The Life of Faith #3: Miraculous Faith THE GIFT OF FAITH 1 Corinthians 12:9 lists faith among the supernatural gifts of the Spirit. The gift of faith is distinct from the faith we have in Christ life and works, which leads to salvation. The gift of faith refers to the supernatural endowment of the Spirit to remove mountains, undertake great enterprises for God s Kingdom, cast out devils and performs miracles. 1. The gift of faith is a gift. I Corinthians 12:7-9 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given faith by the same Spirit. The Scriptures tell us that not everyone has all of the gifts of the spirit (1 Corinthians 12:27-30). We shouldn t expect everyone in the church to walk around with mountainmoving gifts of faith, however, we should expect some to. If we don t find the gift of faith in our mix, we are to obey the command of Scripture, and earnestly ask the Lord for the gifts we lack. Pursue love and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts. (1 Corinthians 14:1) 2. The gift of faith builds up the church. One distinction between the gift of faith and saving faith is to whom it benefits. Faith that is common to every believer is for the salvation, sanctification, and the perseverance of that individual. The gift of faith, on the other hand, is for the edification of the church, and the expansion of God s kingdom. The gift of faith supports, and encourages others in their struggles helping them grow in their faith. Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. 2/19/2017 rev 1 Page 1 of 8

3. The gift of faith is crucial for God s mission. Without the gift of faith, God s mission cannot be accomplished. The whole purpose of spiritual gifts is power for mission. Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household FAITH FOR HEALING Because of man s sin in the Garden, the curse of sickness and disease is rife in this fallen world. Consequently, faith for healing is one of the challenges we face. 1. The Atonement of Jesus has made provision for our healing. Scriptures affirm that Christ died for our sins and for our sicknesses. Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely our griefs He himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. Matthew 8:16-17 And when evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demonpossessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, He Himself took our infirmities, and carried away our diseases. 2. God s promises include healing Scripture affirms that healing has always been a provision of God s Covenant. Exodus 15:26 If you will diligently listen to the voice of your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases upon you, which I have put upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that heals you. Matthew 9:35 And Jesus was going about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. 2/19/2017 rev 1 Page 2 of 8

3. Healing demonstrates Christ s destruction of the works of the enemy. Acts 10:38 You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed by the devil; for God was with Him. Hebrews 2:14 that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil HEALING METHODS OF JESUS Jesus utilized different methods to heal the sick. Three times Jesus laid His hands on people (The Leper, The Man with Dropsy, The Slave s Right Ear). Six times Jesus spoke the word to people (The Centurion s Servant, The Paralytic on the Roof, The Syro-Phoencian Woman, The Dead Man of Nain, The Man at the Pool, Lazarus). Four times Jesus touched and spoke to people (Peter s Mother-In-Law, The Two Blind Men, Jairus Daughter, Blind Bartimaeus). Four times Jesus commanded them to do something (The Man with the Withered Hand, The Ten Lepers, The Child of the Royal Official, The Man Born Blind). One time Jesus was touched in faith (The Woman with the Issue of Blood). Two times Jesus used other unique methods (The Deaf and Dumb Man, The Blind Man and the Walking Trees). One time Jesus used an undisclosed method (The Demon Possessed Blind and Dumb Man). WHY PEOPLE DO NOT GET HEALED The Bible records some reasons why people do not get healed. Unbelief. Matthew 13:58 And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief. 2/19/2017 rev 1 Page 3 of 8

It is important to note here that the unbelief to which the Scripture is referring in this passage is not unbelief in the possibility of miracles. Generally speaking, people at the time the Gospels were written were more inclined to believe in supernatural activity, than the people of our days. The unbelief that Jesus faced in Nazareth was unbelief in His nature and character. They could not get passed the fact that Jesus was the son of Joseph and Mary, and would not accept that he was the promised Messiah, despite of what they heard and what they saw. Unconfessed sin. James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. I Corinthians 11:28-30 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself, if he does not judge the body rightly. For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. God s sovereign purposes. (II Corinthians 12:7) Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me to keep me from exalting myself! The price for our salvation and healing has been completely paid on the cross; yet our redemption will only be completed when we receive our resurrected bodies. Until that day, we should approach the throne of God with confidence knowing that HIS work on the cross includes provision for healing, but not with despair or judgment when a person does not get healed. FAITH FOR PROSPERITY 1. The Scripture affirms that God has desires to prosper His people. Deuteronomy 8:18 But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Psalm 112:1-3 How blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. Matthew 6:33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these 2. The redeeming work of Christ is inclusive of every aspect of human life. 3 John 1:1 I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. 3. We ought to have faith for prosperity because it is a mean to expand God s kingdom. Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor the Lord from your wealth, and from the first of all your produce; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine. I Corinthians 9:10-11 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. Philippians 4:15-17 And you yourselves also know, Philippians, that at the first preaching of the gospel, after I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you alone; for even in Thessalonica you sent a gift more than once for my needs. Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek for the profit which increases to your account. 2/19/2017 rev 1 Page 8 of 8
