Statue: Mary, Moter of Good Help in Campion, WI Te Miracle of a New Paris Mary Moter of Good Help Paris Reception after tree Catolic Weddings! Te story of ow we now ave a new paris for Hmong Catolics is quite amazing. Mary Moter of Good Help Paris was establised in Wausau on May 8, 2018 wit Fr. Al Burkardt serving as its first pastor. Tis paris as evolved from a long and interesting istory of Hmong presence witin te Diocese. Te Hmong ave resettled in te United States since te fall of Saigon in 1975. Many Hmong people elped te United States during te Vietnam War, and so wen te U.S. witdrew te Hmong ad to flee for teir lives from te Communists. Families lived in te jungles, surviving on bananas and leaves for up to two years. Many crossed te Mekong River to live in refugee camps. Wit sponsorsip, te Hmong were welcomed into te Diocese of La Crosse in tree primary cities: Wausau, La Crosse, and Eau Claire. It was an extremely difficult adjustment to move to soutwestern Wisconsin wit only te clotes on teir backs and no understanding of te Englis language. Te Diocese of La Crosse as sougt to minister to te unique needs of te Hmong Community trougout te years. Tey ave been served by many priests, suc as Fr Robert MacKillop, Fr Steve Brice and Msgr Josep Hirsc. In 1987, Bisop Jon Paul wrote a letter On te Cristian Welcome of te Hmong Population among te Faitful of te Diocese of La Crosse. He acknowledged te need to reac out in evangelization to te Hmong population. He noted tat te process of evangelization requires some special recognition. He wrote, Altoug many of te Hmong were evangelized and received te Sacraments of Initiation before arriving in te Diocese, teir fait is still young and, terefore, needs regular and sound nourisment....we tend to forget tat te Hmong population in our country as ad te benefit of a steady program of evangelization for only te past tirty years. Likewise, tey do not come from a country wit a Cristian tradition. Tese words from Bisop Paul s pastoral letter are propetic and still old true as te Catolic Curc reaces out in evangelization to te Hmong population. Wile steady progress as occurred over te past 30 years since Bisop Paul wrote is pastoral letter, te progress is slowed witout an intentional, consistent opportunity werein te Hmong population can learn te Fait. Recent questions witin te Hmong community provided te occasion for some of its leaders to meet wit Bisop Callaan and discuss teir needs. Troug tese conversations, te Bisop eard te great desire of te Hmong Community to learn te Fait and to ave te spiritual leadersip to provide for teir needs. At is initiative, Bisop Callaan invited te Hmong Community to become a paris. Tis paris, once establised, would become central to serving te needs of evangelization and growt in te Catolic Fait. Te Hmong community of Wausau received tis invitation wit great joy. Over several monts, te community entered into dialogue regarding teir ability and willingness to undertake te work of becoming a paris. Te lively conversation delved into te many factors wic needed attention in order to answer weter tis was possible. Arriving at a decision, te Hmong Community petitioned te Bisop to request tat tey become a new paris witin te Diocese of La Crosse. Te Hmong Community cose te name Mary Moter of Good Help Paris for several reasons. Near Green Bay, a srine exists to Our Lady of Good Help. Tis srine reflects two stories. Wile a devastating fire destroyed Pestigo, te residents fled to te curc and prayed for safety from te fire. Teir prayers were answered and te fire did not destroy te capel or its oter buildings. People in fligt were saved troug Our Lady s intercession. At tis same srine, Sr Adele received visions from Our Lady. In tese apparitions, Our Lady told er to Gater te cildren in tis wild country and teac tem wat tey sould know for salvation. Teac tem teir catecism, ow to sign temselves wit te Sign of te Cross, and ow to approac te Sacraments; tat is wat I wis you to do. Go and fear noting. I will elp you. Tese two stories are similar to te experience of te Hmong people. Tey ad to flee a country due to te persecution wic tey endured. Now, tey are seeking to learn te basics of te Catolic Fait. And tey are asking Mary to elp tem in teir journey. Coosing tis name for te paris reflects te desire of Hmong Catolics to seek Mary s protection and guidance as tey gater and seek to be taugt te catecism, te Sign of te Cross, and ow to approac te Sacraments. Tey believe tat te Blessed Moter is inviting tem to fear noting and to trust se will elp tem. 2 Te people of te Diocese of La Crosse are invited to join in a special Mass wit Bisop Callaan on October 14 at 3:00 pm at Holy Name of Jesus Paris in Wausau, WI. Tis Mass will celebrate te establisment of te new paris and provide an opportunity for many of te faitful of te Diocese to pray wit tem. In preparation for tis day, Mary Moter of Good Help Paris is seeking a building to lease in wic te Sacraments will be celebrated. Tey are working to provide for te many items necessary to make possible te celebration of te Sacraments, taking on te costs connected wit tis process. As tis paris gets underway, people witin te Diocese ave expressed a desire to elp te Hmong Catolic community, asking wat tey can do to elp. Mindful of tis, Mary Moter of Good Help Paris offers a wis list to te curces of te Diocese. If any of tese items are available in your paris and no longer used - but are in good condition - donations are welcome! If an individual, group or organization would like to make a monetary donation to assist in te development of te paris, please send tese offerings to: Ann Lankford, Director of Office for Catecesis and Evangelization; P.O. Box 4004; La Crosse, WI 54602-4004 Above all, please pray for tis new paris. Setting fear aside, pray tat Our Lady of Good Help will intercede and provide for tis new paris. May tis new Catolic paris flouris under er patronage! Wis List: Incensor and Boat, Stand for te Incensor, Pascal Candle Stand, Vigil ligt Stand, 1 Set of Vestments, Albs/ Cinctures for Servers, Altar, Altar Clots, Stations of te Cross, 1 Ciborium, Statue of te Blessed Moter, Holy Pictures, or monetary gifts to assist wit te purcase of tese and oter items would be greatly appreciated.
