St. Mary on the Hill May 25, 2014 Please keep our Holy Father, Pope Francis in your prayers as he is presently traveling in the Holy Land (May 24-26). The Pope s agenda will focus on the search for Christian unity, particularly between the Catholic and Orthodox churches. But inevitably, in a region so rich in history and so fraught with conflict, he will address other urgent issues, including dialogue with Jews and Muslims, the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and the plight of the Middle East s shrinking Christian population. The Vatican has emphasized that the pope s main purpose on this pilgrimage is to meet in Jerusalem with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, considered first among equals by Orthodox bishops. Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew are scheduled to meet four times during the pope s three-day visit. Their private meeting May 25 will mark the 50 th anniversary of the encounter in Jerusalem between Pope Paul VI and Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras of Constantinople, which opened the modern period of ecumenical dialogue. Hopefully the two great lungs of the Church, East and West, will begin to breathe as one in fulfillment of our Lord s Prayer that we all may be one so that the world may believe. Pray for the Pope s safety and pray for Church unity. Please keep our Bishop Greorgy John Hartmayer in your prayers as he continues to seek our support for the Church s many ministries throughout south Georgia. Our Faith Community has a history of great generosity. Actually, I should say a portion of our faith community has a history of great generosity. A little over 20% of our parish members have gotten us to 86% of our parish goal for this year s Appeal. So, I am certain if another 20% of our parishioners could be a little bit generous we could easy reach our goal. The Bishop has sent out a second letter to those who have given in past years and who have not yet given this year. If you have been a regular supporter of the Bishop s Annual Appeal in the past, please continue that generous tradition and mail in your gift for this year. If you have never given to the Annual Appeal, I implore you to consider joining your parish family in keeping the Catholic community of South Georgia alive, vibrant, Christ-centered, and responsive to the needs of God s people. Please take a look at the BAA information that was sent to you in the mail. If you ve lost it, I found it was very easy to make my pledge on-line this year at http://diosav.org/baa. Thanks for your support and your generosity. Please keep Sr. Josephine in your prayers. Last week I bid farewell to my spiritual mentor, Fr. Charlie. This week I will be seeing my dearest supporter and friend off as she heads to her community s retirement home in Tenafly, N.J. Sr. Josephine has been quietly suffering from terrible back pain for a long time and in the last few weeks it has totally incapacitated her. She is such a holy woman and is at peace with this move. Pray that somehow she might find relief from her pain. Pray for me too. I can t tell you how very much I will miss her. She is the most loving religious I have ever met. I know the many folks who are homebound are sick to see her go. Sr. Josephine brought so much joy to them as she faithfully made her rounds week after week. We will never be able to replace her caring presence but I have promised her I am committed to carrying on her wonderful ministry to the homebound of our parish. I will have the retirement addresses of both Fr. Charlie and Sr. Josephine in next week s bulletin. Please keep in your prayers all our veterans and all who are presently serving in our country s armed forces. This weekend we remember in a special way those who have given all for our country and laid the ultimate sacrifice on the altar of freedom. We also pray for those who have borne the burdens of deployment; for those who have faithfully served God and country; for those who now wear the cloth of our country and serve with honor, courage and commitment, that we might give thanks for their faithful service this Memorial Day. Congratulations to all those who are graduating from Aquinas High School today. Congratulations to all our parishioners who are graduating from other high schools this week. On the Way Home: And he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth. Discuss how you experience the Holy Spirit in your life. Discuss the ways you love Jesus and the ways you feel his love in your life.
