U.S. Involvement in Iran

Iran takes Oil Fields 1951 Iran s Prime Minister Mossadegh took the oil fields owned by Britain and nabonalized them for Iran Britain stops buying oil from Iran. US fears that Iran might turn to the Soviets for aid.

US/C.I.A. in Iran Result: In 1953 the C.I.A. gave money to anb- Mossadegh supporters to kick him out of government.

US supports the Shah US then puts in power the Shah, king of Iran. The Shah was pro- American and he gave the oil fields back to Britain.

Shah s Secret Police The Shah ruled with a brutal and oppressive secret police. Iran s people hated the Shah s tacbcs. And many hated the US for supporbng the Shah.

Jan. 1979 Iranian RevoluBon A muslim religious leader, Khomeini, led rebels to overthrow the Shah and created a strict religious state based on the Koran, sacred book of Islam.

Nov. 1979 - The Iran Hostage Crisis Iranian students take over US Embassy in Tehran, Iran and hold 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. What did they want? How did it end? ConBnue with #50

RevoluBon broke out and the Ayatollah Khomeini led rebels in overthrowing the Shah and establishing a religious state based on the Koran. 2. Why did it happen and what did the students want? Carter allowed the Shah to come to the US for cancer treatment, bu^he students wanted the Shah returned to Iran for trial in exchange for the American hostages. 3. How did it end? Carter refused to negobate, and a?er 444 days the hostages were returned when Reagan became President.
