St. Francis Xavier Parish 27 th Sunday In Ordinary Time 7 October 2018
Tues. Oct 09 St. Denis; Bishop Oct 11 St. John XXIII; Pope hospital, and nursing facilities; and for all the souls in CONFESSIONS Monday: 5:30 to 6:30pm Saturday: 9:30 to 10:00am Saturday: 3:00 to 3:45pm F F. W REMEMBERING LEPANTO Strong gongs groaning as the guns boom far, Don John of Austria is going to the war, Stiff flags straining in the night-blasts cold In the gloom black-purple, in the glint old-gold, Torchlight crimson on the copper kettle-drums, Then the tuckets, then the trumpets, then the cannon, and he comes. (from Lepanto, by G.K. Chesterton) ISIS, horrible though it has been, has as its aims and methods nothing new. 500 years ago another Islamic force, the Ottoman Empire, was pressing in on Western Europe. They had already conquered the Byzantine Empire, the ancient Christian Empire of the East, and now had the West in their sights. All that stood in their way was a coalition of Christian nations, brought together by the Pope, which was able to muster a small force of ships to oppose the much larger Ottoman Navy. On 7 October 1571 the leader of the Christian forces, Don John of Austria, led his outnumbered fleet to a resounding victory near Lepanto, in western Greece that halted at least for a time the threat of conquest. The Pope was in his chapel before day or battle broke, (Don John of Austria is hidden in the smoke.) The hidden room in man s house where God sits all the year, The secret window whence the world looks small and very dear. That same day the Pope, St. Pius V, was in his chapel praying for the success of the Christian fleet. His special prayer this day was the Holy Rosary. Partway through the day, he suddenly rose from prayer and announced to the others in the chapel that the Christian fleet had been victorious. As a result, he declared 7 October as the feast day of Our Lady of Victory, later renamed Our Lady of the Rosary to emphasize his prayer of that day. Even if we are not tested in the same way as the Christian nations of Europe in the late 1500 s, may the Holy Rosary be for us as it was for them a treasured prayer leading us to Jesus through Mary. Thronging of the thousands up that labour under sea White for bliss and blind for sun and stunned for liberty. Vivat Hispania! Domino Gloria! Don John of Austria Has set his people free!

IDEAS FOR PRAYER BY DOM HUBERT VAN ZELLER H H L: CORI & SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING FOR ALL MINISTRIES: In the letter the Bishop wrote in August he informed everyone of a newly established Office of Safe Environment and changes to our abuse prevention training program and CORI procedures. In light of these changes this year every person volunteering in a ministry has to complete online Safe Environment Training. This training is done on a one-on-one basis, via the computer at https:// fallriver.cmgconnect.org/ and takes about an hour. If you do not have access to a computer or can not navigate the training on your own please call Janine Hammarquist in the parish office to make arrangements for us to provide you with an opportunity to complete this training using our computers at the parish. At the end of the training you will be prompted to print or download a certificate of completion which is good for 6 years. Once you have printed or emailed me the certificate, it will be sent to the diocese along with a completed CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) Acknowledgement Form, Code of Conduct Form and a copy of a valid driver s license which you will need to come into the parish office to complete yearly. If you volunteer at more than one entity within the Diocese of Fall River only one training and CORI request is needed. All Safe Environment Training Sessions and CORI forms need to be completed as soon as possible to be able to continue in a ministry within the parish. Please contact Mrs. Hammarquist if you have any questions. C E: G G C: T S. V P: Upcoming Events BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN: Thanks to all who picked up a baby bottle last weekend to fill with coins (and some bills) for a local pregnancy resource center. THE PRICE IS RIGHT: SAVE THE DATE for our next annual fall fundraiser on Saturday, 17 November from 5 to 8 pm. All proceeds go to assist our fund for parish seminarians and other vocations. PARISH BLOOD DRIVE: Because of a scheduling issue with the blood clinic we were asked to move our blood drive one week ahead. Our parish blood drive will now be held on Sunday, 28 October. See you there! 40 DAYS FOR LIFE: On Saturday, 27 October we will join the fall campaign of 40 Days for Life as we travel to the last abortion clinic in our diocesan territory. This is a non-confrontational prayer vigil in Attleboro: we go there to pray for the women who enter, for the staff that perform this tragic activity, and for all those who walk or drive by us so that they will not fall prey to the culture-of-death. We will sponsor the day by keeping watch with prayer from 6 am until 2 pm. There will soon be a sign-up sheet at the entrance of the church (in the narthex). The clinic is just about one mile past La Salette Shrine which is open for visitors during the day.
