Memory Verse: Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do. Ecclesiastes 4:9, NIrV Bible Story Focus: God made me to praise Him. David Praises God 2 Samuel 6:5, 14; Psalm 149:1-5 Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 10 minutes) Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as Your 3-, 4-, or 5-year-olds arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. 1. Freeze Praise (could just use the worship music and have the tech guy stop it when you want to freeze) Freeze Praise is an activity that uses movement and silliness to engage the children for the introduction of the Bible story. What You Need: No supplies needed; Option: Together from the Wherever I Go CD What You Do: Before the Activity: Guide the children to stand in front of you. During the Activity: Begin to sing the song Together to the children. Encourage them to dance while you are singing. After the first verse, stop singing and say, FREEZE! Encourage the children to be very still until you start singing again. Stop several more times during the song and say, FREEZE! What You Say: Before the Activity: Let s dance! I am going to sing our together song and I want you to dance! When I stop singing and I say, FREEZE, everyone stop dancing and get really still! Are you ready? (Pause.) During the Activity: Here we go! (Start singing.) FREEZE! Great job being frozen. OK, here we go again! (Start singing again. Continue as long as interest holds.) First Look 3- through 5-year-olds, May 22, Week 4 Small Group After the Activity: That was so much fun! Dancing is always fun! It is always a great way to praise God! That is what our story is about today! 2. Friend Chain Friend Chain is an activity that allows the children to visualize the monthly theme. What You Need: Person from the Activity Pages found on the Website (alternately, the gingerbread like men can be purchased), red heart stickers, and crayons What You Do: During the Activity: Give each child a friend and encourage them to decorate it to look like them with the crayons. After the Activity: Make a chain of all of the friends by placing a red heart sticker to connect their hands. Staple the Friend Chain on the wall around your classroom for parents to see. What You Say: Before the Activity: We are BETTER TOGETHER! Let s show our families how much we love our friends! During the Activity: (Give each child a friend.) Use the crayons and the markers to make this friend look just like you. Make sure you give it hair, a face, and clothes. (Allow the children to work.) Great job! I love all of my friends! After the Activity: Now we have to put them together. We can use these heart stickers (hold up) to help them hold hands. Can you help me put all of our friends together? David Praises God 2 Samuel 6:5, 14; Psalm 149:1-5 Make It Stick (Application Activities, 25 minutes) These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today s Bible story and Bottom Line. Offer as many of the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. 1. Praise Shakers What You Need: paper plates, crayons and a stapler What You Do: Before the Activity: Allow each child to color the paper plate. When they are done coloring, fold the plate in half, put some beans in the plate and staple it shut. What You Say: During the Activity: I love that David played music and danced to praise God in our Bible story today. I want us to do that too! I ve made some fun shakers for us to use today as we praise God. (Hands out the shakers to the children.) After the Activity: Whew! That was really fun. Give each child the shaker that they made. During the Activity: Tell the children that every time they hear say the word PRAISE they should shake their shaker. After the Activity: Retell the Bible story and be sure to say PRAISE several times. What You Say: Before the Activity: I love the shakers that you made today! Let s use them to talk about the Bible story that we heard today. During the Activity: When I say the word PRAISE, everyone shake their shaker like this. (Demonstrate.) Are you ready? (Pause.) Here we go! Today we talked about how David PRAISED God. (Shake.) He loved God and wanted to PRAISE (shake) Him in everything that he did. He would dance to PRAISE (shake) God and he would sing to PRAISE (shake) God. We can be just like David and PRAISE (shake) God in everything that we do too! After the Activity: Great job! First Look 3- through 5-year-olds, May, Week 4 CHILDREN and SGL: Two (hold up two fingers) people (touch your shoulders) are better (raise your arms overhead to form a circle) than one (hold up one finger). They can help (pound one fist on top of the other) each other (touch the person next to you on the shoulder) in everything they do (raise your hands overhead and jump up), Ecclesiastes 4:9. (Open your hands like a book.) SGL: Again! (Repeat the verse a few times together.) You sound awesome! OK, friends, you can sit down. It s time to write in our prayer journal. Today we re going to make a list of things we love about our good friend, God. We can use our list to praise Him when we pray, because God made you and me to praise Him, just like He made King David to praise Him. (Write each child s name and what they say beside their names. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters.) This list makes me so happy, and it will make God even happier! Would anyone like to pray before I pray? (Pause.) (Give each child that wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) OK, my turn to pray. Prayer SGL: Dear God, thank You for being our good friend. Thank You for making me and my friends (say each child s name) to praise You. You are so wonderful and we should praise You every day!
