THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ENCOURAGEMENT Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Mark 13:31 This Sunday s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of His arrest and passion. In it, Jesus gives His disciples hope to sustain them through His passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after His resurrection. The words from the Book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever (Daniel 12:1-3). Psalm You are my inheritance, O Lord! (Psalm 16). Second Reading Where there is forgiveness, there is no longer offering for sin (Hebrews 10:11-14, 18). Gospel Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away (Mark 13:24-32). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. A HAPPY AND BLESSED THANKSGIVING TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES! Monsignor Francis McAree Father Abraham Vallayil Deacon John Jurasek THANKSGIVING TURKEY & FOOD DRIVE THIS SATURDAY & SUNDAY As Thanksgiving approaches, our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who may be in greater need than we are at this time of the year. Please consider donating a turkey and other food items to this weekend s annual Thanksgiving Turkey & Food Drive. Supermarket Gift Cards are also welcome! Whatever we collect will be given to families right here in our own Parish, as well as, the Catholic Community Services Food Pantry. If you know someone in need of assistance, please speak with Monsignor McAree. Remember, it is the love and sacrifices made during a lifetime that determine the true meaning in our lives. How blessed we are to be able to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. May God bless you for your generosity. THE LEGEND OF THE FIVE KERNELS It was very cold for the Pilgrims that first winter. Food was in short supply. Some days, they had only five kernels of corn to eat. When spring came, the Pilgrims planted the remaining corn. The sun and rain helped the seeds to grow and much food was harvested in the Fall. Every Thanksgiving thereafter, the Pilgrims placed five kernels of corn beside each plate to remind them of their blessings. The first kernel reminded them of the autumn beauty. The second kernel reminded them of their love for God and each other. The third kernel reminded them of their family s love. The fourth kernel reminded them of their friends especially their Indian brothers. The fifth kernel reminded them that God hears our prayers and answers us. That first year, the Pilgrims made many more graves than homes. No Americans have been more impoverished than they who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving, let us all remember the blessings in our lives. Count the kernels, count your blessings. For flowers that bloom about our feet; For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet; For song of bird, and hum of bee; For all things fair we hear or see; Father in Heaven, we thank Thee. Ralph Waldo Emerson

TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC CHARITIES CAMPAIGN FOR CHARITY AND JUSTICE The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need. Pope Francis Catholic Charities seeks to uphold the dignity of each person as made in the image of God by serving the basic needs of the poor, troubled, frail, and oppressed of all religions. At Cardinal Dolan s request, Catholic Charities of New York launched a project in 2017 to further develop the charitable and justice ministries of Archdiocesan parishes and transform the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in the Archdiocese into the Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice. A special collection will take place this weekend in all the parishes of the Archdiocese of New York. The funds raised through this collection will support parish and community-based projects through grants that meet local needs, particularly those of our poor and vulnerable neighbors. NEXT WEEK S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Next week s Second Collection will help offset our Archdiocesan assessment for the Catholic School System in New York. Thank you for your continued support. CATHOLIC NEW YORK OUR 150 th ANNIVERSARY Please be sure to pick up a copy of the November 8 th issue of Catholic New York from the Ushers tables in the lobby of the Church. There's a beautiful picture of Cardinal Dolan and all of the Priests on the Altar for our 150th Anniversary Closing Mass. But, the article is also amazing - it's all about our wonderful parish and our wonderful parishioners - "No Shortage of Willing Volunteers at 150 Year-Old Blauvelt Parish." Catholic New York is always free to us, a gift from the Archdiocese. This one is definitely "a keeper!" OUR PARISH THANKSGIVING SERVICE THIS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19 th, 7:30 PM Please join us for our Annual Parish Thanksgiving Service, this Monday, November 19 th at 7:30 PM. The service, about 45 minutes long, features our Children s Choir who will lead us in a few beautiful songs, some special prayers and scripture readings, prayers of petition, and our offertory procession of food for those in need. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. OUR PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY THURSDAY, 11/22 AND FRIDAY, 11/23 For emergencies requiring the presence of a Priest, please call the Parish Office at (845) 359-0542. ST. CATHARINE OF ALEXANDRIA VIRGIN AND MARTYR Very little of Catharine s life is known with certainty. The story that has been handed down to us tells us that she was from a well-to-do family living in Alexandria at the beginning of the fourth century, and dedicated her life to education. Her studies led her to consider the truth about Christianity. When she received a vision of Mary holding the child Jesus, she converted to the faith. When the Emperor Maxentius began persecuting Christians, Catharine visited him and rebuked his decision, even though she was just a teenager of 14 at the time. Maxentius could not answer Catharine s arguments, so he gathered 50 learned philosophers to oppose her. When her reasoning converted them, Maxentius was enraged. He tried to seduce her and make her part of his court, but she refused and was beaten and imprisoned. Catharine continued to convert people who came to visit her in prison, including the Emperor s wife, and 200 of his soldiers. When Maxentius found out, he had them all put to death. Catharine was condemned to die upon a spiked wheel. When she was placed upon it, her hands were miraculously freed and the wheel shattered. She was then beheaded. Her martyrdom took place in 305 when she was just 18. 1,100 years following her martyrdom, St. Joan of Arc identified Catharine as one of the Saints who appeared to her and counselled her. Maxentius blind fury against St. Catharine is symbolic of the anger of the world in the face of truth and justice. When we live a life of truth and justice, we can expect the forces of evil to oppose us. Our perseverance in good, however, will be everlasting. November 25 th is typically the Feast Day of St. Catharine, but this year, Sunday, November 25 th is the Feast of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which takes priority. Please pray to St. Catharine, our Patron Saint, on this special day. Saint Catharine, pray for us.
