Resurrection Life February 2010 Rector's Corner Living Lent Each time we enter a new liturgical season, things are shaken up a bit in our lives. Or they should be! We are challenged to do things differently, to pay closer attention to what we do, and to what God has to say to us. Lent is a great time to do things with more intentionality than we usually bring to our daily tasks. I invite any and all seekers to join me in a Lenten journey which will involve a little discipline (but not too much), some reflection and writing, and prayer. For 40 days, I plan to read Morning Prayer as found in the Book of Common Prayer, briefly record my observations of the scripture readings and then intentionally carry that scripture through the day with me in prayer. The letters S-O- A-P will help us remember the format to follow. S(cripture) ---- choose a scripture from the Morning Prayer lectionary. For instance, Ash Wednesday s lessons are found on p 951 in the Book of Common Prayer: Amos 5:6-15 or Hebrews 12: 1-14 or Luke 18:9-14. O(bservation) ---- observe what speak to you. Write down your observation. A(pplication) ---- Think: how might this apply to your life, the day ahead, your relationships with God and others. P(rayer) ---- What prayer or prayerful thought might you carry with you from this reading? If you would like to do this together, we can share our observations on-line. Or even at a weekly gathering over coffee or tea. If you would like to join me in this Lenten endeavor, let me know at LynZBriggs@gmail. com or speak to me at church. I d love to have some companions on my 2010 Lenten journey. --- Lyn+ Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is February 17. Resurrection Life Karen Valentine's Baby Shower Photos by Neil Jones
Baby Shower The baby shower held for Jim & Karen Valentine on January 9 was attended by 30 people. We had brunch prepared by Lynnae Ray, Daleann Petersen, Sue Howard, Joyce Mitchell, Joan Nienke and Linda Besselievre who also helped set-up and clean-up. THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Karen and Jim received wonderful gifts for their soon to arrive son, who will be named Alexander. His arrival date is mid to late February and we are excited about the new addition to the Resurrection parish family. This baby and all of our Parish children have lots of Resurrection substitute grandparents and we rejoice in these beautiful children of God. --- Linda Besselievre Learning About Lent Why does Lent move around the calendar from year to year? Since Easter is moveable, Ash Wednesday moves around too. Easter is always the Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox on March 21. That s why Easter is never earlier than March 22 or later than April 25. The beginning of Lent is Ash Wednesday. But, aren t there more than 40 days during Lent? Yes, but since Sundays are celebrated as days of the resurrection, or Little Easters, they re not counted in the 40 days of Lent. So when is Ash Wednesday 2011? Actually you can figure our when Ash Wednesday and Easter occurs for the next 83 years by reading the table on page 882 of the Book of Common Prayer. Once you find out when Easter is, turn the page to find out Ash Wednesday. In 2011, since Easter will fall on April 24, Ash Wednesday will be March 9. Pentecost 2011 will be on June 12. (When was Easter the year you were born?) What happens differently in our worship during Lent? Our worship together will differ slightly. Instead of plants or flowers at the altar, we might have bare branches. The Alleluias in hymns and which mark the Breaking of the Bread will be gone. We begin Lent with the imposition of Ashes on Ash Wednesday and with the Great Litany chanted on the First Sunday in Lent. You ll notice our hymns and anthems will be more solemn. In fact, the choir and clergy will process in silence. This intentionally simple and penitential nature of the season creates space in our lives to reflect on the life and death of Jesus Christ. It instills in us a longing and readiness for the joys of the Resurrection and Easter living. Do I have to do things differently during Lent outside church? Of course not! However, the gift of the liturgical calendar is that our observance of Jesus life and death and resurrection makes us more mindful of the great gift of God s grace. Any practices of prayer, giving and fasting help us to focus on what God has done for us, and less on our own needs. That s why we are encouraged to contribute to the Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) fund especially during Lent. We might pick up some spiritual reading or set aside more time for prayer. These practices serve us in observing a Holy Lent. Prayers to Share Over the years I have made a collection of my favorite prayers which I keep in my Prayer Book: some are famous, written by people well known to the Church. Some are anonymously offered. I ve made up some copies of my little collection for you to use in your prayer time this Lent if you d like. They can be found in the Library. If you would like to share your favorite prayer, email me and I will add it to my collection (and to my prayer time). Below is one of my favorites, by Thomas a Kempis (1380-1471). Write your blessed Name, O Lord, upon my heart. There to remain so indelibly engraved, that no prosperity, no adversity shall ever move me from your love. Be to me a strong tower of defense, a comforter in tribulation, a deliverer in distress, a very present help in trouble, and a guide to heaven through the many temptations and dangers of this life. O Jesu, my only Saviour! Write your blessed name, O Lord, upon my heart, there to remain so indelibly engraved that no prosperity, no adversity shall ever, ever move me from your love. Lent Information Wednesday nights in March On the Wednesday evenings in March, join us for a soup supper, a simple program and worship at 6 pm. Watch the Sunday bulletin for more details. Saying Good Bye to Alleluia The whole congregation will say goodbye to alleluia as we enter Lent. The kids are invited to help make a special alleluia banner to be displayed on the Last Sunday after the Epiphany and then folded up and hidden in the church until Easter morning. We ll let you know when we gather to make that banner, kids! Lent On Line Use the 40 days of Lent as a time for deepening your understanding of discipleship. You can sign up to receive daily on-line Lenten reflections much like those Lyn sent out during Advent. They will challenge your thinking and guide you deeper into prayer during this yearly time of preparation. Send an email request to Mother Lyn at LynZBriggs@gmail.com. Reaffirming Faith Confirmation used to be seen as the time when you became a full member of the Episcopal Church, which meant that you were allowed to take Communion. However, our current Prayer Book reflects the more ancient understanding that we become full members of the Church the Body of Christ at our baptism, and by virtue of that baptism, we are eligible to take Communion. Today, Confirmation is seen as a rite for those who want to make a mature affirmation of the baptismal vows that were made for them by their parents and godparents. It is also an opportunity for those who were baptized in other traditions to identify themselves as formal members of the Episcopal Church, and for those who have been confirmed by a Bishop in another tradition to be received into the fellowship of the Episcopal Church. Reaffirmations of faith may also take place at confirmation services. Reaffirmation is for those who are already confirmed but who wish to renew their baptismal vows in a public service before the Bishop. It is often undertaken at a time when an individual is experiencing a deepening of spiritual life and perhaps a new direction of service. The preparation for Confirmation, Reception or Reaffirmation is an excellent opportunity for Christian formation, self-examination and fellowship with other seekers. The Confirmation rite itself involves prayer, anointing and laying on of hands by a Bishop. Or you may wish to be received from the Roman Catholic or ELCA Lutheran Church to become a member of the Episcopal Church. If you would like to explore and strengthen your faith or prepare yourself to be received, reaffirmed or confirmed when the Bishop is here on May 23, please speak to Mother Lyn.
