-8 The LORD spoke suddenly to Moshe, and to Aharon, and to Miryam, Come out you three to the tent of meeting. They three came out. The LORD came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the door of the Tent, and called Aharon and Miryam; and they both came forth. He said, Hear now my words: if there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known to him in a vision, I will speak with him in a dream. My servant Moshe is not so; he is Notes: 3

faithful in all my house: with him will I speak mouth to mouth, even manifestly, and not in dark speeches; and the form of the LORD shall he see: why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moshe? Numbers 12:10 The cloud removed from over the Tent; and, behold, Miryam was leprous, as white as snow: and Aharon looked at Miryam, and, behold, she was leprous. James 5:9 Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! Matthew 18:15-17 tells us very plainly what do. Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. 1 Peter 4:15 For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil doer, or as a meddler in other men's matters. Proverbs 17: 22 A cheerful heart makes good medicine, But a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 18:44 A man's spirit will sustain him in sickness, But a crushed spirit, who can bear? Here are a few questions that you can ask before giving ear to someone: 1. Why are you telling me? 2. Where did you get your information? 3. Have you gone to those directly involved? 4. Have you personally checked the facts? Proverbs 18:8 says it well: The words of a gossip are like dainty morsels: They go down into a person's innermost parts. Slander goes deep down inside of us, affecting us on the deepest levels. 1 Peter 3:10 For He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. He who does not backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend; Proverbs 10:11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life. Proverbs 12:18b But the tongue of the wise promotes health. Proverbs 15:23 Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad. Romans 15:2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. Romans 15:14 Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. Psalm 51:15 O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. 1 Peter 3:8-10 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. Best Practices Thank you for joining us today at El Shaddai Ministries! In order to bless and protect our congregation, we have put some guidelines in place and ask those attending to observe these to the best of their ability. Parents please monitor your children and keep them from roaming the hallways or lobby area. They should be in class or seated with you. At the close of the service please take your items, i.e. notes etc. to respect the cleanliness of the Sanctuary. Please return any unmarked notes you do not wish to keep to the box at the back table. Please dress modestly so as not to be a distraction to others, and dress your best to honor God, and in respect of the Sabbath. ONEG (Potluck Lunch) It has been a long standing tradition at El Shaddai Ministries to fellowship together after the service every 2 nd Saturday by sharing a meal. El Shaddai Ministries provides all the beverages for the break and oneg. Please do not add items to the table. Bring items to oneg staff in kitchen. If you are blessed to be able to bring a dish for oneg, please observe the following guidelines: All items must be checked in with the oneg staff. Items not checked in will not be served. All items must be marked with your name and phone number. Only bring Biblically clean foods, i.e. NO pork, shellfish, or gelatin products. Please bring fresh cooked dishes and not leftovers. Packaged food must be unopened. Also after ONEG make sure to take your dishes and utensils home. If there is any question as to these standards please discuss with the Zakens after the service. We ask that you let seniors; first time visitors and those with mobility issues go first in line. Parents of small children please help your child with their plates.
