2 BRITISH COLUMBIA MUSEUMS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE The annual conference and get together of the British Columbia museum community took place in Kelowna October 21st-23rd and was attended by curator Shea and president Erica Williams. Shea had the opportunity to meet with other local curators and museum professionals, sharing experiences and ideas. The museum community in British Columbia is small but an experienced and welcoming group. The meeting also provides a unique opportunity for other small museum curators and professionals to share what is working and what is not in spaces similar to Maple Ridge Museum and Haney House. Shea has returned full of ideas and possibilities for the future of the museum! HERITAGE WEEK 2019 The theme for Heritage Week next February is Heritage The Tie That Binds. It makes us think of those elements of our community that give us moments of shared history and nostalgia. It is the feeling that fuels high school reunions or makes us tear up when we see a picture of our beloved Christmas ornaments. What does that for you? What gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling about coming from Maple Ridge or from living here? Send a Tweet with #mrmuseum with your ideas or email us at mrmuseum@gmail.com. OUT OF THE BOX REMEMBRANCE DAY PEACE CELEBRATION PROGRAMME On November 11th of this year, the world will remember and commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the ending of the First World War, the war to end all wars. The whole world was hit by the tragedy of this war and people were lost, from the largest cities to the smallest villages. In Maple Ridge 228 men enlisted to fight the war and two women joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps and English Red Cross. Thirty-four of these men did not return. One year after the end of the Great War, the city gathered together to remember the peace that came after, and to remember those who did not come home. This remembrance began a tradition of never forgetting the tragedy of war, sacrifices that were made, and lives that were lost. The image to the right was used in the programme of the peace celebration that took place at the agricultural Hall and grounds in Port Haney in 1919 that is our "Out of the Box" item for this issue. The program reminds us how, just one year after the war, people knew that this was an war that should never be forgot. This November we remember the sacrifices of those who served, the lives that were changed forever, and the lives that were lost. The image also appeared in The Gold Stripe, a book published in three volumes just after the First World War, as a tribute to the British Columbia men who have been killed, crippled and wounded in the Great War and to raise money for the Amputation Club of British Columbia. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL It s that time of year again! Please renew your membership and encourage your friends to join us. The bigger a voice we have in the community the more effective we can be in protecting and preserving our history. Image from the title page of The Gold Stripe.

4 THE REST OF THE TIMES STORY A few years ago, we received a donation from Black Press Community Media of all of the photographic negatives from the TIMES newspaper. Through a Library and Archives Canada grant we were able to organize the collection enough to make it accessible and to scan a few thousand images. But what was lacking for so many images was the context. Why was the photo taken and who are the people in it? Well, now we have the answer but it is a very large and unwieldy one. We have now received the only surviving copy of the entire print run of the TIMES. In archival terms, newspapers are considered to be ephemera but when you are dealing with the only copy in existence and it has never been filmed or copied in any way, it is a different story. It is also a lot of newspapers. We will be seeking grant funds to send this collection off to have digital copies made so that we can make them accessible. This will open up stories from the 80 s, 90 s and early 2000 s that we don t have very well-represented in our collections. The TIMES mascot, known as Hacksaw, in the 1992 Santa Claus Parade.
