R E F L E C T I O N S The life of holiness is the life of faith in which the believer, with a deepening knowledge of his own sin and helplessness apart from Christ, increasingly casts himself upon the Lord, and seeks the power of the Spirit and the wisdom and comfort of the Bible to battle against the world, the flesh, and the devil. Edmund P. Clowney The presence of the Holy Spirit can always be recognized by the way he moves us toward what Jesus would be and do. When we inwardly experience the heavenly sweetness and power of life the love, joy, and peace that Jesus knew, that is the work of the Spirit in us. Dallas Willard The central role of the Spirit is to reveal Christ and to unite us to him and to all those who participate in his body. Just as the indwelling of Christ and the indwelling of the Spirit are two aspects of one and the same reality in the New Testament; so to sustain us 'in Christ' is the heart and soul of the Spirit's ministry. Sinclair Ferguson from The Holy Spirit The gift of the Spirit is the gift of becoming involved in mission, for mission is the direct consequence of the outpouring of the Spirit. P R A I S E CALL TO WORSHIP: from Romans 5:5; Psalm 105 Pastor: The love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us; People: We dwell in him and He in us. Pastor: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name; People: Make known his deeds among the people, Pastor: Sing to him; sing praises to him! People: Speak of all his marvelous works! Pastor: Come! Let us worship! HYMN OF PRAISE: 76 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. 2

C O N F E S S I O N SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 19:7-14 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. 13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN: All: Holy God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we praise you as the God of love and life. Though Jesus prayed that we would be one, we confess that we fail to live in unity with each other and with you. We break our communion through hostile words and unkind actions. We long for your Spirit to heal us and to correct us. We long for you to help us experience communion with you and with each other as we gather around your Word and Table. Even now, dependent on your grace, we commit ourselves to live more fully in the unity you desire, to serve You and others as You have commanded. Grant us grace and strength to live as your holy people. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen. SILENT REFLECTION AND CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE & PEACE OF GOD: 2 Corinthians 5:17-18, 21 Pastor: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation... God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. May the Peace of God be with you always. All: And also with you. C O M M I T M E N T OFFERTORY PRAYER OFFERTORY Simple Gifts arr. M Schubert Presentation of tithes & offerings DOXOLOGY (Hymnal, page 731) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: Nicene Creed Leader: Christian, what do you believe? People: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. RESPONSE: 735 Gloria Patri PRAYER OF INTERCESSION HYMN: 334 Breathe on Me, Breath of God 4

P R E A C H I N G O F T H E W O R D SCRIPTURE: Galatians 5:13-26 13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the 14 flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: You shall 15 love your neighbor as yourself. But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not 16 consumed by one another. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the 17 flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the 18 flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if 19 you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual 20 immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, 21 dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you 22 before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the 23 Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against 24 such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its 25 26 passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. SERMON: The Spirit: Law Keeper and Community Builder Rev. Jeff Pate HYMN: 597 Though I May Speak with Bravest Fire st. 1,2 RESPONSIVE READING: Pastor: All: Pastor: C O M M U N I O N Our Lord commands all believers to eat this broken bread and to drink this cup in true faith and in the confident hope of his return in glory. In this supper God declares to us that our sins have been completely forgiven through the one sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which he himself finished on the cross once for all. He also declares to us that the Holy Spirit grafts us into Christ, who with his very body is now in heaven at the right hand of the Father, where he wants us to worship him. THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER Riverwood Presbyterian uses wine in the celebration of Holy Communion.
