A Holy & Healthy Fear of God!
1 Peter 1:17 (Pew Bible Pg 1014)
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy.
And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile.
A Holy & Healthy Fear of God!
Deuteronomy 6:13 You shall fear only the Lord your God and you shall worship Him and swear by His name.
Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, and love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good.
Acts 9:31 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up, and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase.
2 Corinthians 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Philippians 2:12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling.
1. Fear God because it is the mark of genuine conversion!
2. Fear God because it says we understand His character!
God is Holy!
Isaiah 6:3-5 Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory! And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called and the house was filled with smoke. And I said, Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!
God is Holy! God is all-seeing!
Psalm 139:7-12 Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend to heaven, Thou art there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Thy hand will lead me
God is Holy! God is all-seeing! God is all-knowing!
Psalm 139:2-4 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
God is Holy! God is all-seeing! God is all-knowing! God is all-powerful!
Psalm 115:3 Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.
3. Fear God because we understand that He is the ultimate Judge!
He will judge our works!
2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body whether good or evil.
He will judge our works! He will judge our words!
Matthew 12:36 And I say to you, that every careless word that men shall speak, they shall render account for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.
He will judge our works! He will judge our words! He will judge our motives!
1 Corinthians 4:5 Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men s hearts; and then each man s praise will come to him from God.
4. Fear God because we understand that He will discipline His children!
Hebrews 12:5-6 And you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by Him; For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, and He scourges every son whom He receives."
5. Fear God because it promises us blessing!
Psalm 34:7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! O fear the Lord, you His saints; For to those who fear Him, there is no want. The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; But they who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing. Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
