Our Lady of Czestochowa Catholic Church 120 Sussex Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302 Celebrating Our 100 th Anniversary Our Mission The mission of our parish is to reach out to all people and encourage them to join us in joyfully giving praise and glory to God; to build a Christian community that, with trust in God, embraces the future, and in doing so, is a beacon of faith, hope and love on the Jersey City waterfront. Our History Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, or OLC, was founded in 1911 to serve Polish immigrants to Jersey City. Today, OLC is growing and changing as it seeks to serve all those who now live in our neighborhood. The church takes its name from a city in Poland that houses a cherished icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A copy of that icon is centrally located in our historic church. 1911 2011 Rev. Thomas J. Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 17, 2010

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, As we host our Parish Picnic today at St. Peter s Prep, I extend my thanks and gratitude to the Jesuit community and to Prep Administrators and Staff for the use of their grounds and facilities, for their assistance and for their help in making our picnic possible. I very much appreciate the support services they are providing: tables, chairs, ice, etc. Such things are essential to making our event successful. As we celebrate our picnic today, let us mark the event as a 100th Anniversary Celebration of community. While we worship together as a community of faith, another important aspect of celebrating community is the time we socialize together. This is an important way for us to come together and get to know each other. In doing so, we are able to increase the bonds of faith and community that exists between us. After we celebrate our picnic, we will move on to the communal celebration of the Sacrament of the Sick on Saturday, November 6. Once called Extreme Unction, many people received this Sacrament when they were at the point of death. In the past, a priest visiting someone who was ill was often considered an ominous sign. The visit prompted the sick person to ask, Am I dying, and are they not telling me? There are also cases when those who were ill often did not want a pastoral visit because they believed that, If he does not give me the Sacrament then the visit from the Grim Reaper will be put off. Over the years, we have needed a great deal of re-education. The Sacrament is no longer called Extreme Unction. Instead, it is called the Sacrament of the Sick. As the name indicates, this is a Sacrament intended to bring healing, strength, encouragement, God s Grace and comfort. It is a Sacrament particularly for those who are ill, have chronic health conditions and are aged. A person can receive the Sacrament of the Sick prior to an operation, during a communal service, or when confined to their home because of age. It is also for those dealing with a prolonged illness and medical treatment or simply going through a difficult medical condition. I hope that our celebration of the Sacrament of the Sick on Saturday, November 6 at 11:00 am, will be a success. Make every effort to attend if you wish to receive this Sacrament. It truly has the power to touch your mind, heart, soul and body with the peace and healing of the Lord. As an additional note, there will be a luncheon in the Church Hall after the Mass. As we come to a richer understanding of the purpose of this wonderful gift, come and experience for yourself the healing power of the Lord. With Love, MARRIAGE AT OLC PARISH PICNIC THIS SUNDAY You are invited to the Parish Picnic this Sunday, October 17, 2010 after the 12:30 pm Mass. The picnic is free and will be held in front of St. Peter s Prep Gym on Warren and Grand Street. All are welcome and the food is free. Come with your children, family and friends. PARISH COUNCIL Congratulations! Sharon Marie Stimpfle and Matthew Allen Riggs celebrated their Nuptials at OLC this past Sunday, October 10, 2010. The Finance Council along with the Pastoral and Building & Grounds Councils comprise the three advisory bodies to the pastor. The Finance Council normally meets once a month to discuss various matters relating to the parish s financial health. Our parish has many talented professionals with unique and diverse skills. As such, you may be able to make a significant contribution to your parish. Do you have planning skills? Have you worked in fundraising or grant writing? Many of these may appear to be exclusively business related, but such skills can go far in our society as we strive to make the parish strong in promoting the Good News of Jesus Christ. If you think you have to time to give, contact Fr. Tom.

SACRAMENTS FOR CHILDREN The Sacrament of Penance We celebrate First Penance in the second grade and will begin preparation in the late winter. The children will receive this Sacrament on the Saturday before Palm Sunday. The Sacrament of Holy Communion We celebrate First Holy Communion in the third grade and will begin preparation in the early spring. We usually celebrate First Communion in May. The exact date is not yet set because of the Parish s 100 th Anniversary Activities. As time draws closer, we will set the date in consultation with the parents. The Sacrament of Confirmation We celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation every three years; and, this is the third year. Children in grades 6, 7 & 8 will be prepared for reception of this Sacrament. Presently, we do not have a date set. Parents have called the rectory inquiring about these programs. We want to start setting up our programs for our children to receive these sacraments. If you have a child or children who will be receiving First Penance, First Holy Communion or Confirmation this year, please call the rectory or email Fr. Tom at pastor@olcjc.org. Provide us with your name and contact information. Additionally, if you wish to help in any of these programs, please contact the rectory. SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS Reflect on today s readings. Prepare for next Sunday This Sunday, October 17, Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Ex. 17:8-13; 2 Tm. 3:14-4:2; Lk. 18:1-8 Next Sunday, October 24, Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sir. 35:12-14, 16-18; 2 Tm. 4:6-8, 16-18; Lk. 18:9-14 WEEKLY COLLECTION Thank you so very much for your financial support. Many of our parishioners believe that it is important to financially support their parish. Thank you for living your financial commitment. Your support helps us to achieve our weekly collection goal of $6,000 per Sunday. For the weekend of October 9 and 10 there were a total of 434 people who attended Mass. The total weekend collection came to $6,739 (of that amount $2,136 came from parish members making their contributions electronically through Parish Pay). This amount is $739 ABOVE our weekly goal of $6,000 per Sunday. We appreciate all those who act as good stewards of their time and treasure by joining us for Mass in their faithful giving for the collections; and we ask that more parishioners and visitors be responsible stewards supporting the parish. Please note a correction for the weekend of October 2 and 3. The collection was incorrectly noted as $8,087 but was actually $6,842. ANOINTING MASS Save The Date and Time We will celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick on Saturday, November 6, 11:00 am.
