Welcome to 26th Sunday After Pentecost Sat., Nov. 17, 2018, 5:00 pm Sun., Nov. 18, 2018, 8:30 am Worship Sharing the Shepherd s Love With All of God s Children Giving to God of My Income their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. (2 Corinthians 8:2) Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. PRELUDE On the altar are the Holy Communion kits which are taken to our people who, for a variety of reasons cannot attend worship, to help them share in our celebration of the Lord s Supper. WORDS OF WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP We are called in many directions. First, we will give ourselves to the Lord. There are many who make claims upon our attention, energies, resources, and loyalty. First, we will give ourselves to the Lord. We are a people who have received much and who have much to give. First, we will give ourselves to the Lord. We come and worship God. The God revealed to us in Christ Jesus. Amen. Paul urges the new believers in Corinth to understand that in their freedom, God will be with them. He reminds them that the Christian community in Macedonia has responded generously out of extreme poverty. Elsewhere Paul reminds the Corinthians that God loves a person who gives with joy, and that God is able to bless them abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that they need, they will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:7-8). Our giving can become selective, inconsistent, impulsive, and begrudging. We are often moved with compassion following a disaster, a sense of duty when the church roof or parking lot needs to be replaced, or feelings of obligation when an appeal is made for special offerings. Paul invites hearers to give joyfully and generously. God will make it possible for all to overflow in generosity, whether that means giving two coins or an amount never before considered possible. During worship today, all members and friends of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will be invited to prayerfully and faithfully make a financial commitment to God s work through Good Shepherd in 2019. Commitment Cards are inside your bulletin or available from our ushers. During worship, you will be invited to complete your Commitment Card and bring it forward to be placed near the altar, along with your offering and tithe for the day.

Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. HYMN OF THE WORD Good Soil SCRIPTURE READING 2 Corinthians 8:1-7 Page 434 in the pew Bible The Apostle Paul begins this section of his letter to the church in Corinth with the words, We want you to know, brothers and sisters Paul then goes on to commend the church in Corinth for living generously as stewards of God in ways similar to the churches in Macedonia. As the church of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck, ND, how might the Apostle s words help us grow in our faith with Abundant Joy, Overflowing Generosity in the days, weeks, months and years of our faith journey. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. STEWARDSHIP MOMENT Sunday, November 18 th Hebrews 11-14, 19-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching. As believers, we are meant to encourage one another and to hold one another accountable for the way in which we live and serve. Are you in a faith community where you are regularly challenged and held accountable? Where can a young Christian in your church go to see what giving looks like in the life of a believer? Faith Simonieg, Assistant to the Bishop for Stewardship and Generosity SERMON QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION What habits have you developed in your giving? How can you further develop your giving as a faithful practice in Christian living and discipleship? What personal story would you most like to tell others about where you have found joy in giving?
